Chapter 2 - The Bride Who Arrived Seven Minutes Late

The door opened.

Thomas Reed walked in.

Clara forgot how to breathe.

Her managing director looked exactly as he had that morning: gray suit, silver tie, expensive watch, calm face.

Only now two Moretti guards stood behind him.

“Thomas?”

He looked at Clara.

“I'm sorry.”

Dante's voice was quiet.

“Start talking.”

Thomas glanced toward Elena.

Her expression revealed nothing.

That frightened Clara more than panic would have.

Thomas stepped toward the table.

“I was hired to conduct an independent financial review.”

“By whom?” Clara asked.

“I don't know.”

“Try again.”

“I genuinely don't know.”

Dante moved closer.

Thomas swallowed.

“The engagement agreement was delivered to our firm anonymously eight months ago. We were paid to identify structural risks without contacting either family.”

Clara stared.

“You reviewed this?”

“No. A sealed team did.”

“Then why me?”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Because three months ago the client changed the assignment.”

Dante's eyes narrowed.

“How?”

“They asked us to identify an analyst who could recognize the structure independently.”

Clara understood before he finished.

“You chose me.”

“Yes.”

“Then sent my personnel file?”

“No.”

“Thomas.”

“I swear.”

Clara's voice dropped.

“You told me to wear red.”

His face tightened.

“That instruction came from the client.”

“And you obeyed it?”

“I thought it was a recognition protocol.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“You dressed me as another man's arranged bride and sent me into a room with armed security as a recognition protocol?”

“I didn't know about the marriage.”

Elena finally spoke.

“Convenient.”

Thomas looked at her.

“You're Elena Valenti?”

She did not answer.

Recognition moved across his face.

Then fear.

“You shouldn't be here.”

Dante's head turned.

“What?”

Thomas stepped backward.

“I was told the Valenti daughter would not attend.”

Elena went pale.

Clara caught it.

“Who told you?”

Thomas looked toward the door.

“Someone using Moretti Holdings credentials.”

Dante's patience ended.

“Name.”

“I never got one.”

Marcus handed Dante a phone.

“We traced the authorization.”

Dante looked at the screen.

His expression hardened.

Clara watched him.

“Who?”

Dante raised his eyes.

“My chief financial officer.”

Clara felt the puzzle rearrange itself.

“Your CFO wanted me here.”

“Apparently.”

Elena grabbed her purse.

“I've had enough.”

Clara blocked her this time.

Elena stared at her.

“Move.”

“No.”

“You have no idea who you're dealing with.”

“That's becoming a recurring theme tonight.”

Elena's eyes flashed.

Clara held up the dead tablet.

“But you knew about Valmont.”

“I knew the name.”

“You lied.”

“I was protecting my family.”

“From what?”

Elena looked at Dante.

“Ask him what happened to the last family that tried to break an agreement with the Morettis.”

The room changed.

Clara looked at Dante.

He did not deny it.

“Dante?”

“This isn't relevant.”

“That's usually what powerful men say right before something becomes extremely relevant.”

His jaw tightened.

Thomas interrupted.

“There is something else.”

Everyone looked at him.

He removed a flash drive from his pocket.

“The anonymous client required me to give Clara this if she found Schedule K.”

Clara stared at it.

“You've had that all night?”

“Yes.”

“And you waited?”

“I was told not to deliver it unless she identified the control mechanism herself.”

Clara wanted to throw something.

Instead she held out her hand.

Thomas gave her the drive.

Dante stopped her before she could connect it.

“Security first.”

Marcus took it.

Elena suddenly moved.

Not toward the exit.

Toward Marcus.

Dante caught her wrist.

The motion was fast.

Controlled.

Elena froze.

Everyone else did too.

Dante looked down at her.

“Why do you want that drive?”

“I don't.”

“You moved for it.”

“I was leaving.”

“The door is behind you.”

For the first time, Elena looked frightened.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Frightened.

“Dante, please.”

Clara watched them.

“What is on it?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

Clara said, “You're lying again.”

Elena looked at her.

And something in her finally broke.

“You think you're clever because you found a clause?”

“No. I think I'm clever because people have been paying me to find clauses for eleven years.”

“You don't understand these families.”

“Then explain them.”

Elena laughed without humor.

“You think this marriage was my choice?”

Dante released her wrist.

Elena rubbed it.

“My father told me six months ago that I would marry Dante.”

Clara looked at Dante.

“And you agreed?”

“My father is dead,” Dante said. “The arrangement predates his death.”

“You still agreed.”

“For business reasons.”

