Chapter 6 - The Father Who Returned From The Dead

A little girl held an old envelope and whispered: "Mommy, the man said he waited for me." When Adrian Vale checked the security footage, he discovered the visitor used a forgotten access code from six years ago. But one detail appeared on the screen: "Daniel Cross." Adrian knew the past had finally come back.
I couldn't move.
The name stayed in my mind.
Daniel Cross.
The man Adrian said was dead.
The man who might be Fiona's father.
The man my daughter had just claimed to see.
I looked at the envelope in Fiona's tiny hands.
It was old.
The edges were worn.
Like someone had carried it for years.
"Fiona."
I knelt in front of her.
"Who gave this to you?"
She looked toward the dark hallway.
"The man."
My heart raced.
"What did he look like?"
She thought for a moment.
"He had sad eyes."
That sentence shouldn't have frightened me.
But it did.
Because somehow, I knew.
Sad eyes.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Just sad.
Like someone who had lost something.
"Did he say his name?"
Fiona nodded.
"He said he was sorry."
Adrian suddenly stepped forward.
"Fiona."
His voice was different.
Not the calm billionaire.
Not the man who always knew what to do.
A frightened man.
"Did he say anything else?"
Fiona looked at him.
"He said he loved me."
The room went silent.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For a second, he looked broken.
I had seen powerful men before.
Men who controlled companies.
Men who controlled people.
But I had never seen a man lose control of his own emotions.
Not until now.
"Adrian."
He didn't answer.
"Tell me the truth."
His jaw tightened.
"I think Daniel is alive."
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.
I stood slowly.
"You think?"
Adrian looked at me.
"I need proof."
"Proof?"
My voice rose.
"My daughter just told us a man who is supposed to be dead gave her a letter, and you're asking for proof?"
"I need to know we're not being manipulated."
I froze.
Because he was right.
And I hated that.
Someone had been manipulating us for years.
Maybe everyone.
Adrian carefully took the envelope from Fiona.
"I need to open this."
"No."
My answer surprised him.
He looked at me.
I held out my hand.
"It's from him."
I looked at Fiona.
"If this is really her father, she deserves to know."
Adrian studied me.
Then slowly gave me the envelope.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
No long explanation.
No dramatic confession.
Just a few lines.
Blaire,
If you are reading this, then Ethan failed to keep me away forever.
I know you hate me.
I know you think I abandoned you.
But I never abandoned Fiona.
I was taken away from her.
My eyes blurred.
I continued reading.
The truth about Fiona was never supposed to be hidden from you.
Ethan changed the records because he knew what would happen if you discovered who I was.
He knew what I had found.
He knew what I could expose.
And he knew the only way to stop me was to erase me.
I stopped.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
"What did he find?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he knew.
I looked at him.
"What did Daniel find?"
Adrian looked away.
"Something connected to Ethan's family."
"Again."
My voice broke.
"Another secret."
I threw the paper onto the table.
"My entire life has been built on secrets."
Adrian didn't defend himself.
Maybe because he couldn't.
"I should have told you earlier."
"Yes."
The honesty surprised him.
I looked at him.
"You should have."
A painful silence followed.
Then Adrian said something unexpected.
"I was afraid."
I stared at him.
"Of what?"
He looked at Fiona.
"Of losing her."
My expression changed.
"You don't even know if she's your family."
"No."
He shook his head.
"But Daniel was my brother in everything except blood."
That sentence softened something inside me.
Not enough to forgive.
Not yet.
But enough to understand.
Adrian had lost someone too.
The difference was...
I had lost my husband.
He had lost his best friend.
And Fiona had lost a father she never knew.
Suddenly, the security alarm stopped.
Everyone looked toward the entrance.
The guard rushed back.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian turned.
"What?"
"We found the person who entered the building."
My body went tense.
"Who?"
The guard looked at me.
"She is waiting outside."
"Who is she?"
The guard hesitated.
Then:
"Mrs. Sterling."
My blood ran cold.
"My mother?"
Adrian immediately moved.
"She came alone?"
The guard nodded.
"Yes."
"Let her in."
I looked at him.
"Are you serious?"
"Your mother has answers."
"And what if she has more lies?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Then we finally hear them from her face."
A minute later, the elevator doors opened.
And there she was.
My mother.
Evelyn Carter.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who taught me to trust my instincts.
The woman who disappeared from my life after Fiona was born.
She looked older.
Tired.
Broken.
But when she saw me...
She cried.
"Blaire."
I couldn't move.
Six years.
Six years without a single explanation.
And now she stood in front of me.
Like nothing had happened.
"Why?"
That was the only word I could say.
Her face collapsed.
"I tried to protect you."
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
"Everyone says that."
She looked at Fiona.
And her expression changed.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"Oh my God."
She stepped closer.
"No."
Adrian immediately moved between them.
"Stay back."
My mother looked at him.
"You're Adrian Vale."
He stared at her.
"You know me?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know what Ethan did to Daniel."
The room froze.
I looked at her.
"You knew?"
She looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't say sorry."
My voice shook.
"Tell me."
She lowered her head.
"The night Fiona was born..."
I waited.
"The night you thought Ethan was in the hospital..."
My heart stopped.
"He wasn't alone."
I felt sick.
"What does that mean?"
My mother looked at Adrian.
Then at Fiona.
Then whispered:
"Daniel was there."
Nobody spoke.
The truth felt impossible.
"Daniel was at the hospital when Fiona was born."
I stepped back.
"No."
"He held her first."
My eyes filled with tears.
"No."
"Ethan found out."
My mother grabbed the edge of the table.
"And that night, Daniel disappeared."
Adrian's face turned pale.
Because he remembered.
"Where was he taken?"
My mother looked terrified.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I only know one thing."
"What?"
Her eyes moved to the window.
"Daniel didn't disappear because Ethan wanted him gone."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Then why?"
My mother reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old phone.
A phone I had never seen before.
"I received one message six years ago."
She turned it on.
The screen lit up.
One unread message remained.
Sent from a number that was supposed to be disconnected forever.
She handed the phone to Adrian.
His face changed when he read it.
Because the sender's name appeared at the top.
Not Daniel.
Not Ethan.
Someone else.
Someone we thought had died even earlier.
And then the phone received a new message.
Right in front of us.
May you like
The screen showed only four words:
"I know where Fiona is."
