Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden in My Father's Past

A photograph slipped from Dante Marino's hand onto my hospital blanket. "That was your father," he whispered. When I looked closer, I saw an old picture of my father standing beside a younger Rosa Marino. But on the back of the photograph was a date from twenty-seven years ago. My father had been part of the Marino family long before I knew.
I stared at the message on Dante's phone.
Your therapist knows the truth about her father's death.
The words were simple.
But they felt heavier than any bullet.
I looked at Dante.
Then at the screen.
Then back at him.
"Who sent that?"
Dante didn't answer.
That worried me more than the message itself.
Because Dante Marino was not a man who hesitated.
Not when someone threatened him.
Not when someone challenged him.
Not when someone tried to hurt his family.
But now...
he looked confused.
And that was something I had never seen before.
"Tell me what is happening."
He slowly locked his phone.
"I don't know."
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
Dante Marino always knew.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
His answer surprised me.
"I expect you to understand that someone has been hiding things from both of us."
The room became silent.
I looked down at my hands.
My father's name.
The photograph.
The message.
Everything connected to a part of my life I thought was finished.
My father was gone.
But somehow...
he was standing in the middle of everything.
"I need to leave."
Dante immediately shook his head.
"No."
"I need answers."
"And you will get them."
"Here?"
His expression hardened.
"Not alone."
I looked at him.
"You think someone is going to come after me?"
"I know someone already did."
That sentence stayed with me.
Because he was right.
Someone had aimed a weapon at Rosa.
Someone had expected me to be there.
Someone knew exactly what would happen.
And somehow...
they knew my father.
Two hours later, Dante arranged for me to be moved to a private room inside a secure section of the hospital.
It felt excessive.
But after everything that happened...
I stopped arguing.
Rosa came to see me before leaving.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Not because of her stroke.
Because of fear.
"Clara."
I smiled.
"You're worried."
She held my hand.
"I have lived long enough to know when ghosts return."
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
For a moment, Rosa looked toward Dante.
He was standing outside the room.
Watching us.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Your father was a good man."
I froze.
"You knew my father?"
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"Yes."
"How?"
She looked away.
"Dante doesn't know everything."
That sentence made my heart beat faster.
"What don't I know?"
Before she could answer, Dante entered.
Rosa immediately stopped talking.
I noticed.
Dante noticed too.
Nobody said anything.
But something passed between them.
A secret.
Later that evening, Dante brought me the photograph.
He placed it carefully on the table.
"I need you to tell me if you recognize anyone."
I picked it up.
The picture was old.
The colors had faded.
My father looked younger.
Maybe around my age now.
Standing beside him was Rosa.
But there were others.
Men wearing dark suits.
Men with serious expressions.
People who looked like they belonged to Dante's world.
Except my father.
He was smiling.
Not afraid.
Not uncomfortable.
Like he belonged there.
"I don't understand."
Dante watched me.
"Neither do I."
I turned the photograph over.
The handwriting on the back was old.
Faded.
But readable.
Rosa, I promised I would protect him. Even if he never knows why.
My fingers went cold.
"Protect who?"
Dante didn't answer.
Because he was looking at the same thing.
"Clara..."
His voice changed.
"What?"
He pointed at the bottom corner.
There was a small mark.
A symbol.
A black circle with a line through the middle.
I had seen it before.
On my father's old notebooks.
On a necklace he kept hidden.
On a box he never let me open.
My breathing stopped.
"My father had this."
Dante looked at me.
"You never told me."
"Because I didn't know it mattered."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Dante asked:
"Did your father ever mention the name Marino?"
I searched my memories.
Nothing.
Almost nothing.
Then one moment came back.
A night at the hospital.
The week before he died.
My father had grabbed my wrist.
His eyes were terrified.
"Clara..."
"What?"
"Promise me something."
"What?"
"Never trust the people who say they protect you."
At the time, I thought he was confused.
Now I wasn't sure.
Dante listened carefully.
"He said that?"
"Yes."
"Anything else?"
I hesitated.
Then I remembered.
"He said..."
I looked at Dante.
"He said if anything happened to him, I should find the woman who raised a son with a black ring."
Dante went completely still.
Because he knew exactly who that woman was.
"Rosa."
I nodded.
"But why would my father tell me to find your mother?"
Dante didn't answer.
Instead, he walked to the window.
For the first time since I met him...
he looked afraid.
"What aren't you telling me?"
He stayed silent.
"Dante."
Finally, he spoke.
"My mother wasn't just connected to your father."
I waited.
"Your father saved her life."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"Twenty-seven years ago."
He looked back at me.
"There was an attack."
"An attack?"
"Someone tried to kill my mother."
My heart raced.
"And my father stopped it?"
Dante nodded.
"Then he disappeared."
The room felt colder.
"My father never disappeared."
Dante looked at me.
"Clara..."
His voice softened.
"Your father told everyone he was dead."
I froze.
"What?"
"He changed his identity."
"No."
The word came out immediately.
"No. That's impossible."
"I wish it was."
I shook my head.
"My father died in front of me."
Dante didn't respond.
That scared me.
Because if he had proof...
everything I knew about my life was wrong.
A few minutes later, Dante left to meet his security team.
I stayed alone.
Looking at the photograph.
Looking at my father's face.
Trying to understand how the man who taught me honesty could have hidden something this huge.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something told me not to.
I answered.
"Hello?"
For several seconds...
nothing.
Then a voice.
Older.
Familiar.
A voice I had not heard in eleven months.
My entire body froze.
"Clara."
I couldn't breathe.
Because that voice belonged to someone who should never have been able to call me.
"Dad?"
Silence.
Then the voice whispered:
"Don't trust Dante Marino."
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
My hands shaking.
Because underneath the missed call notification...
May you like
a new message appeared.
I am inside the Marino estate.
