Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the Contract

Dante stared at the photograph.

“Isabella.”

Clara watched his face.

Not guilt.

Grief.

“Who was she?”

“My cousin.”

Elena sat.

“My father's niece.”

Clara looked between them.

“And Julian's wife?”

Dante nodded.

“She disappeared eight years ago.”

“Dead?”

“We assumed.”

Elena whispered, “Maybe we shouldn't have.”

Clara almost laughed at the recurring theme.

Instead she examined the photograph.

Isabella Valenti.

Julian Vale.

Dante Moretti.

Adrian Vale.

Four people standing at a charity event.

Young.

Smiling.

Before everything went wrong.

“What happened?”

Dante answered.

“Isabella discovered Julian was moving money through Valenti companies.”

“And?”

“She came to me.”

Clara understood the message now.

“The last woman who thought you'd choose her over the empire.”

Dante's jaw tightened.

“I told her I needed evidence.”

“You didn't believe her.”

“I believed her. I didn't move fast enough.”

Three days later, Isabella disappeared.

Her car was found near the Hudson.

No body.

Clara looked at the photograph.

“Julian wants you to feel responsible.”

“I am responsible.”

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

“You made a bad decision. That's different.”

His eyes held hers.

Nobody had apparently told him that before.

Elena turned the photograph over.

Writing covered the back.

A series of account numbers.

Clara recognized one.

Valmont.

“Where did you get this?”

“In my father's things.”

They contacted Vittorio.

He admitted Isabella had given him the photograph shortly before disappearing.

He had hidden it because he feared Julian.

Clara's anger rose.

“You let your daughter marry into the same structure because you were afraid?”

Vittorio looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Elena left the room.

Clara followed.

She found her near the windows.

“I spent my whole life thinking my father controlled everything,” Elena whispered.

“Maybe he wanted you to think that.”

“Why?”

“Because admitting fear is harder.”

Elena laughed sadly.

“You sound like you understand him.”

“I understand fear disguised as competence.”

Elena looked at her.

“So does Dante.”

Clara ignored the implication.

They returned to the records.

The account numbers led to a company registered in Panama.

Director: Isabella Vale.

Active.

Clara stared.

“If she's alive—”

“She may control the original trust shares,” Dante said.

They found an address.

Boston.

Dante wanted security.

Clara insisted on discretion.

They traveled together.

The address belonged to a small accounting office.

Clara entered first.

A woman sat behind a desk.

Older than the photograph.

Same eyes.

“Isabella?”

The woman froze.

Then she looked past Clara toward Dante.

Tears appeared instantly.

“Dante.”

He stopped.

For once, the powerful man had no words.

Isabella stood.

“You took long enough.”

Dante crossed the room and hugged her.

Clara looked away.

Later, Isabella told them everything.

Julian had not merely built Valmont's takeover.

He had inherited it from Alexander.

She discovered it after their marriage.

When she tried to expose him, Julian threatened her family.

Vincenzo helped her disappear.

That was why Julian killed him.

Dante's voice broke slightly.

“My father knew you were alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“To protect you.”

Dante looked bitter.

“Everyone seems very fond of that excuse.”

Clara understood.

So did she.

Isabella produced records.

Enough to prove fraud.

Enough to invalidate portions of Valmont.

Not enough to identify Julian's remaining allies.

“There is one person you still haven't found,” Isabella said.

“Who?”

“The trustee.”

Clara frowned.

“Valmont has a human trustee?”

“Always.”

“Name?”

Isabella shook her head.

“Vincenzo hid it.”

“Why?”

“Because the trustee can dissolve the entire structure.”

Dante leaned forward.

“So Julian is looking for them too.”

“Yes.”

Clara asked, “What identifies the trustee?”

Isabella opened a safe.

Inside was a red envelope.

Clara's name was written across it.

She stared.

“No.”

Isabella handed it to her.

“Vincenzo left this.”

Clara opened it.

A letter.

Clara,

If you are reading this, Daniel failed to keep you outside our world.

I'm sorry.

Your grandfather created the third key because he believed accountants were more trustworthy than kings.

He may have been right.

The trustee is someone you already know.

Clara read faster.

The final paragraph had been cut away.

Physically removed.

“Who did this?”

Isabella shook her head.

“It arrived that way.”

Clara turned the envelope over.

Something was embossed inside the flap.

Initials.

M.B.

Her heart stopped.

Dante noticed.

“What?”

Clara knew those initials.

There was only one person in her life who used them.

Margaret Bennett.

Her mother.

Before she could speak, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Clara answered.

“Hello?”

Her mother's voice whispered through the line.

“Clara, don't come home.”

Clara stood.

“Mom?”

“I should have told you years ago.”

“Tell me what?”

A sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Margaret gasped.

Then a man's voice spoke in the background.

“Hello, Margaret.”

May you like

Clara recognized Julian.

The call ended.
