Chapter 7 - The Twelve-Year Lie

Evelyn led them up into the small keeper's quarters near the top of the tower. The room was sparse—a small wood stove, a cot, oil lamps, and dozens of thick notebooks stacked neatly on a wooden table.
"That night in 2014," Evelyn explained, her voice low as the wind howled outside, "I discovered that Richard was embezzling millions from the family trust fund. But worse than that... I found out he was responsible for my father's sudden death the year before. Richard was a predator who married me solely for the Vance family estate."
"When I confronted him," Evelyn continued, "he smiled. He didn't argue. That very night, my car lost its brakes on the Echo Creek turnoff. I crashed through the barrier and plunged into the sea."
"How did you survive?" Julian asked.
"The ocean took me, but a local fisherman, an old friend of my family, pulled me out of the water downstream," Evelyn said. "I had broken ribs, a fractured skull, and severe hypothermia. While I was unconscious in his cabin for three days, Richard was already on television, weeping for the news cameras, announcing my 'tragic death'."
Evelyn looked at Clara with eyes filled with unbearable pain. "Richard placed a homeless woman's remains—someone who had died in a fire weeks prior—into a closed casket, paid off the county coroner, and legally declared me dead. Before I even woke up, he had full legal guardianship over you and total control over your trust."
"Why didn't you come back for me?" Clara cried, the pain of a abandoned daughter surfacing. "Why didn't you go to the police?"
"Because Richard told the press that if anyone brought forward new information about my crash, he would offer a five-million-dollar reward," Evelyn said, tears streaming down her face. "He let me know through a private message left at the cabin: If I ever showed my face, if I ever tried to contact you or the authorities, he would make your death look like an accident, too."
Clara gasped.
"I was trapped," Evelyn whispered. "If I stayed dead, you stayed alive. He held your life over my head for twelve years. I lived in hiding across the border, watching you grow up from afar through newspaper clippings and high school graduation photos... helpless to touch you, helpless to comfort you."
"Then why now?" Julian asked. "Why reveal yourself today?"
Evelyn stood up and walked over to the wooden table, pointing to a thick folder filled with legal documents.
"Because today was the day Clara turned twenty-eight and married," Evelyn said sharply. "Under my father’s will, the moment Clara signs a marriage certificate after her twenty-eighth birthday, the Vance estate permanently transfers from Richard’s temporary trusteeship into Clara’s direct legal possession. Richard’s control ends today."

"Unless..." Clara realized with horror, "...unless I married someone he picked, or unless I died before signing."
"Or unless," Evelyn said, looking at the door, "he frames your disappearance today, drains the accounts during the confusion, and leaves the country forever."
