Chapter 14 - The Choice Adrien Never Expected

Gabriel disappeared before police reached him.

Marco survived.

The bullet had passed through his shoulder.

From his hospital bed, he explained what happened.

Gabriel had asked to meet privately.

He claimed he had discovered a final MRL account.

When Marco arrived, Gabriel shot him.

“Why?” Adrien asked.

“Because I saw what was on his laptop.”

“What?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

Marco swallowed.

“To Elias.”

Adrien’s face hardened.

Gabriel had spent decades claiming to protect Daniel.

Perhaps he had.

But protection could become possession.

Elena understood that better than most.

Bell reconstructed the truth.

Gabriel had helped Sofia escape.

He had protected Daniel.

But over the years, he became convinced only he could decide what was safe.

He manipulated records.

Moved Daniel without consent.

Watched Elena.

And eventually reopened pieces of MRL to monitor threats.

Elias discovered the system and exploited it.

Gabriel had not created the new danger intentionally.

But his obsession with control gave Elias the door.

Adrien stared at the evidence.

“He became what he was protecting us from.”

Elena looked at him.

“Yes.”

The lesson required no explanation.

Adrien understood.

Gabriel contacted Daniel directly.

“Come alone.”

Daniel showed Elena the message.

“I’m not going alone.”

“Good.”

“But I am going.”

Adrien nodded.

They coordinated with Bell.

Gabriel chose the old Moretti estate.

The place where he had once hidden Sofia.

Daniel entered.

Gabriel stood beside the empty pool.

“You brought police.”

“Yes.”

“I raised you.”

“You did.”

“I protected you.”

“You also controlled my entire life.”

“To keep you alive.”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“That doesn’t make every choice yours.”

Gabriel looked devastated.

“I loved you like a son.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Because loving me doesn’t give you ownership of me.”

In the surveillance van, Elena looked at Adrien.

His eyes filled.

Those were her words.

Now they belonged to Daniel too.

Gabriel lowered the gun he had been holding.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“Then stop deciding for me.”

Police entered.

Gabriel surrendered.

No final shootout.

No heroic bloodshed.

Just an old man discovering too late that fear could corrupt love even when love had been real.

Afterward, Daniel sat beside Adrien outside the estate.

“I don’t know what to feel.”

“You don’t have to know tonight.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That sounded almost emotionally healthy.”

“Don’t tell anyone.”

Daniel laughed.

Then quietly said, “Thanks, Dad.”

This time neither pretended it had not happened.

Months later, Elias pleaded guilty after the evidence became overwhelming.

Gabriel accepted responsibility for his crimes.

Camille cooperated.

Miguel testified.

MRL-27B was permanently dismantled.

Adrien transformed Moretti Logistics.

He sold divisions linked to Vittorio.

He kept the legitimate transportation business and created independent oversight.

No secret routes.

No private medical shipments.

No hidden archives.

Elena reopened her bookstore.

One afternoon, Adrien walked inside carrying Luca.

Customers stared.

Adrien Moretti wearing a baby carrier had become one of Elena’s favorite sights.

“You’re late.”

“Your son vomited on a board member.”

“My son?”

“Our son.”

“That’s better.”

He placed a small box on the counter.

Elena narrowed her eyes.

“What is that?”

“Before you panic, it is not a proposal.”

She relaxed.

“Good.”

Adrien looked wounded.

“That was enthusiastic.”

“I’m not ready.”

“I know.”

Inside was a key.

Not to his penthouse.

Not to an estate.

A key to the empty storefront next door.

“What is this?”

“You said you wanted a children’s reading room someday.”

Elena stared at him.

“I said that two years ago.”

“I remember.”

“You bought the building?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I negotiated a lease option. In your name. You decide whether you want it.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

That was the gift.

Not the room.

The choice.

She kissed him.

Luca squealed between them.

Adrien smiled against her lips.

“Is that a yes?”

“To the reading room.”

“I understood.”

“And maybe to dinner.”

“Progress.”

That evening, the three of them walked home together.

For the first time, Elena allowed herself to imagine that ordinary happiness might actually survive them.

Then she noticed an envelope beneath her apartment door.

No stamp.

No name.

Her heart accelerated.

Adrien did not touch it.

He looked at her.

“What do you want to do?”

Elena picked it up herself.

Inside was no threat.

Only an official laboratory report.

She read the first line.

Then the second.

Her knees nearly gave way.

Adrien caught her only when she reached for him.

“What is it?”

Elena looked up.

The report concerned Luca.

But it was not from Elias.

It was from the independent laboratory Bell had ordered to verify every archived sample.

At the bottom was a handwritten note from Detective Bell:

There is one final thing you and Adrien need to know about your son.

May you like

Elena turned the page.

And the first name printed there made Adrien stop breathing.
