Chapter 8 - The House Where Everything Began

The old house door opened as I whispered: "Daniel?" When Blaire Sterling arrived at the abandoned birthplace of her daughter, she found a hidden room behind the wall with a forgotten hospital bracelet. But one name was written on it: "Fiona Cross." Blaire realized Ethan had stolen more than the truth.
I stood outside the old house and couldn't move.
Six years.
Six years since I had last seen this place.
The house looked smaller than I remembered.
Or maybe I had changed.
The white paint was peeling.
The front garden was overgrown.
The windows were dark.
But I still remembered everything.
The night Fiona was born.
The night my entire life changed.
The night I thought I became a family.
I never imagined I would come back here searching for answers.
I never imagined the answers would hurt this much.
Adrian stood beside me.
"You don't have to go inside."
I looked at him.
"Yes, I do."
He studied my face.
"Why?"
I looked at the house.
"Because my daughter deserves to know who she is."
For once, Adrian didn't argue.
The old wooden door was unlocked.
That scared me.
Someone had been here.
Recently.
I slowly stepped inside.
The smell hit me immediately.
Old memories.
Dust.
Wood.
And something else.
A hospital smell.
My stomach tightened.
"Daniel was here."
Adrian looked around.
"How do you know?"
"Because he knew this place."
I walked deeper into the house.
Every corner carried a memory.
The couch where I waited for Ethan to come home.
The kitchen where I made dinner while believing I had a normal marriage.
The bedroom where I held Fiona for the first time.
The bedroom where Ethan told me everything was going to be okay.
The bedroom where I believed him.
I stopped.
Because something was different.
The wall near the closet.
There was a small mark.
A scratch.
Almost invisible.
I touched it.
Adrian noticed.
"What is it?"
"I don't know."
He moved closer.
The wall panel looked slightly loose.
He carefully pushed it.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small box.
My heart started beating faster.
Adrian looked at me.
"Do you want to open it?"
I nodded.
Inside was a collection of documents.
Photos.
And an old hospital bracelet.
I picked it up.
My hands began shaking.
The bracelet was tiny.
A newborn baby's bracelet.
The name printed on it made me stop breathing.
Fiona Cross.
Not Fiona Sterling.
Cross.
Daniel's last name.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
Adrian took a step closer.
"Blaire."
"No."
I shook my head.
"This isn't possible."
But it was.
The evidence was in my hands.
Someone had changed my daughter's identity before I even knew there was something to change.
I looked through the papers.
The first document was a birth record.
The second was a custody agreement.
The third...
A letter.
From Daniel.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Blaire,
If you are reading this, then Ethan succeeded in making me disappear.
I closed my eyes.
The pain was immediate.
Not because I knew Daniel.
I didn't.
But because I knew what it felt like to have someone erase you from your own life.
The letter continued.
I never left Fiona.
I never abandoned her.
The night she was born, I found out Ethan had changed the documents before you signed them.
He wanted Fiona to carry his name.
Not because he loved her.
Because he needed control.
I looked at Adrian.
He was reading over my shoulder.
His expression became darker.
I continued.
Ethan knew if you discovered Fiona was mine, everything would collapse.
Because Fiona was not just my daughter.
She was proof.
Proof of what he did.
Proof of what he stole.
My hands froze.
"What proof?"
Adrian took the letter.
He read the next lines.
Then his face changed.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
"Adrian."
He handed the letter back.
The words felt impossible.
Daniel wrote:
Fiona's DNA was not the only thing Ethan changed.
He changed the records of the company.
The money.
The ownership.
Everything.
He used my daughter's identity to hide the transfer.
I looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"Ethan used Fiona as a legal cover."
"For what?"
He looked at the documents.
"Billions."
The room went silent.
I stared at the papers.
My daughter.
My baby.
The little girl who loved cartoons and stuffed animals.
Was used in a plan created by adults who only cared about power.
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone stopped.
Adrian immediately moved in front of me.
"Stay behind me."
I grabbed his arm.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
Then a floorboard creaked.
Someone was walking.
Slowly.
Coming down.
My heart raced.
Adrian reached for his phone.
His security team wasn't nearby.
We had come alone.
A mistake.
A terrible mistake.
The person appeared at the top of the stairs.
A man.
Older than Adrian.
Tired.
His face thinner than the photograph.
But alive.
Daniel Cross.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I couldn't breathe.
Because this man was supposed to be a ghost.
A memory.
A dead person.
But he was standing in front of me.
Alive.
His eyes moved to me.
Then to Fiona.
He froze.
Like he was seeing the only thing he had spent years fighting for.
"My daughter."
The words were barely audible.
I stepped back.
Fiona was behind me.
"No."
Daniel's expression broke.
"I know you're angry."
"You disappeared."
His eyes filled with pain.
"I didn't."
"You weren't there."
"I tried."
"Then why didn't you find us?"
His face changed.
Because the answer was painful.
"Because every time I got close..."
He stopped.
Adrian looked at him.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
And something changed between them.
Old friendship.
Old pain.
Old betrayal.
"You still don't know everything."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at me.
Then at Fiona.
"Ethan wasn't the person who made me disappear."
The room went silent.
My voice became small.
"Then who was?"
Daniel took a step forward.
"I came back because I found out who really ordered it."
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked.
It was mine.
Unknown number.
I answered without thinking.
A voice spoke.
A voice I knew.
A voice that made my blood run cold.
"Ethan."
Nobody moved.
My ex-husband's voice came through the phone.
Calm.
Confident.
Like he had been waiting.
"Blaire."
I couldn't speak.
Then he said:
"You finally found Daniel."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"How do you know where I am?"
A pause.
Then Ethan laughed softly.
"Because I wanted you to find him."
The room froze.
Daniel's face changed.
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
"What did you do?"
Ethan ignored him.
His voice lowered.
"Blaire, there is something you need to know about Fiona."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Another pause.
May you like
Then Ethan whispered:
"Daniel isn't the only person who lied about being her father..."
