Chapter 6 - The Truth My Father Died To Hide

The hidden door opened slowly behind us. "Clara..." I turned and saw a man standing in the darkness holding my father's old watch. But the face looking back at me was not a stranger. It was the face I had cried over eleven months ago. My father was alive.
I couldn't move.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The man standing in the doorway looked older.
Tired.
Different.
But there was no mistaking him.
The way he stood.
The way he looked at me.
The way his eyes filled with pain.
It was him.
My father.
"Clara."
His voice broke.
That single word destroyed every wall I had built since the day I buried him.
I took a step backward.
"No."
The man looked devastated.
"Clara..."
"No."
My voice became louder.
"You are not real."
Behind me, Dante didn't move.
I didn't know what he was thinking.
Maybe he was angry.
Maybe he was shocked.
Maybe he was trying to understand how a dead man had just walked into his home.
My father slowly stepped forward.
"I know what you must be feeling."
I laughed.
But there was no happiness in it.
"You know?"
Tears filled my eyes.
"You know what it felt like to watch you disappear?"
He stopped.
"You know what it felt like to sit beside your hospital bed and hear doctors tell me there was nothing more they could do?"
His face broke.
"I was there."
The words hit me.
"What?"
"I was there, Clara."
My breathing stopped.
"I watched you cry."
He looked down.
"I heard everything you said."
"Then why didn't you come back?"
Silence.
The longest silence of my life.
Finally, he whispered:
"Because coming back would have gotten you killed."
I looked at Dante.
Then back at him.
"What are you talking about?"
My father stepped into the room.
The security guards immediately raised their weapons.
Dante lifted his hand.
"Lower them."
Everyone hesitated.
"Now."
The guards obeyed.
But Dante never took his eyes off my father.
"You have a lot to explain."
My father looked at him.
"I know."
There was something between them.
Something older than me.
Older than this moment.
"You knew my father?"
Dante answered before he could.
"Yes."
I looked at him.
"You knew him your whole life."
Dante didn't deny it.
The truth hurt more because nobody was surprised.
Except me.
My father walked toward the table covered with documents.
"I wanted you to stay away from this world."
He touched the old photographs.
"But your father was never able to escape it."
"Stop saying that."
My voice shook.
"I need answers."
He looked at me.
"I know."
"Why did you fake your death?"
His eyes lowered.
"Because someone tried to kill me."
"Who?"
He looked at Dante.
Then at Rosa's photograph on the wall.
"The person who betrayed the Marino family."
The room became cold.
Again.
The same answer.
The same shadow.
The same enemy.
"But why involve me?"
My father looked heartbroken.
"I didn't."
"Someone knew about me."
"Yes."
"Someone followed my life."
"Yes."
"Someone knew where I worked."
His silence answered.
I turned away.
The pain was worse than anger.
Because I realized something.
My whole life...
someone had been watching me.
My father moved closer.
"Clara, listen to me."
"No."
I wiped my tears.
"You don't get to disappear for eleven years and suddenly tell me to listen."
His eyes filled with regret.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
I pointed toward the door.
"I buried you."
The words hurt him.
Good.
Because they hurt me too.
"I stood there."
My voice broke.
"I watched them lower your coffin."
My father closed his eyes.
"I know."
"You weren't there."
"I was."
The room went silent.
"What?"
He looked at me.
"I was there."
My entire body froze.
"The funeral?"
He nodded.
"I stood in the crowd."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because I needed to see if you were safe."
My anger mixed with confusion.
"You watched me mourn you?"
"I had no choice."
"There is always a choice."
He looked away.
"Not when the person hunting you has no limits."
Dante finally spoke.
"Who was it?"
My father looked at him.
"The same person who attacked Rosa."
Dante's face changed.
"You know who betrayed my family."
"Yes."
"Who?"
My father didn't answer.
That terrified me.
Because even now...
even after everything...
he was still afraid.
"Dad."
He looked at me.
"Tell him."
A long pause.
Then:
"Adrian."
Dante froze.
"My brother?"
My father nodded.
The room felt like it stopped.
"But he died."
"No."
My father looked directly at him.
"Adrian Marino survived."
Dante's expression became empty.
Like his mind was trying to reject the truth.
"He was the one who betrayed your father."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted power."
Dante clenched his fists.
"And my father?"
"Your father discovered what Adrian was doing."
My father looked at the photographs.
"He tried to expose him."
"And you helped him."
"Yes."
That explained everything.
The hidden symbol.
The secrets.
The lies.
The reason my father had been running.
But one question remained.
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
My father looked at me.
Because that was the question he feared most.
"Because the day I came back to you..."
He stopped.
"Adrian would have found you."
I stared at him.
"And now?"
His expression changed.
"Now he already has."
Before anyone could respond, every phone in the room vibrated.
Dante looked at his.
Then mine.
Then my father's.
The same message appeared.
A photo.
A live photo.
Taken from inside the mansion.
The image showed us standing together in the hidden room.
Someone had been watching.
The message below said:
Family reunions are always emotional.
Dante's eyes turned cold.
Then another message arrived.
Only three words.
Look at Rosa.
Everyone froze.
Dante immediately turned toward the main house.
"Mother."
We ran.
The hallway was silent.
Too silent.
Rosa's room was at the end of the corridor.
The door was slightly open.
Dante stopped.
His hand reached for the handle.
He looked back at me.
Fear returned to his eyes.
Not for himself.
For her.
Then he opened the door.
May you like
And inside the room...
Rosa was gone.
