Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Changed Fiona's Name

The front door opened slowly as I whispered: "Clara?" When Adrian Vale checked the security records, he discovered the woman outside had accessed Fiona's original birth file six years earlier. But one signature was attached: "Clara Sterling." Adrian realized Ethan had not been working alone.
I stared at the woman standing outside the house.
Clara.
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction on Daniel's face told me everything.
He knew her.
Adrian knew her.
And somehow...
She was connected to Fiona.
The door remained closed.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Until Daniel finally whispered:
"She was supposed to be gone."
I turned toward him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked away.
"Clara disappeared after Ethan."
My heart tightened.
"After Ethan what?"
He didn't answer.
That was becoming the one thing I hated most.
Silence.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had pieces.
And I was always the last person to know.
Adrian stepped toward the security monitor.
"Open the camera."
The screen showed Clara standing outside.
She looked nothing like the dangerous person I imagined.
She wasn't holding anything.
She wasn't trying to break in.
She was just standing there.
Crying.
That confused me.
"Who is she?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"Clara Sterling was Ethan's sister."
My body went still.
"Sister?"
Daniel nodded.
"She was the person who helped Ethan build everything."
I looked at the screen again.
The woman outside.
The person who changed my daughter's records.
The person who erased Daniel's name.
Ethan's sister.
"Why is she here?"
Adrian looked at the message history.
"Because she wants something."
"What?"
He didn't answer.
I walked toward the door.
Adrian immediately stopped me.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Move."
"Blaire."
"No."
My voice became stronger.
"I spent six years letting people decide what I should know."
I looked at Daniel.
"Six years."
Then Adrian.
"I am done."
Nobody spoke.
I opened the door.
Clara looked up.
The moment she saw me, she started crying harder.
"Blaire."
I froze.
She knew my name.
Of course she did.
Everyone knew my name.
That was the problem.
"You know who I am."
She nodded.
"I do."
"Why?"
Her lips trembled.
"Because I was there."
The words made my stomach drop.
"Where?"
Her eyes moved toward Fiona.
"At the hospital."
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Clara."
She looked at him.
And her face broke.
"Daniel."
They stared at each other.
Two people connected by a past I never knew existed.
Adrian's voice became cold.
"You changed the records."
Clara closed her eyes.
"I know."
My heart sank.
She admitted it.
Just like that.
No denial.
No excuse.
"You changed my daughter's identity."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
The word hurt.
I stepped back.
"Why?"
Clara looked at Fiona.
"Because I was trying to save her."
I almost laughed.
Another person.
Another excuse.
Everyone was saving Fiona.
Everyone was protecting Fiona.
Nobody was protecting me.
"From what?"
Clara looked at me.
"From Ethan."
I shook my head.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
Her answer surprised me.
"I expect you to hate me."
Silence.
Because she wasn't fighting.
She wasn't defending herself.
She looked broken.
Like someone who had been carrying guilt for years.
"Then tell me the truth."
Clara nodded.
"I will."
She walked inside.
Adrian watched every movement.
Daniel stayed close.
Fiona remained beside me.
Clara sat down.
Then she looked at my daughter.
"When Fiona was born, Ethan found out Daniel was her father."
I already knew that.
But hearing it again hurt.
"He was furious."
"Why?"
Clara looked at Adrian.
"Because Daniel had something Ethan needed."
"What?"
"A witness."
The room became quiet.
"To what?"
Clara looked at me.
"The accident."
My forehead tightened.
"What accident?"
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke.
"The night I disappeared."
I looked at him.
"You were in an accident?"
He nodded.
"Ethan arranged it."
My breath caught.
Clara looked down.
"I helped him."
The confession was quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
"You?"
Her tears fell.
"Yes."
Daniel stared at her.
"Why?"
She closed her eyes.
"Because I thought I was protecting my family."
I shook my head.
"By destroying someone else's?"
She didn't defend herself.
"I was wrong."
The honesty didn't make it easier.
"What happened that night?"
Clara took a deep breath.
"Ethan wanted Daniel gone because Daniel discovered the accounts."
"The stolen money?"
She nodded.
"But Daniel wasn't the only problem."
She looked at Fiona.
"The baby was."
My heart tightened.
"Why?"
"Because Daniel had already created a legal protection for Fiona."
Adrian immediately understood.
"A trust."
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
I looked between them.
"What trust?"
Daniel answered.
"One that would prevent Ethan from controlling her."
I felt sick.
"So Ethan changed her identity to get access?"
"Yes."
Clara looked ashamed.
"He couldn't touch the money while Fiona was legally connected to Daniel."
I looked at my daughter.
A baby.
Used as a shield.
Used as a weapon.
Used in a battle she never chose.
My hands shook.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Clara looked at me.
"Because Ethan threatened you."
"With what?"
Her voice lowered.
"With taking Fiona away."
My eyes filled with tears.
Because that fear had always been real.
I had felt it.
Every time Ethan smiled and told me I couldn't survive without him.
Every time he reminded me that he had more money.
More power.
More connections.
Clara reached into her bag.
"I brought something."
She pulled out a folder.
Adrian immediately took it.
"What is this?"
"The original birth documents."
My heart stopped.
"Original?"
She nodded.
"The ones Ethan destroyed."
Adrian opened the folder.
The room became silent.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Then he looked at me.
His expression changed.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
"Adrian."
He slowly handed me the document.
I looked down.
At the top was Fiona's original birth record.
Her name.
Her date.
Her parents.
Everything.
But there was one more section.
A section I had never seen before.
Medical notes.
And one sentence written by the doctor.
"Additional genetic concern discovered during examination."
My hands started shaking.
"What does this mean?"
Nobody answered.
Then Clara whispered:
"Ethan wasn't trying to hide Fiona's father."
I looked at her.
"Then what was he hiding?"
She stared at the document.
"The reason Fiona was born."
The room went cold.
Daniel stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?"
Clara looked terrified.
"Because Fiona's birth wasn't an accident."
I couldn't breathe.
"What?"
She looked at me.
"Ethan planned everything."
Adrian grabbed the document again.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then his face changed.
Because at the bottom of the page was a name.
Not Ethan.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
Someone who had signed Fiona's original medical file.
May you like
And the signature belonged to the one person none of us expected.
My mother.
