Chapter 3 - The Room That Was Never Meant To Be Opened

The locked door opened slowly.
Leandro stood at the end of the hallway, staring at the dark room behind it.
For eight months, that door had remained untouched.
He remembered asking Camila about it once.
She had smiled.
"Your father used that room for important things."
At the time, he thought nothing of it.
Now everything felt different.
Every answer he had accepted suddenly looked like a lie.
Adrian stood behind him.
"You don't have to go inside."
Leandro looked at him.
"Why?"
Adrian hesitated.
"Because once you know what's in there, you can't pretend you don't."
Those words stayed in Leandro's mind.
He slowly pushed the door open.
The room smelled old.
Not abandoned.
Hidden.
There was a difference.
Dust covered the furniture, but someone had been inside recently.
A chair was moved away from the desk.
A drawer was slightly open.
A file folder sat on top of the table.
Waiting.
Leandro walked in.
His eyes moved across the room.
This had been his father's private office.
A place where business decisions were made.
A place where family secrets were protected.
He walked toward the desk.
Adrian stayed near the door.
"You found this yesterday?"
Adrian nodded.
"I wasn't looking for it."
Leandro opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
The first one showed Camila.
Years earlier.
Before they married.
She was standing beside him at a small restaurant.
They were young.
Happy.
The second photo showed the same moment from another angle.
But someone had written something on the back.
Leandro turned it over.
Five words.
"She knows what we did."
His expression changed.
"What is this?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Leandro picked up another photo.
This time, it was a picture of Camila entering the mansion.
The date was only two weeks after their wedding.
Another note.
"Watch her carefully."
His fingers tightened around the paper.
"My family was watching my wife?"
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
"I told you. You don't know everything."
Leandro turned toward him.
"Then start talking."
Adrian looked down.
"I found out something before you came back."
"What?"
"Mother didn't want Camila here from the beginning."
Leandro stared.
"Why?"
Adrian took a breath.
"Because Camila discovered something."
"What?"
"I don't know."
Leandro looked back at the files.
"Then why are you helping me?"
Adrian was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
"Because I saw what they did to her."
That sentence changed something.
Leandro had spent years believing his family was powerful because they were united.
But maybe they were united because they were hiding something.
He returned to the desk.
There was a small locked box inside the bottom drawer.
Unlike everything else in the room, it looked new.
Recently placed.
He picked it up.
A name was carved into the top.
Camila.
Leandro froze.
"Why would my father's office have a box with my wife's name?"
Adrian looked shocked.
"I've never seen that before."
Leandro searched for a key.
Nothing.
He turned the box over.
A small crack appeared on the bottom.
Something had been forced open before.
Someone had already tried to get inside.
He found a thin metal piece on the floor.
Using it carefully, he opened the box.
Inside was a letter.
No envelope.
No date.
Only Camila's name.
Leandro unfolded it.
The handwriting immediately caught his attention.
It wasn't Camila's.
It was his father's.
The first line made his heart stop.
"Leandro, if you are reading this, then they failed to keep her silent."
He read faster.
"My son, I need you to understand something. The woman you married is not the problem. She is the only person who tried to protect this family."
Leandro looked up.
Protect this family?
The words didn't make sense.
He continued reading.
"Your mother and the others will tell you Camila changed. They will tell you she became difficult. They will tell you she brought problems into this house."
His hand shook.
"But the truth is simple."
He turned the page.
"The moment Camila discovered what happened before your wedding, they decided she could never be trusted."
Leandro stopped.
Before their wedding?
What happened before their wedding?
He read the next sentence.
"She found the documents hidden in my office. She found proof that someone in this family had been stealing from the company."
Leandro's eyes widened.
The company.
His company.
The one he built after taking over his father's empire.
He continued.
"Camila wanted to tell you. I stopped her."
The room became silent.
"Not because I wanted to protect the person responsible."
Leandro held his breath.
"Because I was afraid of what would happen if you knew."
The next page was missing.
Someone had ripped it out.
Leandro searched through the box.
Nothing.
Only one final object remained.
A small USB drive.
He picked it up.
Adrian stepped closer.
"What is that?"
Leandro looked at it.
"I don't know."
But deep down, he knew.
This was why someone had hidden everything.
This was why Camila suffered in silence.
This was why his family was afraid.
He took the USB drive.
"We're going to find out."
Before they could leave, footsteps echoed outside.
Someone was coming.
Leandro quickly closed the box.
The office door moved.
Adrian whispered:
"Someone knows we're here."
The handle turned.
Leandro stood still.
The door opened.
Victoria appeared.
But she wasn't alone.
Behind her stood a man Leandro hadn't seen in years.
A man he believed was dead.
His father's former business partner.
Richard Vale.
Leandro stared at him.
Impossible.
Richard smiled.
"You finally found the room."
Leandro stepped forward.
"How are you alive?"
Richard looked at the USB drive in his hand.
Then he looked at Victoria.
And said:
"Because your mother and I were hoping you would find that before Camila told you the truth."
Leandro's face changed.
"Before Camila told me what?"
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old photograph.
Then placed it on the desk.
Leandro looked down.
The picture showed Camila.
Standing beside someone.
Someone Leandro recognized.
His own father.
But the date on the photograph was impossible.
May you like
Because it was taken...
three years after his father died.
