Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Apron

The footsteps behind Leandro stopped.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
He stood in the laundry room holding the old apron in his hands.
Victoria was standing at the doorway.
Her perfect expression had disappeared.
For the first time, Leandro saw something he had never seen before.
Fear.
"Where did you find that?" she asked.
Her voice was quieter than usual.
Leandro slowly turned around.
The question itself told him everything.
Not "What is that?"
Not "Why are you looking through things?"
She already knew.
"I should be asking you that," Leandro replied.
Victoria forced a small laugh.
"You came home after eight months and the first thing you do is search through laundry rooms?"
Leandro looked down at the apron.
The fabric was old.
The edges were damaged.
It was something nobody in his family would ever touch.
But Camila had worn it.
His wife.
The woman who used to sit beside him at million-dollar dinners.
The woman who had never asked for expensive gifts.
The woman who had once told him:
"Leandro, I don't care if we live in a mansion or a small apartment. I just want us to be together."
Now she was cleaning that mansion.
Alone.
Victoria stepped closer.
"You don't understand what happened."
Leandro looked at her.
"Then explain it."
Silence.
A long, uncomfortable silence.
Victoria looked away.
"Camila changed after you left."
Leandro's eyes narrowed.
"Changed?"
"She became distant. She refused help. She insisted on doing things herself."
Leandro almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
"You're telling me my wife chose to carry garbage outside every day?"
Victoria didn't answer.
That was enough.
Leandro placed the apron on the table.
"Where is Camila?"
Victoria's face tightened.
"Sleeping."
"At this hour?"
"It's been a long day."
Leandro walked past her.
"Take me to her."
Victoria grabbed his arm.
"Leandro."
He stopped.
Her hand immediately moved away.
She realized she had crossed a line.
"You don't know everything."
He turned slowly.
"Then tell me."
Victoria looked at him.
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to speak.
But then she closed her mouth.
That hesitation made Leandro more suspicious.
Because his mother was many things.
Cold.
Controlling.
Proud.
But she was never speechless.
Someone had scared her.
And Leandro needed to know who.
He found Camila in their bedroom.
Or what used to be their bedroom.
The room was still beautiful.
The same large windows.
The same expensive furniture.
The same painting they bought during their first anniversary trip.
But something was missing.
Her things.
Her jewelry box was gone.
Her designer dresses were gone.
Her photographs were gone.
Only a few simple clothes remained.
Like someone had slowly erased her from her own life.
Camila was sitting on the edge of the bed.
She looked surprised when he entered.
"You shouldn't be here."
Leandro closed the door behind him.
"Why?"
She didn't answer.
"Camila."
She looked down.
"I don't want you to fight with your family."
"My family?"
Her eyes became sad.
"Leandro..."
"No."
His voice became softer.
"Look at me."
She slowly raised her eyes.
"When did this start?"
She stayed quiet.
"When?"
"After you left."
His heart sank.
"Eight months ago?"
She nodded.
Leandro walked closer.
"What happened?"
Camila looked toward the window.
"I made mistakes."
"What mistakes?"
"I wasn't strong enough."
The words hurt him more than anger would have.
Because Camila was blaming herself.
"Who told you that?"
She didn't answer.
He sat beside her.
"Camila, I know you. You would forgive someone who hurt you before you admitted they hurt you."
A tear appeared in her eyes.
But she wiped it away quickly.
"I didn't want to ruin your relationship with your family."
"You thought hiding this would protect me?"
"I thought it would protect you from choosing."
Leandro froze.
"Choosing what?"
Camila looked at him.
"Me or them."
The room became silent.
For years, Leandro had believed his family respected Camila.
They attended events together.
They smiled for cameras.
They called her the perfect wife.
But now he wondered how much of that was real.
"Tell me everything."
Camila shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you, you will never forgive them."
Leandro stared at her.
"And maybe they don't deserve forgiveness."
She looked frightened.
Not because of his anger.
Because she knew something he didn't.
"Leandro, please."
"Please what?"
"Don't investigate."
That sentence made him pause.
Not "Don't fight."
Not "Don't argue."
Don't investigate.
He studied her face.
"What are you afraid I will find?"
Camila's lips trembled.
For a moment, he thought she would finally tell him.
Then there was a knock on the door.
Both of them turned.
A voice came from outside.
"Leandro?"
It was his younger brother, Adrian.
Leandro opened the door.
Adrian stood there with a nervous expression.
"I need to talk to you."
Leandro stepped into the hallway.
"What happened?"
Adrian glanced at Camila.
Then lowered his voice.
"Not here."
Leandro followed him downstairs.
The mansion looked exactly as it always had.
Perfect.
Expensive.
Beautiful.
But now he saw something different.
The smiles.
The silence.
The way people avoided looking at him.
Everyone knew.
Adrian stopped near the library.
"Before you hear anything from someone else..."
Leandro waited.
Adrian took a deep breath.
"Camila was not supposed to stay here."
Leandro's expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
"After you left, mother wanted her gone."
Leandro felt his anger rise.
"Why?"
"Because she believed Camila was embarrassing the family."
"Embarrassing?"
Adrian nodded slowly.
"Mother said Camila didn't belong in this world anymore."
Leandro clenched his fist.
"My wife built this family with me."
"I know."
"Then why didn't anyone tell me?"
Adrian looked away.
Because he had no answer.
Leandro stepped closer.
"What else?"
Adrian hesitated.
"There is something you should see."
He walked toward the old office at the end of the hallway.
The office that belonged to Leandro's father.
A room nobody entered anymore.
Adrian unlocked the door.
Inside was darkness.
Dust covered the furniture.
Leandro looked around.
"What am I supposed to see?"
Adrian walked toward a drawer.
He pulled out a folder.
Inside were documents.
Leandro picked up the first page.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
It was a legal agreement.
With Camila's name.
And his family's signature.
His face changed.
"What is this?"
Adrian looked at him.
"I found it yesterday."
Leandro turned the page.
The agreement stated that Camila had accepted a payment to leave the mansion.
But there was something strange.
The signature wasn't hers.
His breathing slowed.
"She never signed this."
Adrian nodded.
"I know."
Leandro looked up.
"Then who did?"
Nobody answered.
The room became colder.
He looked back at the document.
At the bottom of the page was another signature.
A name he recognized.
A name that made his stomach tighten.
Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to be protecting his wife.
Leandro turned the page completely.
And saw the date.
The same day he left for his business trip.
Then his phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
Only six words.
"Ask your wife about the locked room."
Leandro stared at the screen.
Then he looked toward the second floor.
Because he remembered something.
There was one room in the mansion Camila had never entered.
And the door had always been locked.
May you like
Until tonight.
The lock clicked open by itself.
