Chapter 2 - The Secret I Hid Behind My Smile

The bedroom door opened before I could answer.
I stood completely still.
My phone was still in my hand.
The photo on the screen was still visible.
Daniel.
Standing outside a restaurant.
His arm around another woman.
Smiling the same way he had smiled at me two years ago.
The same smile.
The same eyes.
The same man.
But somehow, it felt like I was looking at a stranger.
"Are you okay?"
Daniel's voice came from behind the door.
I quickly turned my phone face down.
Then I looked at him.
The man who had just told me I was nothing more than a maid.
The man who had insulted me less than an hour after our wedding.
The man whose secret had just appeared on my screen.
"I'm fine," I said.
My voice surprised me.
It sounded calm.
Almost normal.
Daniel leaned against the doorway.
He studied my face.
For a moment, I wondered if he knew.
If he had seen the message.
If he knew someone had warned me.
But then he smiled.
That same arrogant smile.
"You know, I was worried you would overreact."
I almost laughed.
Overreact.
That word again.
"You embarrassed me in front of your mother," I said.
Daniel shrugged.
"I was teaching you."
"Teaching me?"
"Yes."
He walked into the room.
"You need to understand how things work here."
I watched him carefully.
Every movement.
Every expression.
Every lie.
Because that was what I finally understood.
Daniel wasn't angry because I had done something wrong.
He was angry because he thought I had forgotten my place.
"You married into my family," he continued. "That means you represent us."
I looked at him.
"And cleaning floors represents me?"
His jaw tightened.
For the first time, his calm expression cracked.
"You have always been stubborn."
There it was.
The real Daniel.
Not the charming man from the wedding.
Not the man who brought me flowers every Friday.
Not the man who told me I was the only person who understood him.
The real Daniel appeared when he realized he could no longer control the conversation.
"You know what your problem is?" he asked.
I said nothing.
"You think because you have a career and your own money, you are equal to everyone."
I slowly looked down at my suitcase.
My own money.
That phrase stayed in my mind.
Because Daniel knew exactly what he was doing.
He wasn't asking me to help.
He was trying to erase me.
To make me feel small.
To make me grateful for a life I had never asked for.
"I need some time alone," I said.
Daniel laughed quietly.
"Don't start acting like a victim."
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I wasn't afraid.
Because fear came from uncertainty.
And now I knew exactly who he was.
"Leave the room, Daniel."
The silence afterward was immediate.
His face changed.
Nobody talked to him that way.
Especially not his new wife.
Slowly, he smiled.
But there was no warmth in it.
"You're going to regret that."
He walked out.
The door closed.
I waited.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Then I grabbed my phone.
I opened the unknown message again.
The photo was still there.
Underneath it was another message.
"Check your wedding documents."
My heart started beating faster.
I looked at the marriage certificate inside my suitcase.
The one I had just packed.
Why would someone tell me to check it?
I pulled it out.
At first, everything looked normal.
My name.
Daniel's name.
The date.
The signatures.
Then I noticed something.
A small mark in the bottom corner.
A handwritten number.
I had never seen it before.
"317."
I stared at it.
I had no idea what it meant.
I turned the document over.
Nothing.
Just blank paper.
I looked back at the message.
"Check your wedding documents."
Someone knew something.
Someone knew what was hidden.
The question was…
Who?
I sat on the edge of the bed.
Two years of memories suddenly felt different.
Every romantic dinner.
Every conversation.
Every promise.
I started replaying everything.
The first time Daniel introduced me to Victoria.
The way she looked at me.
Not like a future daughter-in-law.
Like someone she was evaluating.
The questions she asked.
How much did I earn?
Did I own property?
Did I have family nearby?
At the time, I thought she was being curious.
Now I wondered if she was calculating.
My phone vibrated again.
Another message.
This time from the same unknown number.
"Daniel didn't marry you by accident."
I stopped breathing.
Another message appeared.
"He needed something from you."
I stared at the screen.
My hands became cold.
"What do you mean?" I whispered.
I typed a reply.
But before I could send it, the messages disappeared.
Deleted.
Every single one.
I tried calling the number.
Unavailable.
I checked the photo.
Gone.
Everything vanished.
Like it had never existed.
But I knew what I had seen.
And I knew someone was trying to warn me.
I put the phone down.
Then I heard voices downstairs.
Daniel.
And Victoria.
I slowly walked toward the bedroom door.
I opened it slightly.
Their voices traveled up the staircase.
"You should have waited," Victoria said.
"She was never supposed to find out this soon."
My entire body froze.
Daniel answered.
"She won't leave."
Victoria laughed softly.
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because women like her always think they can fix things."
My fingers tightened around the door handle.
Women like her.
I suddenly understood.
This wasn't about cleaning.
This wasn't about tradition.
This wasn't about family expectations.
This was planned.
A marriage.
A performance.
A trap.
I moved closer.
I needed to hear more.
"You promised me everything would be handled," Victoria said.
"It will be."
"And the money?"
My heart stopped.
The money.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Once she signs the final papers, everything will be transferred."
I covered my mouth.
Final papers.
Transferred.
My money?
My property?
What exactly had I married into?
I stepped backward.
The floor creaked.
The voices downstairs stopped.
Silence.
A terrifying silence.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Did you hear that?"
My heart raced.
I moved quickly back into the bedroom.
I closed the door.
Barely two seconds later, someone knocked.
"Open the door."
Daniel.
I didn't answer.
"Open the door, please."
His voice was different now.
Calmer.
More dangerous.
I looked at my suitcase.
My passport.
My documents.
My savings.
Everything suddenly felt more important.
I couldn't leave without knowing the truth.
But I couldn't stay without protecting myself.
Then my phone lit up again.
A new message appeared.
This time, it wasn't from an unknown number.
It was from someone saved in my contacts.
Someone I never expected.
The message contained only one sentence.
"Your husband has done this before."
I stared at the name above it.
May you like
And my blood turned cold.
Because the sender was Daniel's first wife.
