Chapter 12 - The Night the Empire Turned Against Him

Clara reached street level and called Dante.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
She called Elena.
“Get to Dante.”
“What happened?”
“Now.”
Clara and two guards raced toward Moretti Tower.
When they arrived, Marcus met them downstairs.
Clara stopped.
He was alive.
Dante was alive.
“What were you holding?”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
“In Dante's office.”
He pulled out a flash drive.
“This.”
Clara exhaled.
Julian had manipulated her again.
Or had he?
“Where did you get it?”
Marcus hesitated.
That was enough.
Dante appeared.
“Marcus.”
The guard looked at him.
“Tell her.”
Marcus admitted his father had worked for Alexander Vale.
Clara stiffened.
“But I don't work for Julian.”
“Prove it.”
Marcus handed her the drive.
Records showed payments from Julian.
To Marcus.
Recent.
Dante's expression hardened.
Marcus shook his head.
“They're fabricated.”
Clara examined them.
Maybe.
Then she found a routing error.
Julian had used a bank identifier retired three years earlier.
Fake.
“Marcus is clean.”
Dante nodded.
He had trusted him.
Clara wished she still trusted that easily.
At nine the next morning, the Moretti board met.
Julian launched his final attack.
Valmont proxies claimed majority control.
Banks froze credit.
Suppliers suspended contracts.
News channels reported Dante's expected removal.
For three hours, the empire seemed to collapse.
Dante sat beside Clara.
He did not panic.
“What do we have?”
Clara looked at Margaret.
“Three keys.”
Margaret nodded.
They filed the dissolution.
Julian challenged it immediately.
Then Elena produced Isabella.
Alive.
Her testimony established coercion.
Daniel produced Sofia's evidence.
Adrian, recovering from surgery, testified remotely.
Thomas Reed accepted a cooperation deal.
Piece by piece, Valmont's structure broke.
At 2:17 p.m., a judge issued an emergency order suspending its voting authority.
Dante retained control.
But Julian was still missing.
Clara knew he would not stop.
Then her phone rang.
Julian.
She answered.
“You lost.”
He laughed.
“No, Clara. Dante lost.”
“What did you do?”
“Ask him about Bellaforte.”
Clara looked at Dante.
He checked the markets.
Bellaforte had defaulted.
The cross-default spread automatically.
Moretti Holdings owed $480 million immediately.
Page forty-seven.
The original trap.
Even without Valmont, the debt remained.
Clara's stomach dropped.
Julian said, “By tomorrow morning, his empire belongs to the banks.”
The call ended.
Everyone looked at Clara.
She smiled.
Dante frowned.
“Why are you smiling?”
“Because Julian just made a mistake.”
“What?”
“He thinks the debt is real.”
Clara had spent days examining Bellaforte.
She had found something everyone missed.
The loan proceeds had never fully funded.
Only $312 million had transferred.
The remaining amount existed as circular accounting entries between shell entities.
Fraudulent consideration.
If proven, the guarantee could be void.
They worked through the night.
At 4:40 a.m., Clara found the final transfer.
Money left Moretti.
Entered Bellaforte.
Moved through Argentum.
Then returned to an account.
She stared at the beneficiary.
Dante.
Or apparently Dante.
The account had been opened using his identity.
“This was supposed to make you look like the fraudster.”
Dante leaned over her.
“Can we prove it?”
“Yes.”
She traced the opening documents.
A forged signature.
A surveillance photograph from the bank.
The man opening the account wore a cap.
Clara enlarged the image.
Not Julian.
Thomas.
They had him.
By sunrise, federal investigators froze the fraudulent accounts.
The debt enforcement stopped.
Moretti Holdings survived.
Dante looked at Clara across the conference table.
Exhausted.
Unshaven.
Smiling.
“You saved my company.”
Clara shook her head.
“We saved it.”
Then Marcus entered.
His expression erased the relief.
“Julian has Elena.”
Dante stood.
“What?”
“She disappeared twenty minutes ago.”
Clara's phone buzzed.
A photograph arrived.
Elena in her red dress.
Tied to the chair where Vittorio had been held.
Underneath were five words.
BRING ME THE THREE KEYS.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
COME TO WHERE THE WEDDING BEGAN.
