Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Knew the Truth

The figure stepped out from the shadows.

Leandro felt every muscle in his body freeze.

Camila stood beside him, unable to move.

The person walking toward them was someone who should not exist.

Someone whose funeral Leandro had attended.

Someone whose name had been written in every company record as deceased.

"Father..."

The word left Leandro's mouth before he could stop it.

Alejandro Vale stopped beneath the dim garden lights.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

His eyes were filled with regret.

Not surprise.

Not fear.

Regret.

Leandro stared at him.

His entire world seemed to collapse in a single moment.

For years, he had believed he lost his father.

He had believed the last memory of him was lying in a hospital bed, weak and unable to speak.

He had believed he carried that pain alone.

But now...

His father was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Watching him.

"Why?"

That was the only word Leandro could say.

Alejandro looked down.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Leandro laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?"

His voice became louder.

"You let me bury you."

Camila reached for his arm.

"Leandro..."

He pulled his hand away.

Not from her.

From the pain.

"You knew?"

Camila's eyes filled with tears.

"I knew he was alive."

The answer hurt more than anything else.

Leandro turned toward her.

"You knew?"

She nodded slowly.

"But I never wanted you to find out like this."

He looked between his wife and his father.

Two people he trusted most.

Two people who had hidden the biggest secret of his life.

"How long?"

Camila looked down.

"Since before we married."

Leandro stepped back.

Before they married.

The words echoed.

His father walked closer.

"Leandro, listen to me."

"No."

His father stopped.

"No more secrets."

The old man looked at him.

And for the first time, Leandro saw how tired he looked.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"I made mistakes."

"You disappeared."

"I had to."

"You abandoned your family."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

"I saved your life."

The sentence silenced him.

Leandro stared.

"What?"

His father looked toward the mansion.

"Your mother was not the person you thought she was."

The wind moved through the garden.

Everything felt unreal.

Leandro shook his head.

"Stop."

He looked at Camila.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

His voice cracked.

"Everyone keeps telling me there is something I don't know."

He pointed toward the mansion.

"Then tell me everything."

Alejandro nodded.

"You deserve that."

They walked toward an old garden house behind the fountain.

A small building Leandro had never paid attention to.

His father unlocked the door.

Inside was a hidden room.

Not large.

Not luxurious.

Just a place filled with old files.

Photographs.

Documents.

Evidence.

Leandro looked around.

"This was here the whole time?"

Alejandro nodded.

"I built it after I discovered what they were doing."

"What they were doing?"

His father opened a file.

Inside were copies of financial records.

The same ones Leandro had found.

But there was more.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

And signatures.

Leandro recognized every name.

His family.

His closest advisors.

People he trusted.

"They stole from the company for years."

Alejandro's voice was quiet.

"I confronted them."

Leandro looked at him.

"And they tried to kill you."

His father didn't answer immediately.

That was the answer.

Camila stood beside the door.

Leandro looked at her.

"How did you know?"

She took a breath.

"My father was investigating too."

She walked toward the table.

"He found out your family was moving money through different companies."

She touched one of the documents.

"He wanted to tell Alejandro."

Leandro looked at his father.

"What happened?"

Alejandro looked away.

"Before he could, he was killed."

Silence.

Leandro felt sick.

His wife's father.

His own father.

Both men had discovered the same truth.

Both men had paid a price.

"And my mother?"

Nobody spoke.

That silence told him enough.

Leandro's expression changed.

"No."

Alejandro looked at him.

"Your mother was not alone."

Leandro walked away from the table.

He needed air.

He needed something that made sense.

Because the woman who raised him...

The woman who taught him about family...

Had been hiding behind a smile for years.

Then he remembered something.

Camila.

The apron.

The garbage bags.

The humiliation.

All because she knew.

"Why did she stay?"

Alejandro looked confused.

"Who?"

"Camila."

Everyone became quiet.

Leandro looked at his wife.

"Why didn't you leave?"

Camila looked at him.

Because that was the question he truly needed answered.

Not about money.

Not about the company.

Not about his father.

Her.

She swallowed.

"Because I promised you."

His expression softened slightly.

"Promised me what?"

"That I would stand beside you."

Leandro stared.

"Even when I wasn't there."

A tear fell from her eye.

"I thought if I left, they would destroy everything your father and my father built."

Alejandro looked at Camila.

"You carried this alone for too long."

She gave a small smile.

"I wasn't completely alone."

She looked at Leandro.

"I always had hope you would come back."

Those words broke something inside him.

Because while he was away building an empire...

His wife was fighting a war inside his own home.

Suddenly, Alejandro reached into a drawer.

He removed a small recording device.

"I need you to hear this."

Leandro looked at it.

"What is it?"

"Proof."

He pressed the button.

At first, there was only static.

Then voices.

Leandro immediately recognized one.

Victoria.

His mother.

"If Camila speaks, we lose everything."

Another voice answered.

A man's voice.

Richard.

"Then make sure she doesn't."

Leandro's blood turned cold.

The recording continued.

"We need to control Leandro."

Victoria said.

"He trusts his wife."

Richard replied.

"Then make him believe she betrayed him."

The audio stopped.

Nobody moved.

Leandro stared at the device.

They had planned everything.

The lies.

The distance.

The suffering.

His own mother had tried to turn him against his wife.

He looked at Camila.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"Don't apologize."

"I should have seen it."

"You trusted the people you loved."

Her voice was gentle.

"That is not a crime."

Before Leandro could respond, his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

He looked at the screen.

A new message appeared.

"Your father told you the truth."

A second message arrived.

"Now ask him about the night he disappeared."

Leandro looked at Alejandro.

His father's expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Who sent that?"

Alejandro did not answer.

Leandro stepped closer.

"Who?"

His father looked toward the garden house door.

Then whispered:

"The person who has been watching us from the beginning."

The lights inside the garden house suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Camila grabbed Leandro's arm.

Someone moved outside.

A shadow passed across the window.

Then the door handle slowly began to turn...

May you like

And a familiar voice whispered from the other side:

"Leandro, you need to know what your father did before he disappeared."
