Chapter 7 - The Secret Elena Carried

Elena read the sentence twice.
Adrien did not react.
That frightened her more than anger would have.
“Adrien?”
“My mother died.”
“I know.”
“I saw her body.”
Isabel’s voice came from the phone after Bell called her.
“No, you saw a sealed coffin.”
Adrien’s face changed.
“My father told me—”
“Vittorio controlled the funeral.”
The possibility was unbearable.
Sofia might have survived.
Or someone wanted Adrien to believe she had.
Both possibilities were dangerous.
Detective Bell traced the access card.
It was genuine.
The magnetic strip had been used recently.
Three weeks earlier.
Moretti Logistics headquarters.
Adrien called Marco.
“Pull the footage.”
Ten minutes later, Marco sent the video.
At 3:12 a.m., a woman entered an executive elevator.
Her face remained hidden beneath a hood.
But when she reached for the panel, the camera captured her hand.
A silver ring.
Adrien knew it.
His mother’s wedding ring.
Elena sat beside him.
“Could someone have stolen it?”
“Yes.”
“Could it be her?”
Adrien looked at the frozen image.
“I don’t know.”
Luca stirred.
Adrien glanced toward him.
That movement brought him back.
Elena understood now why she had left.
Adrien’s fear did not make him weak.
It made him controlling.
He tried to make the world obey because uncertainty terrified him.
Now uncertainty surrounded everything.
Yet he remained seated.
He did not summon an army.
He asked Elena, “What do you think we should do?”
She almost cried.
“Find facts.”
He nodded.
“Facts.”
The next morning, Elena finally told him the secret she had withheld.
“There’s something about the pregnancy you don’t know.”
Adrien became still.
“Okay.”
“The night I left you, somebody had already contacted me.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
She had received an anonymous envelope at the bookstore.
Inside was a photograph of Adrien at eighteen.
A medical consent form.
And a note.
ASK HIM HOW MANY CHILDREN HIS BLOOD HAS CREATED.
“I thought it was a threat.”
“It was.”
“I didn’t understand it.”
“So you left.”
“That wasn’t why I left. But it made me more afraid to tell you about Luca.”
Adrien looked wounded.
“I wish you’d trusted me.”
“I wish you’d given me reasons to.”
He accepted that.
No defense.
No excuse.
Later, they visited the bookstore under police escort.
The two brass keys were tested against every old cabinet Isabel had left behind.
Nothing.
Then Elena remembered the rare book.
The one Adrien had come searching for three years earlier.
It remained in a locked display case.
Adrien removed it.
Inventory number 614.
Inside the back cover was a tiny keyhole.
Elena inserted her mother’s brass key.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a memory card.
They played it on an offline laptop.
Sofia appeared.
Older than in the previous recording.
Alive after the date of her supposed death.
Adrien sat down hard.
Sofia spoke directly into the camera.
“Adrien, if you’re watching this, then Vittorio failed to destroy everything.”
Adrien covered his mouth.
“I am alive. But I cannot come home.”
Elena squeezed his hand.
Sofia continued.
“The program was larger than Daniel. Your father stole genetic material from men whose families he wanted to control. Daniel was the only child connected to you. When I discovered him, I tried to take him out of Vittorio’s reach.”
Adrien whispered, “Jesus.”
Sofia’s image flickered.
“Isabel helped me. Gabriel helped me. Camille helped me. We became the reason MRL-27B was shut down.”
Then Sofia said something that changed Elena’s understanding of her entire relationship.
“Elena, if you are watching too, I owe you an apology.”
Elena leaned closer.
“I placed the book in your mother’s store records. Years later, I anonymously directed Adrien toward it. I hoped that if you ever met, you might eventually find the evidence together.”
Adrien stared at Elena.
Their meeting had not been random.
But Sofia added:
“I did not expect you to love each other. That part belongs only to you.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
The video continued.
“There is one final archive. It contains every name connected to MRL-27B.”
“Where?” Adrien whispered.
Sofia smiled sadly.
“The answer is where Adrien learned to swim.”
The recording ended.
Adrien knew immediately.
His childhood home.
The indoor pool had been sealed after Sofia’s death.
That afternoon they entered the abandoned Moretti estate.
Dust covered the halls.
Adrien led Elena downstairs.
The empty pool echoed beneath their footsteps.
At the deep end was an old diving platform.
Adrien remembered hiding beneath it as a child.
They found a metal panel.
Behind it was a safe.
Two keyholes.
Elena stared.
Two keys.
Hers.
And the one from Locker 614.
They inserted them simultaneously.
The safe clicked.
Inside were dozens of files.
On top lay a photograph.
A young man stared at the camera.
Dark hair.
Gray-blue eyes.
Daniel.
Alive.
Behind the photograph was an address.
Adrien read it.
Elena recognized the street.
“That’s three blocks from my bookstore.”
Adrien turned the photograph over.
Fresh handwriting covered the back.
HE HAS BEEN WATCHING YOU TOO.
Then footsteps sounded above the empty pool.
Someone had entered the house.
A man’s voice called down.
“Elena?”
She froze.
She had never heard the voice before.
But Adrien had.
May you like
His face went white.
“That’s Daniel.”
