Chapter 4 - The Day I Stopped Being Their Victim

The first thing I did was turn around.
The second thing I did was stop being afraid.
Because Emily was right.
Someone was already inside.
I stood in the darkness of my bedroom, staring at the door handle.
It wasn't moving anymore.
Whoever was outside knew I was awake.
They knew I had heard them.
My phone was still in my hand.
Emily's message was still on the screen.
"He's already inside."
I slowly looked around the room.
The hidden camera near the bookshelf.
The locked door.
The silence.
Everything suddenly felt different.
This was no longer a bad marriage.
This was a carefully planned operation.
And I was the target.
I moved away from the door.
Quietly.
Carefully.
I grabbed my suitcase and pushed it against the bedroom wall.
Then I walked toward the bathroom.
Not because I planned to hide.
Because I needed something stronger than fear.
I needed proof.
If Daniel had been watching me, there had to be a reason.
People didn't install cameras because they loved someone.
They did it because they wanted control.
I closed the bathroom door.
Then I searched every corner.
Behind the mirror.
Inside the vents.
Under the shelves.
Nothing.
For a moment, I wondered if I was imagining things.
Then I remembered the camera.
The one I had actually seen.
My hands stopped shaking.
Because anger was replacing fear.
They thought I was helpless.
They thought I would cry.
They thought I would beg Daniel to love me again.
They had no idea who they had married.
Before Daniel, I had spent years building my own life.
I paid for my own apartment.
I built my own company.
I saved every dollar because I knew nobody would protect me better than myself.
Then Daniel came into my life.
He didn't make me stronger.
He convinced me I could finally relax.
That was my mistake.
I trusted him.
But trust was not weakness.
Trust was something people earned.
And Daniel had just lost it.
I returned to the bedroom.
The footsteps outside were gone.
Slowly, I opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
No Daniel.
No Victoria.
Nothing.
But on the floor outside my room was something that made my heart stop.
A small envelope.
No name.
No address.
Just my initials written on the front.
I picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
My wedding photograph.
But someone had drawn a red circle around Daniel.
And written one sentence underneath.
"He did the same thing to me."
I stared at the handwriting.
Emily.
It had to be Emily.
The message was clear.
Daniel had done this before.
The perfect husband.
The perfect family.
The perfect marriage.
It was all a pattern.
I grabbed my phone and called the number.
This time, someone answered.
A woman.
Her voice was quiet.
"Hello?"
I froze.
"Emily?"
There was a pause.
Then a shaky breath.
"You're his new wife."
It wasn't a question.
It was a fact.
"How do you know?"
"Because Daniel sent me a picture of you."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
"He wanted to show me that he had moved on."
Her voice cracked.
"But he didn't know I would recognize the signs."
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
"What signs?"
Silence.
Then Emily said something that made my blood run cold.
"The first morning after my wedding, Victoria gave me a cleaning rag."
I closed my eyes.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"She told me the same thing."
"What?"
"That I needed to learn my place."
Emily didn't answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was softer.
"Then you need to leave."
"I know."
"No."
Her tone changed.
"You don't understand."
I listened.
"Daniel doesn't marry women because he loves them."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Then why?"
"Because of what they have."
The words landed heavily.
"What do you mean?"
"Money. Property. Connections."
I looked toward my suitcase.
My savings.
My documents.
"The papers."
Emily went silent.
"You found them?"
"What papers?"
"Before Daniel married me, he made me sign documents."
My heart started racing.
"What kind of documents?"
"He told me they were normal marriage agreements."
I stood up.
"Are you saying they weren't?"
"I don't know everything."
Her voice became urgent.
"But I found out later that some pages were missing."
I remembered Daniel mentioning final papers.
The money transfer.
The plan.
My hands tightened into fists.
"Why didn't you leave?"
A long silence followed.
Then Emily answered.
"Because I tried."
My heart sank.
"What happened?"
"I found out too much."
The fear in her voice was real.
"Daniel didn't want me gone."
The room went silent.
"Emily..."
"I escaped."
She whispered.
"But before I did, I found something."
"What?"
"A file."
"What file?"
"About you."
I froze.
"About me?"
"Daniel already knew who you were before you met him."
The air disappeared from my lungs.
No.
That wasn't possible.
I met Daniel at a charity event.
At least, that's what I believed.
"He didn't meet you by chance," Emily said.
"He chose you."
I looked around the room.
The camera.
The documents.
The messages.
Everything connected.
"Why?"
Emily didn't answer.
And somehow, that scared me more.
"Emily?"
Finally, she spoke.
"Because your father left something behind."
I stopped breathing.
"My father?"
"You never told Daniel about him, did you?"
"No."
"Then how did he know?"
I had no answer.
Because I didn't know.
My father had passed away years ago.
He left me nothing except memories.
At least, that's what I thought.
"I need to meet you," I said.
"Not at the old Whitmore property."
I looked at my phone.
"Why not?"
"Because Daniel knows that's where I would send you."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Then where?"
Emily gave me an address.
A small coffee shop across town.
"Come alone."
"I will."
"And bring nothing connected to Daniel."
I looked at the suitcase.
"Why?"
"Because if he knows you're leaving..."
She stopped.
"Emily?"
Her voice dropped.
"Because women who try to leave Daniel don't always get a second chance."
The call ended.
I stood there for several seconds.
Then I made a decision.
I wasn't going to run.
Not yet.
Running would mean Daniel still controlled the situation.
I needed answers.
I needed to know why he chose me.
Why he lied.
Why my father was involved.
I opened my suitcase again.
I removed my passport.
My money.
My marriage certificate.
Then I placed one more thing inside.
The photograph Emily sent me.
I was halfway through changing clothes when I heard the front door downstairs open.
Voices.
Daniel.
Victoria.
Another man.
I moved toward the hallway.
I couldn't see them.
But I could hear.
"She knows too much," Victoria said.
My entire body froze.
Daniel answered.
"Not yet."
"Then why was Emily able to contact her?"
Silence.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Because someone inside this house helped her."
My heart stopped.
Someone inside this house.
I looked behind me.
The bedroom.
The hidden camera.
The messages.
Then I heard Victoria whisper:
"Find out who helped her before she discovers what we hid in her father's file."
I stepped back.
The hallway floor creaked.
The voices downstairs stopped.
May you like
A second later, Daniel slowly looked up toward the staircase.
And he said my name.
