Chapter 3 - The Family That Bought My Silence

I stared at the name on my phone until the screen went dark.
Daniel’s first wife.
The woman everyone told me never existed.
The woman Daniel said had left him years ago.
The woman Victoria refused to talk about.
My hand trembled as I unlocked my phone again.
The message was still there.
"Your husband has done this before."
I pressed the contact name.
No profile picture.
No recent conversations.
Just a number.
A number saved under a name I had never added.
"Emily."
I whispered it.
The name felt familiar.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had heard it before.
Three months before my wedding, I had asked Daniel about a framed photograph I saw inside his office.
A woman standing beside him.
She looked happy.
Too happy.
I remembered pointing at it.
"Who is she?"
Daniel had looked uncomfortable for a second.
Then he smiled.
"Someone from my past."
I waited for more.
But he never gave it.
Later that night, Victoria casually mentioned the woman.
"Some people are not strong enough to survive being part of this family."
At the time, I thought she meant an ex-girlfriend.
Now I understood.
She meant Emily.
Daniel's first wife.
I heard another knock on my bedroom door.
"Open it."
Daniel again.
I quickly locked my phone.
I put it inside my pocket.
Then I opened the door.
Daniel stood there.
His expression had changed.
The anger was gone.
Now he looked concerned.
A performance.
A very convincing one.
"Are you okay?"
I looked at him.
The question almost made me laugh.
"I should be asking you that."
His eyebrows moved slightly.
"What does that mean?"
I studied his face.
Looking for cracks.
Looking for guilt.
Looking for anything.
But Daniel was good.
Very good.
"I got a strange message."
For half a second, something changed in his eyes.
Fear.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But I saw it.
Then it disappeared.
"What message?"
I didn't answer.
Instead, I watched him.
A normal husband would ask if I was okay.
A normal husband would ask who sent it.
A normal husband would be confused.
Daniel wasn't confused.
He was calculating.
"You need to stop letting people put ideas in your head," he said.
There it was.
The same pattern.
Not denial.
Not explanation.
Control.
"You know something about this," I said.
His face hardened.
"Careful."
One word.
A warning.
I had never heard him speak to me like that before.
"Who was Emily?"
The room became silent.
Daniel stopped moving.
Only for a moment.
But it was enough.
"Where did you hear that name?"
I almost smiled.
Because his reaction answered the question.
"She was real."
Daniel looked away.
"That was a long time ago."
"Your first wife?"
His jaw tightened.
"Who told you?"
I stepped back.
The man in front of me was no longer pretending.
"Why did you lie to me?"
"I didn't lie."
"You said your previous marriage ended because you both realized you wanted different things."
Daniel looked at me.
"That's true."
"Then why did she just message me?"
The silence was heavy.
For the first time since I met him, Daniel looked nervous.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Nervous.
That scared me more.
He walked into the room and closed the door behind him.
"Listen to me."
I immediately stepped away.
"No."
He stopped.
"You don't understand what you're getting involved in."
Those words sent a cold feeling through me.
"What I'm getting involved in?"
Daniel ran his hand through his hair.
"You think you know everything because someone sent you a message?"
"Someone who was married to you."
"Someone who is unstable."
There it was.
The easiest explanation.
The easiest weapon.
Make the other person look crazy.
I had seen people do it before.
But hearing Daniel use it made my stomach turn.
"Is that what you told everyone about her?"
His face changed.
"Don't do this."
"Did you tell everyone she was unstable?"
Daniel didn't answer.
And that was answer enough.
I picked up my phone.
"I want to talk to Emily."
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Too firmly.
I looked at him.
"Why?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Because she will destroy your life."
I stared at him.
"Or she will tell me the truth."
His expression became cold again.
"You really think I would do something like this?"
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Because he was still trying.
Still pretending.
But then I remembered the rag.
The insult.
The way his mother smiled.
The way they spoke downstairs.
The money.
The papers.
The plan.
"I don't know who you are anymore," I said.
Daniel looked hurt.
But I didn't believe it.
Not anymore.
He left the room without another word.
I waited until his footsteps disappeared.
Then I opened the message again.
I typed.
"Who are you?"
The response came immediately.
"I've been waiting for you to ask."
My heart raced.
Another message appeared.
"I know what Daniel and Victoria are planning."
I stared at the screen.
"What are they planning?"
A few seconds passed.
Then:
"Meet me."
I hesitated.
"Where?"
The answer came.
"At the old Whitmore property."
I knew that place.
Daniel had mentioned it once.
An abandoned house outside the city.
He said his family stopped using it years ago.
"Why there?"
The typing bubble appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
"Because that's where Daniel buried the truth."
I felt a chill.
Not because I believed every word.
But because something about it felt real.
I grabbed my coat.
Then I stopped.
Leaving immediately would be careless.
Daniel knew the house.
Victoria knew the house.
If Emily was telling the truth, they might know she contacted me.
I looked around the bedroom.
The perfect room.
The expensive furniture.
The life everyone thought I wanted.
Then I noticed something.
A small camera.
Hidden near the bookshelf.
My breath caught.
I walked closer.
It was tiny.
Almost invisible.
But it was there.
Watching.
Recording.
My entire body went cold.
I slowly looked around the room.
How long had it been there?
Since before the wedding?
Since before I moved in?
I took a picture of it with my phone.
Then I heard something.
A quiet sound.
From the hallway.
Someone was outside.
Listening.
I turned off the lights.
I moved silently toward the door.
The footsteps stopped.
Whoever was outside knew I had noticed.
My hand reached for the handle.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
From Emily.
Only four words.
"Don't open the door."
I froze.
May you like
Another message arrived.
"He's already inside."
