Chapter 12 - The Night Mercy General Went Dark

The lights went out.
Emergency lamps flashed red.
Luca screamed.
Elena grabbed him.
Adrien moved toward the door.
Then stopped.
“What do you want?”
“Stay with us.”
He stayed.
Bell’s officers sealed the floor.
Sofia stood near the wall, stunned by the revelation.
Camille had lied.
Elias was Vittorio’s first son.
That made everything personal.
He had not merely helped Vittorio.
He had spent his life trying to prove he deserved the Moretti legacy.
The power.
The bloodline.
The control.
A voice came through the hospital intercom.
“Adrien.”
Everyone froze.
Elias.
“You inherited everything that should have been mine.”
Adrien looked at Bell.
She signaled technicians to trace the transmission.
Elias continued.
“The company. Sofia. The name.”
Adrien answered through the room phone.
“You can have the name.”
Silence.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
Adrien looked at Luca.
“I think I spent half my life believing the name mattered.”
Elena watched him.
“It doesn’t.”
Elias laughed.
“You’re lying.”
“No. I have what matters.”
His eyes met Elena’s.
Then Luca’s.
Then Daniel’s.
“A family that can choose whether it wants me.”
Elias became silent.
The statement destroyed the logic on which his entire life had been built.
Bell located the signal.
Basement laboratory.
Police moved.
Daniel wanted to join them.
Adrien said nothing until Daniel asked his opinion.
“I want you safe.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Adrien breathed.
“I think you should decide.”
Daniel nodded.
“I’m staying with Elena.”
Relief crossed Adrien’s face.
“Thank you.”
Adrien went with Bell only as far as the secured stairwell.
Elias was trapped below.
Police ordered him out.
Instead, smoke began pouring from the laboratory.
“He’s burning the archive,” Sofia said.
But copies had already been made.
Evidence was secured.
For the first time, destroying records would not erase victims.
Elias emerged through another corridor.
He held no weapon.
Only a hard drive.
Bell ordered him to stop.
He ran.
Adrien saw him.
For a fraction of a second, the old instinct returned.
Chase.
Punish.
End it personally.
Then he heard Elena behind him.
“Adrien.”
He stopped.
Police tackled Elias twenty feet away.
No revenge.
No blood.
No inheritance of Vittorio’s violence.
Just handcuffs.
Elias looked up at Adrien.
“You’re weak.”
Adrien walked closer.
“No.”
He looked back toward Elena.
“I finally learned what strength costs.”
Elias was arrested.
The immediate threat was over.
But the investigation was only beginning.
Camille was detained.
Miguel agreed to testify.
Sofia provided records.
Gabriel provided names.
Marco was cleared.
Moretti Logistics opened every restricted archive to federal investigators.
Adrien did something his father would never have done.
He surrendered control.
Three days later, Elena prepared to take Luca home.
“Which home?” Adrien asked.
“My apartment.”
He nodded.
“You’re not going to argue?”
“I’ve developed survival instincts.”
She smiled.
“You can visit.”
“Visit?”
“Yes.”
“How often?”
“Don’t push it.”
“Understood.”
Then Bell entered.
Her expression was serious.
“We found something in Elias’s hard drive.”
Elena’s smile disappeared.
“What?”
“A scheduled message.”
“For whom?”
“You.”
Bell handed her a tablet.
The message had been written before Elias entered the hospital.
It contained no threat.
Only coordinates.
And one sentence:
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOUR MOTHER REALLY CHOSE YOU OVER DANIEL, GO HERE.
Elena stared at the coordinates.
Isabel recognized them.
Her face went white.
“That’s the cemetery.”
“What cemetery?”
May you like
Isabel whispered the answer.
“The place where we buried the child everyone believed was Daniel.”
