Chapter 14 - Unraveling the Web

Three days later.
The quiet town of Echo Creek was inundated with national news crews. The story had exploded across every major network and social media platform across the country: "The Ghost Bride of Echo Creek: Tycoon Arrested for 12-Year Fraud and Attempted Murder."
In the state capital's federal courthouse, the full extent of Richard’s crimes was laid bare.
Investigations revealed that Richard had systematically siphoned off over forty million dollars from the Vance Trust Fund, funneled money into corrupt shell corporations, and bribed local officials to cover up Evelyn's "accidental" death. County Sheriff Miller and three officers were arrested within forty-eight hours on corruption and conspiracy charges.
Clara sat in the quiet conference room of the prosecutor’s office, holding a warm cup of tea. Julian sat beside her, his arm wrapped securely around her shoulders.
The door opened, and Evelyn walked in, accompanied by Captain Marcus Vance. For the first time in twelve years, Evelyn was dressed in clean, elegant clothes, her hair neatly styled, her face free of the shadow of constant fear.
"It's done," Marcus announced with a weary, satisfying smile. "Richard’s bail was denied. The judge locked him away until trial. Between the attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, and corporate embezzlement, he will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars."
Clara stood up and hugged her uncle, then turned to her mother.
"The trust fund?" Clara asked.
"Fully frozen and being restored to you," Evelyn said, taking Clara’s hands. "Every asset, every property... it's all coming home. Where it belongs."

Evelyn then reached into her handbag and pulled out the gold locket—repaired, polished, and fitted with a brand-new, unbreakable gold chain.
"I think this belongs to you now, Clara," Evelyn whispered gently, fastening the locket around her daughter's neck. "Permanently."
