Chapter 5 - The Company That Did Not Exist

Adrian Vale came down the stairs with empty hands.

Dante aimed a gun at him.

Adrian smiled.

“I hoped we could avoid theatrics.”

Clara stared at him.

“You engineered the meeting.”

“Yes.”

“You sent me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Dante's lawyers were useless.”

Dante's expression did not change.

“You have ten seconds.”

Adrian looked at him.

“My father built Valmont with yours.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Alexander corrupted it.”

“My father improved it.”

“By stealing?”

“By creating leverage.”

Clara stepped forward.

“Why me?”

Adrian's eyes settled on her.

“Because Daniel taught you better than he realizes.”

Her father stiffened.

Adrian continued.

“You see structures. Weaknesses. Incentives. You don't care who owns the room.”

“That still doesn't explain why you needed me.”

“I needed Dante to distrust the contract.”

Dante's gun remained steady.

“Why?”

“Because the people behind Valmont expected you to sign.”

Clara frowned.

“You're not behind it?”

Adrian laughed.

“I wish.”

Everything shifted again.

“Then who is?”

“My brother.”

Silence.

Dante lowered the gun an inch.

“Name.”

Adrian's smile vanished.

“Julian Vale.”

Daniel looked sick.

Clara noticed.

“You know him.”

Daniel nodded.

“I thought he died.”

Adrian said, “Everyone in this story seems to have that problem.”

Clara almost admired the line.

Almost.

Adrian placed a flash drive on the table.

“Julian controls Argentum, Bellaforte, and enough hidden Valmont proxies to take Moretti Holdings.”

“Why stop him?” Dante asked.

“Because he intends to kill everyone after he does.”

Elena whispered, “Including you?”

“Especially me.”

Adrian explained.

Alexander Vale had raised two sons differently.

Adrian learned finance.

Julian learned power.

When Alexander died, Julian inherited the secret network.

Adrian inherited the legitimate career.

For years, Julian had used him.

Credentials.

Information.

Access.

Then Vincenzo discovered the truth.

“He asked me for help,” Adrian said.

Dante's voice hardened.

“And you failed.”

“Yes.”

The honesty silenced him.

Adrian looked at Clara.

“I arranged tonight because I needed someone outside the families to see the structure before Julian could erase it.”

“You could have emailed me.”

“He would have intercepted it.”

“You could have called regulators.”

“He owns people there.”

“Police?”

“Some.”

Clara folded her arms.

“And your brilliant alternative was accidental arranged-bride cosplay?”

Adrian almost smiled.

“It worked.”

She hated that.

Dante asked, “What happens next?”

Adrian looked at his watch.

“Bellaforte's board votes at nine.”

“On what?”

“Accelerated closing.”

Clara checked the time.

1:17 a.m.

They had less than eight hours.

“If they close,” Adrian continued, “the debt trigger activates.”

Dante said, “Then we stop the vote.”

“You can't.”

“Watch me.”

“Julian controls the board.”

Clara opened the Bellaforte documents.

“Not necessarily.”

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed to a provision.

“Independent valuation condition.”

Adrian frowned.

“What about it?”

“They need a fairness opinion.”

“They have one.”

“From whom?”

“Sterling Mercer.”

Clara smiled.

“No, they don't.”

Dante looked at her.

“Why?”

“Sterling Mercer lost its infrastructure certification last month after a conflict review.”

Adrian stared.

“How do you know that?”

“I read boring things for money.”

If the fairness opinion was invalid, the closing could be challenged.

Not stopped forever.

But delayed.

They needed time.

Dante made calls.

Lawyers woke.

Board members woke.

By three in the morning, the transaction was frozen pending review.

For the first time all night, Clara breathed.

Then Adrian's phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His face drained.

“What?”

He handed it to Dante.

A photograph.

Vittorio Valenti tied to a chair.

Elena gasped.

Text beneath it:

9:00. SIGN OR HE DIES.

Elena grabbed the phone.

“No.”

Dante looked at Adrian.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Clara studied the photograph.

Concrete wall.

Industrial light.

A logo partly visible behind Vittorio.

She enlarged it.

Three letters.

BFT.

“Bellaforte.”

Adrian nodded.

“They have an old logistics facility.”

Dante was already moving.

Clara stopped him.

“This is what Julian wants.”

“He has Elena's father.”

“And he wants you emotional.”

Dante looked at her.

“So I do nothing?”

“No.”

She picked up the acquisition documents.

“We make him think he's winning.”

At 8:43 a.m., Dante entered Bellaforte's Manhattan headquarters.

Elena accompanied him.

Adrian stayed hidden.

Daniel and Margaret were moved to a secure location.

Clara entered as Dante's financial adviser.

It was the first accurate role anyone had assigned her all night.

The board assembled.

At 8:59, a screen activated.

Julian Vale appeared.

He looked nothing like Adrian.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Calm.

“Dante.”

“Where is Vittorio?”

“Alive.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Let me speak to him.”

“In time.”

Julian noticed Clara.

His smile widened.

“Ms. Bennett.”

Clara felt cold.

“You've caused considerable inconvenience.”

“It's one of my better professional skills.”

“I chose you well.”

She frowned.

“You?”

Adrian had said he chose her.

Julian leaned closer to the camera.

“Did my brother tell you this was his plan?”

Dante looked at Clara.

She remained still.

Julian laughed softly.

“Adrian didn't select you. I did.”

Clara's pulse jumped.

“Why?”

“Because your father stole something from me nine years ago.”

Daniel.

“What?”

“A company.”

Clara shook her head.

“My father didn't own companies.”

Julian smiled.

“No. You do.”

The boardroom went silent.

Clara stared.

Julian continued.

“A company you've never heard of owns eleven percent of Valmont's voting rights.”

He paused.

“And you inherited it when Daniel Bennett legally died.”

Clara could not speak.

“That is why we needed you here.”

Dante turned toward her.

Julian's smile disappeared.

“Your signature is the final key.”

A document slid from the printer behind Clara.

Nobody had touched it.

One page.

One signature line.

CLARA BENNETT.

May you like

Then the boardroom doors locked.

And Julian said, “Sign it, Clara, or Elena watches her father die.”
