Chapter 13 - The Truth About MRL-27B

The grave was empty.

It had always been empty.

Isabel stood beside Elena beneath a plain cemetery canopy while investigators opened the old burial vault.

Nothing.

No remains.

No coffin fragments.

Only a metal case.

Elena looked at her mother.

“You knew?”

“No.”

For once, Elena believed her immediately.

Bell opened the case.

Inside were original MRL-27B records.

Elias had hidden them there years earlier.

The files revealed the full program.

Vittorio funded it.

Elias designed it.

Miguel unknowingly opened the first door, then knowingly helped conceal evidence afterward.

Camille provided medical access before eventually turning against them.

Sofia discovered the operation.

Isabel protected Daniel.

Gabriel moved him.

The truth was ugly because no one was entirely innocent.

Except the children.

Daniel read his file alone.

Then he came outside.

Elena waited.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Me neither.”

He laughed sadly.

“That helps.”

She hugged him.

This time he hugged her first.

MRL-27B had not been a product code.

It stood for Moretti Research Line, subject group 27B.

Daniel was subject 27B-06.

The pharmaceutical shipping system had merely been the transportation network.

Luca’s birth had triggered dormant monitoring software because his hospital bloodwork matched the Moretti genetic markers Elias had programmed decades earlier.

That was how they found Elena.

Not magic.

Not coincidence.

A forgotten criminal system waking up when a child was born.

Adrien ordered every remaining MRL server surrendered.

He announced the closure of the freight division associated with his father’s network.

Victims were contacted privately through investigators.

Compensation funds were established without requiring silence agreements.

Elena watched him dismantle pieces of his inheritance.

“You built that company.”

“I can build something else.”

“You don’t have to destroy everything.”

“I’m not.”

He looked at her.

“I’m choosing what deserves to survive.”

She understood.

Weeks passed.

Luca grew.

Danger slowly became paperwork, court hearings, evidence reviews, and sleepless nights caused by ordinary newborn problems instead of assassins.

Adrien visited Elena’s apartment.

He always knocked.

Even when she told him he could use the key.

“You gave me a key,” he pointed out.

“For emergencies.”

“You once defined running out of coffee as an emergency.”

“That was different.”

Daniel began visiting too.

He refused to call Adrien Dad.

Then accidentally did it twice more.

Adrien never mentioned either occasion.

Sofia moved into a small house outside the city.

She and Adrien were rebuilding something more complicated than a relationship.

Trust after eleven years of grief required patience.

Isabel and Elena were doing the same.

Nobody received instant forgiveness.

That made the healing real.

One evening, Elena found Adrien asleep on her couch with Luca on his chest.

She stood in the doorway.

The terrifying Adrien Moretti.

The man who once sent six guards when she requested one.

Now asleep beneath a ridiculous yellow baby blanket.

Luca’s tiny fist rested against his father’s neck tattoo.

Elena took a photograph.

Adrien opened one eye.

“Delete that.”

“Never.”

“I have a reputation.”

“Not anymore.”

He smiled.

Then his phone vibrated.

The expression disappeared.

Bell.

Elias’s trial preparation had uncovered one final hidden account.

Someone had continued making payments after Elias was arrested.

Meaning Elias had not been acting alone.

Adrien sat up carefully.

“Who?”

Bell answered.

“We traced the authorization.”

Adrien listened.

Then looked toward Elena.

“What?”

He ended the call.

“The account belongs to someone we know.”

“Who?”

Before he could answer, someone knocked on Elena’s apartment door.

Three slow knocks.

Daniel, who had been in the kitchen, stepped into the hall.

Adrien handed Luca to Elena.

Nobody moved toward the door until Elena nodded.

Adrien opened it.

Marco stood outside.

Blood covered his shirt.

He collapsed into Adrien’s arms.

“Don’t trust the evidence,” Marco gasped.

“Who did this?”

Marco looked directly at Elena.

May you like

Then he whispered a name.

“Gabriel.”
