Chapter 9 - The Truth Ethan Buried

The phone slipped from my hand as I whispered: "Tell me who Fiona's father is." When Daniel Cross stepped closer, Adrian Vale discovered the hidden DNA file inside Ethan's private archive. But one sentence changed everything: "Biological father confirmed: Daniel Cross." Adrian realized Ethan's final lie was about something even bigger.
I couldn't hear anything after that.
Not the sound of the old house.
Not the wind outside.
Not even Fiona calling my name.
All I could hear was Ethan's voice from the phone.
Daniel isn't the only person who lied about being her father.
For years, I had believed Ethan because he was my husband.
I had believed his explanations.
His promises.
His apologies.
I had believed every version of the truth he gave me.
And now I was standing in the same house where Fiona was born, surrounded by people who knew more about my daughter than I did.
I looked at Daniel.
The man who disappeared.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man who looked at Fiona like he had spent six years imagining this exact moment.
"Is it true?"
My voice barely came out.
Daniel didn't move.
"Blaire..."
"Is it true?"
His eyes filled with pain.
"Yes."
The answer hurt.
Even though I already knew.
I turned away.
I needed to breathe.
I needed one second where nobody was asking me to accept another impossible truth.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Blaire."
I looked at him.
"Don't."
He stopped.
Because he understood.
I wasn't angry at him.
Not only him.
I was angry at every person who had decided I couldn't handle the truth.
Daniel slowly approached.
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"How else was I supposed to find out?"
He had no answer.
"Through another hidden letter?"
Silence.
"Another secret file?"
Silence.
"Another person telling me what happened to my own life?"
Daniel lowered his head.
"I deserve that."
That surprised me.
Ethan always had an excuse.
Adrian always had a reason.
But Daniel...
Daniel looked like someone who knew he had lost the right to defend himself.
I looked at Fiona.
She was watching us.
Confused.
Scared.
I immediately softened.
I couldn't let my daughter see adults falling apart.
I walked toward her.
"Baby."
She reached for my hand.
"Is he my daddy?"
The question destroyed me.
Because I didn't know what to say.
A child deserved a simple answer.
Yes.
Or no.
But my life had become a place where nothing was simple anymore.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Adrian.
Finally, I knelt beside Fiona.
"I think he is someone who loves you very much."
Fiona looked at Daniel.
"Do you?"
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"More than anything."
She studied him.
Children were different.
They didn't care about money.
Power.
Mistakes.
They only felt whether someone was safe.
Slowly, Fiona walked toward him.
Daniel didn't move.
Like he was afraid even breathing would scare her away.
Then Fiona hugged him.
And Daniel broke.
He covered his face.
A man who had survived six years of hiding.
A man who had lost his daughter before he ever got the chance to know her.
He cried silently.
I looked away.
Because somehow, seeing his pain hurt.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I understood it.
Adrian quietly walked beside me.
"He loves her."
I looked at him.
"You knew."
His expression changed.
"What?"
"You knew Daniel loved her."
"Yes."
"And you still let me believe he was gone."
Adrian looked down.
"I thought I was protecting you."
I shook my head.
"You were protecting yourself."
That hit him.
Because it was true.
For the first time, Adrian had no answer.
The truth was painful.
But it was simple.
Everyone had been afraid.
Everyone had chosen silence.
And I was the only one who paid the price.
Daniel eventually stood.
"I need to tell you everything."
I crossed my arms.
"Start with why Ethan wanted Fiona's identity changed."
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
"Ethan discovered something about Fiona before she was born."
"What?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"The reason Ethan wanted custody wasn't because she was his daughter."
I frowned.
"Then why?"
"Because Fiona was connected to something valuable."
I felt anger rising.
"My daughter is not an asset."
"I know."
Daniel's voice became firm.
"That's why I fought."
"For what?"
"For the evidence."
He walked toward the hidden box.
Inside were more documents.
Daniel pulled out a folder.
"Ethan built his empire using stolen information."
Adrian's face changed.
"I suspected."
Daniel nodded.
"You were right."
He looked at me.
"But Ethan didn't steal from companies."
He paused.
"He stole from people."
I looked at the papers.
"What does Fiona have to do with that?"
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
At the bottom was one name.
Ethan Sterling.
"Before Fiona was born, I discovered Ethan was using illegal accounts to move money."
Adrian looked closely.
"I remember."
Daniel looked at him.
"You remember because you almost exposed him."
Adrian became silent.
My eyes moved between them.
"You two were fighting him?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did I never know?"
"Because Ethan found out."
Daniel's voice became darker.
"He knew you were pregnant."
My stomach tightened.
"He threatened you?"
"No."
Daniel looked at Fiona.
"He threatened her."
The room became cold.
"What did he say?"
Daniel hesitated.
"He said if I didn't disappear, he would make sure Fiona was taken away before she was born."
I covered my mouth.
No.
No mother should ever hear that.
"He couldn't do that."
Daniel looked at me.
"You don't know what Ethan was capable of."
I remembered.
The lies.
The control.
The manipulation.
Maybe I did know.
I just didn't want to admit it.
Adrian suddenly looked at his phone.
His expression changed.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
"Adrian."
He turned the screen toward us.
A news alert had appeared.
Breaking news.
The headline made my blood freeze.
"Ethan Sterling Announces Public Search For Missing Wife And Daughter."
Below the headline was a picture.
My picture.
Fiona's picture.
And Ethan standing beside reporters.
Playing the victim.
"He is telling everyone you kidnapped Fiona."
I stared at the screen.
My hands shook.
"He did this before."
Adrian nodded.
"He controls the story."
Daniel looked furious.
"We need to move."
"Where?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Somewhere Ethan can't reach."
Before anyone could move, Adrian's security phone rang.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
"What happened?"
The person on the other end spoke quickly.
Adrian became completely still.
"Are you sure?"
A pause.
Then he looked at me.
"Blaire..."
Something in his voice made my heart stop.
"What?"
He lowered the phone.
"The DNA file we found..."
I waited.
"It wasn't the only copy."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did they find?"
Adrian looked toward the window.
"Someone accessed the original hospital records."
"Who?"
He turned back.
And his voice became a whisper.
"The person who changed Fiona's birth certificate wasn't Ethan."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Adrian looked at the security camera feed on his phone.
A new figure appeared outside the house.
A woman.
Standing alone.
Watching us.
Daniel's face went pale.
Because he recognized her.
May you like
And he whispered one name:
"Clara."
