Chapter 11 - The Bride Was Never the Prize

Clara laughed.
Nobody else did.
Her laughter stopped.
“You're serious.”
Marcus sent the document.
Dante opened it.
There it was.
A contingency marriage agreement.
Dante Moretti.
Clara Bennett.
Unsigned by both.
Prepared eleven years ago.
Clara felt sick.
“I was twenty-one.”
Dante stared at the date.
“I was twenty-six.”
Daniel arrived.
One look at the document told Clara he knew.
She nearly screamed.
“You knew this too?”
“No.”
“Your face says otherwise.”
“I knew Vincenzo considered a Bennett alliance.”
“Alliance?”
Clara pointed at herself.
“I'm a person.”
“I know.”
“Apparently nobody else did.”
Dante looked furious.
“Why Clara?”
Daniel explained.
The three families originally intended Valmont's keys to remain separate.
Alexander corrupted the system by using marriages to consolidate them.
Vincenzo considered reversing the strategy.
A Moretti-Bennett marriage would place two keys together outside Valenti control.
“But he never proposed it,” Daniel said. “He realized it would repeat Alexander's mistake—using children as corporate instruments.”
Clara looked at Dante.
His father had stopped.
Julian had not.
The arranged marriage with Elena was a decoy.
The real objective was Clara.
Julian needed Dante to trust her, perhaps desire her, perhaps marry her.
Then Valmont could consolidate through them.
Clara sat slowly.
“Our meeting wasn't only about making me find Schedule K.”
“No,” Dante said.
“They wanted us together.”
The realization felt violating.
Every genuine moment suddenly had a shadow behind it.
The kiss.
The trust.
The almost-date.
Dante saw her withdraw.
“Clara.”
“I need space.”
“Don't let them turn this into something it wasn't.”
“How do I know what it was?”
“Because I do.”
She looked at him.
He spoke quietly.
“I didn't know that document existed.”
“I believe you.”
“Then what?”
“I don't know whether I trust myself.”
That hurt him.
She saw it.
But she could not fix it.
Not yet.
The next night Clara used Thomas's key card.
It opened a private archive beneath an old Manhattan bank.
She went alone visibly.
Marcus followed invisibly.
Dante hated the plan.
That helped convince Thomas.
Inside, Julian waited.
Thomas stood beside him.
Rows of filing cabinets filled the underground room.
Julian smiled.
“Welcome to Valmont.”
Clara looked around.
“This is it?”
“The real history.”
“Where's my mother?”
“Safe.”
“Dante?”
“Preparing to marry Elena.”
Clara pretended bitterness.
“You were right.”
Julian studied her.
“About?”
“He chose the empire.”
Thomas smiled.
Clara wanted to slap him.
Instead she said, “So what do you want?”
Julian placed a contract before her.
“Not your signature.”
She frowned.
“Then?”
“Dante's.”
Clara understood.
“You want me to bring it to him.”
“He trusts you.”
“And if I refuse?”
Julian smiled.
“You won't.”
He opened a file.
Photographs of Clara and Dante.
Dozens.
Hotel.
Office.
Boston.
Moretti Tower.
Everywhere.
Then he showed her a photograph taken inside Dante's bedroom.
Clara stared.
Someone had access to his private home.
Julian leaned closer.
“The person closest to Dante works for me.”
Clara remained calm.
“Who?”
“You'll discover that soon.”
She slipped a tracker beneath the desk.
Marcus would have the location.
Then alarms sounded.
Julian looked up.
Thomas panicked.
“What is that?”
Clara smiled.
“That would be me refusing.”
Marcus's team entered.
Thomas surrendered instantly.
Julian ran.
Clara followed despite orders.
He disappeared into an underground corridor.
She reached a steel door.
It was ajar.
Inside was a control room.
Monitors showed Moretti properties.
One showed Dante's home.
Another showed Elena.
Another showed Margaret.
Then Clara saw a live feed from Moretti Tower.
Dante was standing in his office.
Behind him was Marcus.
Clara froze.
Julian's words returned.
The person closest to Dante works for me.
On screen, Marcus reached inside his jacket.
Clara grabbed her phone.
No signal underground.
She ran toward the stairs.
On the monitor, Marcus stepped closer to Dante.
His hand came out.
He was holding something.
May you like
Clara could not see what it was.
Then Dante turned around.
