Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind My Husband’s Perfect Image

"Who helped her?"

Daniel's voice echoed from the bottom of the staircase.

I stood frozen.

One step above the hallway.

One step away from being seen.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Victoria spoke.

"Daniel."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Don't make a scene."

I slowly stepped backward.

My heart was beating so loudly that I was sure they could hear it.

Someone inside the house had helped Emily.

Someone inside the house had been watching.

And now Daniel knew there was a leak.

I returned to the bedroom before they could see me.

I closed the door quietly.

Then I locked it.

For the first time since I entered this mansion, I locked a door between me and my husband.

That small action felt bigger than it should have.

Because before today, I never thought I would need protection from Daniel.

I sat on the floor beside my suitcase.

My wedding ring caught the light from the chandelier.

A beautiful symbol.

A beautiful lie.

I twisted it around my finger.

Two days ago, I had looked at this ring and thought I had found my forever.

Now I wondered if Daniel had looked at the same ring and seen a contract.

A transaction.

A way to gain something from me.

My phone vibrated.

I expected Emily.

Instead, it was a message from Daniel.

"Come downstairs. We need to talk."

I stared at it.

Before today, I would have gone immediately.

I would have worried about his feelings.

I would have tried to fix whatever was wrong.

But that woman was gone.

The woman who believed love meant giving someone unlimited chances.

I typed one word.

"No."

Three seconds later, another message arrived.

"Don't make this worse."

I looked at the screen.

There it was.

The threat hidden inside polite words.

I didn't answer.

A minute passed.

Then five.

Then ten.

The house became silent.

Too silent.

I knew Daniel.

At least, I thought I did.

When he couldn't control a situation, he didn't explode.

He planned.

And that was more dangerous.

I stood up and walked toward the hidden camera.

I removed it carefully from the wall.

Behind it was a small black wire.

The wire disappeared into the wall.

This wasn't something someone installed overnight.

This had been here for a long time.

Maybe before I arrived.

Maybe before the wedding.

I took pictures.

Then I searched the room again.

This time, I wasn't looking for cameras.

I was looking for secrets.

The bedroom had always seemed romantic.

The large windows.

The expensive furniture.

The photographs of us together.

But now I noticed things I ignored before.

The locked drawer on Daniel's desk.

The second phone charger hidden behind his nightstand.

The documents inside his closet.

I walked toward the desk.

The drawer was locked.

I tried the handle.

Nothing.

I looked around.

Then I remembered something.

Daniel always kept his keys inside his watch box.

He thought it was clever.

He thought nobody knew.

I opened it.

The key was there.

My hands became cold.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I finally understood something.

Daniel had never hidden things because he was careful.

He hid things because he believed nobody would ever look.

I unlocked the drawer.

Inside were files.

Multiple folders.

Property records.

Financial documents.

Legal papers.

And one folder with my name.

My breath stopped.

I pulled it out.

The cover had my full name.

Not my married name.

My birth name.

The same name I had used before Daniel.

I opened it.

The first page was a background report.

My education.

My job.

My family.

My father's name.

My stomach tightened.

This wasn't a love story.

It was research.

Someone had investigated me.

Someone had studied my life.

I turned the pages.

The more I read, the worse it became.

Daniel knew about my savings before our first date.

He knew about my inheritance.

He knew about my father's company.

A company I barely remembered because it had been sold after his death.

But there was something else.

A note attached to the file.

Handwritten.

Not Daniel's handwriting.

Victoria's.

"She is the right one."

I stopped.

The right one.

For what?

I continued reading.

The next page contained a timeline.

The day Daniel met me.

The places I visited.

The conversations we had.

Every important moment.

Every personal detail.

My entire relationship had been documented.

My hands started shaking.

I wasn't his wife.

I was a target.

I heard footsteps outside.

I quickly closed the folder.

The bedroom door handle moved.

I grabbed the file and hid behind the curtains.

The door opened.

Daniel entered.

He wasn't alone.

Victoria followed.

They didn't know I was there.

"She is smarter than we expected," Victoria said.

Daniel closed the door.

"She found the camera."

My heart stopped.

"You should have removed it before the wedding."

"You told me she would be easier to control."

Victoria sighed.

"I said she was emotional. I didn't say she was stupid."

I held my breath.

Daniel walked toward the desk.

"Emily contacted her."

"How?"

"We're finding out."

Victoria looked around the room.

"Where is the file?"

Silence.

Daniel looked at the drawer.

"It's gone."

My heart jumped.

They knew.

"Then she knows," Victoria whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

"What happens now?"

A long pause.

Then Daniel said:

"Now we stop pretending."

I felt a chill.

Victoria lowered her voice.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

Daniel laughed quietly.

"She already knows too much."

I slowly moved my hand toward my phone.

I needed to record this.

I needed proof.

But before I could press the button, Daniel spoke again.

And his next words changed everything.

"She has no idea what her father actually left behind."

My fingers froze.

My father.

Again.

Why was everyone connected to him?

Victoria stepped closer to Daniel.

"She doesn't even know about the account."

Account.

What account?

Daniel said:

"Once we get access, this will all be worth it."

I felt dizzy.

My father's account.

My marriage.

The lies.

The documents.

Everything.

It was all connected.

I waited until they left.

Then I came out from behind the curtain.

I didn't cry.

I didn't panic.

I simply opened the folder again.

Because now I knew.

The truth was inside.

And I was going to find it.

The last page was different.

It wasn't a report.

It was a letter.

The paper was old.

The handwriting looked familiar.

I stared at the first line.

My father's handwriting.

My hands began trembling.

The letter started with:

"My daughter, if you are reading this, it means Daniel found you before I could warn you."

I stopped breathing.

I turned the page.

May you like

And at the bottom was the sentence that made my blood run cold.

"Your husband was never looking for a wife."
