Chapter 7 - The Name Hidden In The Family Portrait

The name was carved beneath the frame.

Leandro stared at it.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

For several seconds, the entire room disappeared.

The voices.

The tension.

The secrets.

Everything faded.

Only that name remained.

The name of the person who had been hiding behind every lie.

The name of the person who had destroyed his family.

Camila stood beside him, barely breathing.

"You see why I couldn't tell you."

Leandro slowly turned around.

"Why?"

His voice was quiet.

Not angry.

Not yet.

"Because if I told you too early, you would have gone after the truth without knowing who was watching."

Camila looked at the portrait.

"And they would have known."

Leandro looked back at the carved name.

A name that belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had been close to him his entire life.

His hands tightened.

"I need to hear it from you."

Camila looked at him.

"The person behind everything..."

She stopped.

Like saying the words would make them real.

Then she whispered:

"Was your uncle, Marcus."

The room went silent.

Adrian immediately looked toward the empty chair near the window.

The chair where Marcus used to sit during family meetings.

"He was involved?"

Leandro looked at his brother.

Adrian nodded slowly.

"I suspected."

"You suspected?"

Leandro's voice changed.

"How long?"

Adrian looked down.

"Years."

That answer hurt more than expected.

Because it meant everyone knew pieces of the truth.

Everyone except him.

Leandro turned toward Alejandro.

"My own family betrayed me."

His father looked at him.

"I tried to stop it."

"But you disappeared."

Alejandro accepted the accusation.

"I know."

Leandro stepped back.

"You let me grow up believing you abandoned me."

"I did what I had to do."

"Was it worth it?"

His father's eyes filled with regret.

"No."

That honesty surprised him.

Alejandro had always been the strongest person Leandro knew.

A man who never admitted weakness.

But now he looked broken.

"I thought staying away would keep you safe."

Leandro looked at Camila.

"And what about her?"

Alejandro looked at her.

"She was brave enough to continue what I started."

Camila shook her head.

"I was just trying to survive."

"No."

Alejandro replied.

"You were protecting my son."

Leandro looked at his wife.

For eight months, she had carried pain alone.

And she never once used it against him.

She never blamed him.

She never asked him to choose sides.

She only waited.

That realization hurt.

Because he understood something.

The person who had been treated like a servant in his home...

was the person who had been protecting his entire family.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone looked.

It came from the desk.

An old phone.

One nobody had noticed before.

Leandro walked toward it.

The screen was already lit.

One message.

From Marcus.

"You're looking in the wrong place."

Leandro stared.

A second message appeared.

"Your father didn't disappear because of me."

Another message.

"He disappeared because he discovered what Camila's family did."

Everyone froze.

Camila's face changed.

"No."

Leandro looked at her.

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"I don't understand."

The phone received one final message.

"Ask her about the night her father died."

Leandro slowly turned.

Toward Camila.

The room became silent.

Not because he suspected her.

Because he saw something.

Pain.

A pain she had carried for years.

"Camila."

She closed her eyes.

"I knew this would come."

"Come where?"

She looked at him.

"To this moment."

Leandro waited.

She sat down slowly.

"My father didn't die the way everyone told me."

Nobody moved.

"What happened?"

Camila looked at the floor.

"He was investigating your family's accounts."

Leandro nodded.

"We know that."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don't know everything."

She looked at Alejandro.

"Your father knew."

Alejandro lowered his eyes.

Camila continued.

"My father discovered someone was moving money through a company connected to him."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

Then answered:

"Someone from my family."

Leandro froze.

"Your family?"

Camila nodded.

"My father had a brother."

Nobody spoke.

"He was the person who introduced my father to Alejandro."

Richard suddenly looked shocked.

"Impossible."

Camila turned toward him.

"You knew."

Richard's expression changed.

"I didn't know he was involved."

"Of course you didn't."

Her voice became colder.

"Because everyone thought he disappeared."

Leandro looked between them.

"Who?"

Camila's eyes moved toward the old portrait.

"The same person who helped destroy both our families."

She reached into her pocket.

And pulled out the old metal key.

The key she had shown him in the garden.

Leandro looked at it.

"What does that open?"

Camila stood.

"The place where my father hid the original evidence."

Alejandro looked surprised.

"You still have it?"

She nodded.

"I never trusted anyone enough to give it away."

Leandro watched her walk toward the wall.

Behind the portrait.

She touched a hidden section of wood.

A small panel opened.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

Empty.

Her expression changed.

"No."

Leandro immediately noticed.

"What?"

Camila searched inside.

"The key."

"What about it?"

She looked at him.

"The evidence was supposed to be here."

"Was?"

She nodded.

"Someone already took it."

A cold feeling moved through the room.

Someone had known.

Someone had been one step ahead.

Again.

Leandro looked at the others.

"Who knew about this place?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian slowly raised his hand.

"Only four people."

Leandro looked at him.

"Who?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Your father."

"Alejandro."

"My mother."

"Victoria."

"Camila."

"And..."

He stopped.

Leandro stared.

"And who?"

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

"The person who built this house."

Everyone became silent.

Because there was only one other person.

The architect.

The man who had access to every hidden room.

Every secret passage.

Every place where someone could hide something.

Leandro's phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice finally came through.

An older man's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Leandro."

His face changed.

Because he recognized it.

A voice he had not heard in years.

A voice that belonged to someone who should never have been able to call him.

"Your father told you half the truth."

Leandro gripped the phone.

"Who are you?"

The voice laughed softly.

"You already know."

The call ended.

Immediately.

A message appeared.

An image.

Leandro opened it.

And his blood ran cold.

It was a photograph taken inside the mansion.

Taken minutes ago.

Showing everyone standing in the library.

But the person who took the photo was not outside.

The camera angle was from inside the room.

From behind them.

Leandro slowly looked toward the dark hallway.

Because someone had been standing there the entire time.

Watching.

Waiting.

And then the old security monitor in the corner suddenly turned on by itself.

A live camera feed appeared.

Showing the mansion entrance.

A person was walking through the front door.

A person everyone believed had vanished twenty years ago.

And on the screen, beneath the image, appeared one name:

"Camila's father."
