Chapter 5 - The Cliffside Pursuit

"Julian!" Clara screamed as the truck skidded sideways across the wet asphalt.

Julian wrestled with the wheel, pumping the brakes and steering into the skid. The truck’s passenger-side tire clipped the wooden guardrail, splintering the heavy timber with a deafening crack before the vehicle straightened out, tires smoking on the damp road.

"They're trying to push us off!" Julian shouted.

The SUV lunged forward again, attempting to pin the truck against the mountain wall. But Julian knew these back roads better than Richard’s city security drivers. Just fifty yards ahead was the turnoff for Old Logger’s Pass—an unpaved, narrow dirt track overgrown with pine branches that led down toward the abandoned coastline.

"Hang on!"

Julian yanked the handbrake and cut the wheel hard to the left. The pickup shot off the paved highway and plunged down the narrow dirt path, branches scraping violently against the paint and glass.

The heavy SUV tried to follow, but its wider frame couldn't negotiate the tight turn between two massive oak trees. A sharp metallic screech echoed through the woods as the SUV clipped a tree trunk, blowing out its front tire and coming to a sudden, smoking halt at the mouth of the path.

Julian kept his foot down, navigating the bumpy dirt road as it sloped steeply downward into the thick maritime fog.

"Did we lose them?" Clara gasped, looking back through the cracked rear window.

"For now," Julian said, his breath coming fast. "Their car is stuck. But they have radios, and Richard has money. He’ll have more men down here soon."

Five minutes later, the tree line broke, revealing the desolate slate-gray shores of Echo Creek. Rising out of the mist on a rocky point stood the old, abandoned lighthouse—its white paint peeling, its iron lantern room rusted black.

Julian parked the truck beneath the shelter of a collapsed boat shed. The engine sputtered and died, leaving only the sound of crashing waves against the jagged rocks below.

Clara unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out into the cold ocean wind. She looked up at the towering structure of the lighthouse.

"She's in there," Clara whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Julian reached into his jacket, pulled out the gold locket, and placed it back into Clara's hand. "We go together. Step by step."
