Chapter 8 - A Cradle Under Guard

The footsteps stopped above them.

“Elena?”

Adrien moved instinctively in front of her.

Then caught himself.

Elena touched his arm.

“Stay beside me.”

He did.

A young man appeared at the top of the stairs.

Twenty-seven.

Lean.

Dark hair.

Gray-blue eyes.

Adrien’s eyes.

Daniel’s gaze moved from Elena to Adrien.

“So it’s true.”

Elena could barely breathe.

“Daniel?”

He descended slowly.

“You look like Mom.”

Tears filled Elena’s eyes.

“You remember her?”

“Every day.”

She crossed the distance and hugged him.

Daniel stiffened.

Then his arms closed around her.

Elena sobbed against the brother she had mourned for most of her life.

Adrien looked away, giving them privacy.

When Daniel finally released her, he studied Adrien.

“You’re younger than I expected.”

Adrien’s mouth twitched.

“I’m trying not to take that personally.”

Daniel did not smile.

“You’re technically my biological father.”

“Yes.”

“And your newborn is my half-brother.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena is my sister.”

“Yes.”

“This family tree needs professional help.”

Elena laughed through her tears.

It was the first thing Daniel said that sounded like family.

They returned to the hotel only after Bell verified Daniel’s identity.

DNA confirmed it.

Daniel explained that Gabriel had raised him under different names.

He had always known Elena existed.

He had been forbidden to approach.

“Why were you near my bookstore?”

“Because Gabriel disappeared six months ago. I didn’t know who to trust.”

“Why not tell me?”

“I saw Adrien’s men watching you.”

Adrien looked ashamed.

Daniel continued.

“I assumed he was the danger.”

“I probably looked like it.”

“You did.”

Adrien accepted that too.

Luca woke.

Daniel stared at the bassinet.

“That’s him?”

Elena nodded.

Daniel approached.

The newborn opened his eyes.

Daniel laughed softly.

“Oh, come on.”

Adrien raised an eyebrow.

Daniel pointed between himself and Luca.

“You really only have one design?”

For the first time, Adrien laughed with his adult son.

The sound surprised everyone.

Then Daniel became serious.

“Gabriel believed someone inside Moretti Logistics was rebuilding the old network.”

“Marco found the breach,” Adrien said.

Daniel’s expression sharpened.

“Marco?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t trust him.”

Adrien stared.

“Why?”

“Gabriel gave me a list of names before he disappeared.”

Daniel pulled a folded paper from his jacket.

Marco Vale appeared third.

Adrien read it.

“He’s been with me fifteen years.”

“So was Vittorio.”

Adrien looked at him.

Daniel did not retreat.

Elena stepped between the emotional lines.

“A name on a list isn’t proof.”

“No,” Daniel agreed. “But this might be.”

He showed them bank transfers.

Money had moved through shell companies connected to Marco.

Adrien said nothing for a long time.

Then he called Bell.

Not Marco.

That choice told Elena everything.

Marco was quietly detained for questioning.

He denied involvement.

The transfers had been made in his name, but he claimed they were fabricated.

Adrien wanted to believe him.

Elena could see it.

But he did not interfere with the investigation.

That night, Adrien stood beside Luca’s cradle.

“Everything I thought I knew about my family was manufactured.”

Elena joined him.

“Not everything.”

He looked at her.

“This is real.”

She touched Luca’s tiny hand.

Adrien whispered, “I want to be his father.”

“You are.”

“I mean properly.”

“That depends on what properly means.”

“Not guards everywhere.”

“Good start.”

“No trackers.”

“Excellent.”

“No deciding things because I think I know better.”

“That one may kill you.”

“Probably.”

Elena smiled.

Adrien became serious.

“And you?”

“What about me?”

“Do I still have a chance?”

She looked at him.

“With Luca?”

“With you.”

Elena’s answer took time.

“Yes.”

Hope appeared in his face.

“But not because we have a baby.”

“I know.”

“And not because danger pushed us together.”

“I know.”

“You earn it.”

“Every day.”

She nodded.

“Then yes.”

Before either could say more, Daniel entered.

“Adrien.”

Something in his tone erased the moment.

“What?”

“Bell just called.”

Marco had escaped custody.

Adrien’s expression hardened.

“How?”

“Someone inside the department helped him.”

Daniel placed a tablet on the table.

A security photograph showed Marco leaving through a service entrance.

Beside him walked a woman.

Adrien leaned closer.

The woman’s face was finally visible.

He stopped breathing.

Elena knew before he spoke.

“Sofia.”

May you like

His mother was alive.

And she had just helped Marco escape.