Clara shook her head.

“Romantic.”

Elena's eyes filled unexpectedly.

“If I refused, my brother lost everything.”

Silence.

Dante frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“My brother's company is collateral.”

“For what?”

“I don't know.”

Dante stared at her.

Elena whispered, “That's the point. None of us knows everything.”

Marcus returned with a laptop.

“The drive is clean.”

He placed it on the table.

Clara inserted the drive.

One folder.

VALMONT.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank transfers.

Corporate charts.

And one video.

Clara opened it.

An older man appeared.

Dante went rigid.

“Father.”

The recording was dated eleven months earlier.

Vincenzo Moretti looked tired.

Older than the photographs Clara had seen in financial publications.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If Dante is watching this, then I failed.”

Dante did not move.

Vincenzo continued.

“The Valenti marriage is not an alliance. It is an acquisition.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Clara felt goose bumps rise along her arms.

“The trust was created twenty-two years ago. I believed I controlled it. I was wrong.”

Dante leaned toward the screen.

Vincenzo coughed.

“Someone inside both families has been consolidating voting rights through marriages, guarantees, and inheritance instruments. Dante, if you marry under the agreement as written, you will surrender enough proxy authority to lose Moretti Holdings within ninety days.”

Dante's face became stone.

Vincenzo looked away from the camera.

Then back.

“I tried to identify the beneficiary.”

The video distorted.

Clara leaned closer.

Vincenzo said one final sentence before the screen froze.

“The beneficiary is not a Valenti.”

Black screen.

Everyone stared.

Clara checked the file.

“That can't be the end.”

Marcus examined it.

“Corrupted.”

“No,” Clara said.

“What?”

She pointed at the file size.

“The video is twenty-three minutes.”

They had watched two.

Dante looked at her.

“Recover it.”

“I'll need proper equipment.”

“You'll have it.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

His eyebrows lowered.

“No?”

“I am not going anywhere with you.”

“Someone has your personnel file.”

“Which is precisely why I'm going to the police.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“The police.”

Clara looked at her.

“What?”

“You still think this is a normal corporate crime.”

“And you think I'm going to hide in a fortress with strangers?”

Dante said, “My home has security.”

“I'm sure your dungeon has excellent Wi-Fi too.”

Thomas nearly smiled.

Dante didn't.

Clara grabbed her bag.

“I'll send everything to federal regulators.”

“You don't have everything.”

“I have enough.”

Dante stepped closer.

“No. You have enough to make whoever designed this realize you are dangerous.”

Clara stopped.

She hated that he was right.

He lowered his voice.

“You were selected before tonight. They knew your address. Your family. Your finances.”

Clara's stomach tightened.

“My mother.”

She grabbed her phone.

No signal.

“Why don't I have service?”

Marcus checked his.

“Jammer.”

Dante's head snapped toward the windows.

“Not ours.”

The guards moved instantly.

Marcus spoke into his radio.

No response.

Then the lights went out.

Elena gasped.

Emergency lighting flooded the room red.

Clara heard the lock click.

Dante pulled her behind him.

A crash came from the corridor.

Then another.

Marcus drew his weapon.

Thomas backed toward the wall.

Clara's heart hammered.

“Tell me this is normal billionaire dating etiquette.”

Dante glanced at her.

“Stay behind me.”

The door handle moved.

Marcus aimed.

The door opened.

A Moretti guard staggered inside.

Blood stained his white shirt.

“Sir…”

Dante caught him.

“What happened?”

“Security room.”

“Who?”

The guard struggled to breathe.

“They knew the codes.”

Marcus cursed.

Dante looked toward Clara.

Inside access.

Again.

The wounded guard grabbed Dante's sleeve.

“Don't go downstairs.”

“Why?”

“They're not here for you.”

His eyes moved toward Clara.

“They came for her.”

A sound came from Clara's tablet.

The supposedly dead screen illuminated.

A live video appeared.

Clara recognized the kitchen in her mother's house.

Her mother was sitting at the table.

Someone stood behind her.

Only a black-gloved hand was visible.

Clara stopped breathing.

Text appeared beneath the image.

BRING CLARA BENNETT TO THE ADDRESS BELOW.

Dante read it.

Then another line appeared.

COME ALONE, OR HER MOTHER LEARNS WHAT HER DAUGHTER FOUND.

Clara reached for the tablet.

The video zoomed closer to her mother's face.

Then the person behind her leaned into frame.

Clara recognized him.

Her voice disappeared.

Dante looked at her.

“Who is that?”

May you like

Clara whispered the name.

“My father.”
