Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Came Back From The Dead

The voice echoed through the dark mansion. "Dante." When the lights returned, Dante Marino found an old family ring placed on the dining table. But beneath the ring was a photograph of a man everyone believed had died twenty years ago. On the back of the photograph was one sentence: "I never stopped watching."

The entire Marino estate went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that happens right before something breaks.

I stood beside Dante, staring into the darkness where the voice had come from.

"Who was that?"

Dante didn't answer.

His eyes were locked on the speakers.

His entire body had changed.

The calm, controlled man I knew was gone.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Not for himself.

For everyone around him.

"Lock every entrance."

His security team immediately moved.

"Nobody leaves."

The guards spread through the mansion.

Doors closed.

Phones rang.

Commands were whispered.

But Dante didn't move.

He kept looking at the speaker.

"Dante."

He finally looked at me.

"Go upstairs with my mother."

"No."

His expression hardened.

"Clara."

"I said no."

Everyone around us froze.

Nobody talked back to Dante.

But I wasn't talking to the mafia boss.

I was talking to the man who had sat beside my hospital bed.

The man who looked terrified when he thought I might die.

"I am already part of this."

His jaw tightened.

"I never wanted you to be."

"That stopped being your choice when someone shot me."

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Before he could answer, Rosa entered the room.

She looked pale.

But not surprised.

That scared me.

"Dante."

He turned.

"Mother."

Rosa looked toward the speaker.

"He came back."

Dante stared at her.

"You knew."

It wasn't a question.

Rosa lowered her eyes.

"I knew he survived."

The room changed.

Dante stepped back.

"You knew my brother was alive?"

I looked between them.

His brother.

The name on the envelope.

The person everyone believed was dead.

"Who is he?"

Nobody answered.

Then Dante said quietly:

"Adrian."

The name felt heavy.

"My older brother."

I looked at him.

"You never mentioned him."

"Because there was nothing to mention."

His voice became colder.

"He died."

Rosa closed her eyes.

"No."

Dante looked at her.

"Mother."

"No."

Her voice shook.

"He disappeared."

The difference between those two words changed everything.

Died meant an ending.

Disappeared meant a secret.

Dante walked toward the table where the ring had been placed.

His hands tightened.

"This is his."

I looked at the ring.

A black stone.

A silver band.

The same symbol from my father's belongings.

"The mark."

Dante nodded.

"My father used that symbol for people he trusted."

I looked at him.

"And your brother?"

Dante's face darkened.

"My brother used it for people he controlled."

The lights flickered.

Everyone looked upward.

Then a video appeared on the large screen in the living room.

No one touched anything.

It simply turned on.

A man appeared.

Older than Dante.

Similar eyes.

Similar features.

But colder.

He sat in a dark room.

Looking directly into the camera.

Looking directly at Dante.

"Twenty years."

His voice was calm.

"That's how long you all pretended I didn't exist."

Nobody spoke.

The man smiled slightly.

"Dante."

Dante stared at the screen.

"You should have asked better questions."

The video continued.

"You believed our father betrayed you."

Dante's expression changed.

"You believed your brother died because of him."

A pause.

"But the truth was much simpler."

The man's eyes moved slightly.

"He was protecting you."

My heart tightened.

Protecting him?

From what?

The video cut off.

The room remained frozen.

Then Dante turned toward Rosa.

"What did he mean?"

Rosa looked broken.

"I thought I could bury that part of our past."

"You lied to me."

"I protected you."

Dante laughed once.

But there was no humor.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

He looked around.

"Everyone protects me by lying to me."

I understood that feeling.

Because I felt the same way.

My entire life had become a collection of secrets other people thought I couldn't handle.

Then Dante's security chief returned.

"Boss."

Dante turned.

"What?"

"We found the access point."

"Where?"

The man hesitated.

Dante noticed.

"Where?"

"The old underground room."

The room became colder.

"What underground room?"

I looked at Dante.

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

"There is a room under this house?"

Dante looked away.

"My father built it."

"For what?"

"Protection."

I almost smiled.

Another secret.

Another thing nobody wanted me to know.

Dante grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going down there."

"I am coming with you."

"No."

"Dante."

He looked at me.

"This is about my father."

"And your father is the reason I am involved."

Neither of us moved.

Finally, Rosa spoke.

"Take her."

Dante looked shocked.

"Mother."

"She deserves the truth."

A few minutes later, we entered the hidden room beneath the estate.

The air smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Memories.

The walls were covered with documents.

Photographs.

Records.

My entire body froze when I saw one picture.

My father.

Standing beside Dante's brother.

Both of them younger.

Both of them smiling.

"What is this?"

Dante walked closer.

Then he saw something else.

A file with my name.

CLARA HUGHES.

My heart stopped.

"No."

Dante opened it.

Inside were medical records.

My father's notes.

Photos of me as a child.

Someone had been watching my life.

For years.

"Why would someone have this?"

Dante didn't answer.

Because he had found something.

A letter.

My name was written on the front.

His hands became tense.

"Clara."

I took it.

The handwriting was my father's.

I opened it.

The first line destroyed everything I believed.

My daughter, if you are reading this, it means Dante finally found the truth.

I kept reading.

I need you to understand something. I never left you.

My vision blurred.

The next sentence was worse.

The person who killed me is still inside the Marino family.

I looked up.

Dante was reading over my shoulder.

His face changed.

Because below my father's words...

there was another message.

Written in a different handwriting.

A message added later.

And Clara already knows the person responsible.

I felt my heartbeat stop.

"What does that mean?"

Dante looked at me.

Neither of us understood.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One new message.

A photo appeared.

It was taken inside the hidden room.

A photo of Dante and me standing there.

Taken only seconds ago.

Underneath it were four words:

Look behind you.

Dante slowly turned around.

May you like

The door behind us was already opening.

And someone whispered my name.
