Chapter 4 - The Name Beneath the Barcode

Adrien moved between Elena and the doorway.

The woman raised both hands.

“I’m not armed.”

“Name.”

“Dr. Camille Laurent.”

Elena looked toward Detective Bell.

Bell checked with security.

“She’s a physician.”

“Was,” Camille corrected. “I retired.”

Adrien stared at the necklace.

“That belonged to my mother.”

“Yes.”

“How did you get it?”

“She gave it to me.”

“When?”

“The night she died.”

Adrien’s jaw tightened.

Camille looked past him toward Luca.

Her face softened.

“So she was right.”

Adrien stepped closer.

“About what?”

“Your eyes.”

Silence.

Camille sat only after Elena invited her.

She had worked at St. Catherine’s eleven years earlier.

Sofia Moretti had arrived not for a routine procedure, but secretly.

“She believed someone inside the Moretti organization was trafficking counterfeit medical products,” Camille explained.

Adrien’s expression darkened.

“MRL-27B.”

Camille nodded.

“Sofia discovered it.”

“Who was responsible?”

“I never knew.”

“Why genetic testing?”

Camille looked uncomfortable.

“Because the counterfeit shipments were only part of what she discovered.”

Adrien waited.

“Your father had been using Moretti Logistics to move private medical records.”

“For what?”

“Leverage. Blackmail. Paternity information. Adoption records. Anything wealthy people would pay to bury.”

Elena felt sick.

“And the child?”

Camille looked at Adrien.

“Sofia discovered one file that terrified her.”

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

Adrien said nothing.

Camille continued.

“There was a child registered under a false surname. A boy. Sofia believed he was biologically connected to you.”

Elena’s eyes widened.

Adrien looked almost angry.

“I had no child.”

“You may not have known.”

“That would be difficult to miss.”

“Not if someone used stored genetic material without your knowledge.”

The room became silent.

Adrien’s face drained of color.

Elena whispered, “What?”

Camille explained carefully.

Years earlier, after Adrien had been injured in a car accident, biological samples had been stored during treatment.

Someone obtained access.

Sofia found evidence suggesting those samples had later been used in an illegal fertility procedure.

Adrien sat down.

Elena had never seen him look physically stunned.

“There could be another son.”

“There could have been,” Camille said.

“Been?”

“The records disappeared after Sofia died.”

Adrien stared at the floor.

“Did my father know?”

Camille’s silence answered.

Adrien stood.

Elena said his name.

He stopped.

Again.

That small act mattered more than anyone else in the room understood.

“What do you need?” she asked.

“The truth.”

“Then get the truth. Not revenge.”

He looked at her.

“Those are sometimes the same road.”

“No. They aren’t.”

Luca stirred against Elena’s chest.

Adrien’s gaze dropped toward him.

The anger left his face by degrees.

“You’re right.”

Camille removed an envelope from her purse.

“Sofia gave me this.”

Inside was the original MRL-27B shipping manifest.

The barcode matched the hospital carton.

Beneath the printed code, Sofia had written a sequence by hand.

27B-0614-GM.

Adrien stared at the final initials.

“GM.”

Camille nodded.

“Gabriel Moretti.”

Elena frowned.

“The driver?”

Adrien shook his head.

“His surname was Moretti because he was family.”

“What family?”

Adrien’s voice dropped.

“My uncle.”

Gabriel had been his father’s younger half-brother.

Officially, Gabriel worked as Sofia’s driver.

Unofficially, he was the only member of the family she trusted.

The night Sofia died, Gabriel had supposedly died in a highway crash.

Yet hospital footage appeared to show him alive.

“Maybe the footage isn’t current,” Elena said.

Bell shook her head.

“The timestamp checks out.”

Camille looked frightened.

“Then Gabriel survived.”

Adrien turned to her.

“Where would he go?”

“I don’t know.”

“You knew him.”

“I knew Sofia.”

“That necklace says she trusted you.”

Camille touched it unconsciously.

“She told me one thing before she went into surgery.”

“What?”

“If anything happened, I was supposed to find Gabriel.”

“Where?”

Camille looked toward Luca.

“Philadelphia Central Station. Locker 614.”

Detective Bell immediately contacted transit police.

The locker still existed.

It had been prepaid under a long-term storage arrangement.

Nobody had opened it in eleven years.

Bell insisted Adrien remain at the hospital.

To Elena’s surprise, he agreed.

Two hours later, police opened Locker 614.

Inside was a black briefcase.

A photograph.

A key.

And a sealed DNA report.

Bell sent scanned copies.

Adrien opened the DNA report.

His name appeared first.

ADRIEN MORETTI.

Below it:

PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.998%.

Then another name.

Elena watched Adrien read it.

His lips parted.

The name belonged to a boy.

DANIEL CRUZ.

Elena stopped breathing.

“No.”

Adrien looked at her.

“Elena?”

She took the tablet.

Her hands began shaking.

Daniel Cruz.

Her mother had used that name only once.

The name of Elena’s baby brother.

The child who, according to her mother, had died shortly after birth.

Elena looked at Adrien.

“My mother told me Daniel died twenty-seven years ago.”

Adrien’s face changed.

“Elena, how old are you?”

“Twenty-eight.”

Camille suddenly stood.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Elena stared at her.

“Isabel Cruz.”

Camille backed away.

Adrien noticed.

“You know that name.”

Camille did not answer.

Bell moved toward her.

“Dr. Laurent?”

Camille’s eyes filled with fear.

“I was told Isabel was dead.”

Elena stood despite the pain.

“Who told you?”

Camille looked at her.

Then at Adrien.

“Your father.”

Adrien’s phone rang.

UNKNOWN CALLER.

He answered on speaker.

Nobody spoke.

Then came a man’s voice.

Older.

Rough.

Familiar to Adrien from childhood.

“Don’t trust Camille.”

Adrien went rigid.

“Gabriel?”

The voice continued.

“If Elena wants to know what happened to her brother, bring her to St. Catherine’s.”

A click sounded.

The call ended.

Then a second message arrived.

One photograph.

A man stood outside the abandoned clinic.

Beside him was someone Elena recognized immediately.

May you like

Her father.

Miguel Cruz.
