Chapter 7 - The Truth Hidden Behind Her Name

The old landline kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
The sound echoed through the penthouse.
One ring.
Then another.
Then another.
Elena stared at the screen of her phone.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
The name was impossible.
Claire stood beside her.
Her face had lost all color.
Richard looked terrified.
But Dominic...
Dominic looked like he had just seen a ghost.
Elena slowly turned toward him.
"You know that name."
Dominic didn't answer.
That was enough.
She walked toward the phone.
"Elena, don't."
Dominic's voice stopped her for half a second.
Not because she wanted to listen.
Because she had never heard fear in his voice before.
Not once.
"What are you afraid of?"
He looked at her.
For the first time since she knew him, Dominic had no prepared answer.
No perfect explanation.
No confident smile.
Just fear.
Elena picked up the phone.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a woman's voice.
Older.
Weak.
But familiar.
"Elena."
Her heart stopped.
She looked at Claire.
The woman standing in front of her.
Then the phone.
Two voices.
Two impossible truths.
"Who is this?"
The woman on the phone breathed softly.
"My name is Claire Bennett."
Elena froze.
The room became completely silent.
"You can't be."
A pause.
"I know what Harold told you."
Elena's fingers tightened around the phone.
"What did my father tell me?"
The woman on the other end whispered:
"That I disappeared."
Elena looked at Claire.
The woman in the room looked like she was about to cry.
"Who are you?"
The answer came slowly.
"I am your mother."
The words destroyed every thought in Elena's mind.
She couldn't speak.
She couldn't breathe.
For years, she believed she knew her story.
Harold Bennett was her father.
Her mother died when she was young.
That was the story.
The one she grew up with.
The one nobody questioned.
But now everything was falling apart.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
The woman on the phone didn't argue.
"I know this is painful."
"My mother died."
A long silence.
Then:
"That is what Harold wanted people to believe."
Elena looked at Harold's old office.
The photographs.
The memories.
The life she thought she understood.
"What happened?"
The voice on the phone became emotional.
"I was supposed to tell you everything three years ago."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because Dominic found me first."
Everyone looked at Dominic.
His face changed.
Claire in the room stepped backward.
Elena noticed.
"You knew she was alive."
Dominic remained silent.
"You knew my mother was alive."
His silence was the answer.
Elena slowly lowered the phone.
She looked at the man she married.
The man who knew every secret.
The man who controlled the truth around her.
"How much of my life was a lie?"
Dominic finally spoke.
"Elena, listen to me."
"No."
Her voice was calm.
Almost frighteningly calm.
"You don't get to explain anymore."
She walked closer.
"You knew my father."
Yes.
"You knew my mother."
Silence.
"You knew who I was."
Silence.
"And you still married me."
Dominic looked at her.
"I loved you."
The words should have meant something.
Years ago, they would have.
But now they sounded empty.
Elena shook her head.
"No."
Dominic looked hurt.
"I did."
"You loved what I represented."
His expression changed.
"You loved Bennett Harbor."
She pointed toward the documents.
"You loved the access."
Then she looked at him.
"But you never loved me."
Dominic didn't respond.
Because maybe, for the first time, he knew she was right.
Richard stepped forward.
"Elena..."
She turned.
"Not you."
Richard stopped.
"You lied too."
His face fell.
"I know."
"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."
Elena looked around the room.
"My father."
"Richard."
"Dominic."
Her voice became stronger.
"But nobody ever asked what I wanted."
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
The phone remained in her hand.
Her mother was still there.
Waiting.
Elena brought it back to her ear.
"Tell me everything."
The woman on the phone was quiet.
Then she began.
"Your father wasn't your biological father."
Elena closed her eyes.
She already knew.
But hearing it again hurt differently.
"He found you when you were a baby."
"Where?"
"In a hospital."
The woman paused.
"A hospital owned by a company called Moreland Medical."
Elena frowned.
"Why does that matter?"
"Because that company was connected to people who wanted control of your inheritance."
Elena looked at Dominic.
"Why?"
Her mother answered:
"Because you were born into a family with something they wanted."
"What?"
A pause.
"Ownership."
Elena felt confused.
"What ownership?"
The woman continued.
"Your birth family created a private trust."
Richard suddenly looked up.
He knew something.
Elena saw it.
"You know about this."
Richard slowly nodded.
"Some of it."
"Tell me."
He looked ashamed.
"The trust was created before you were born."
"By who?"
Richard swallowed.
"Your biological grandfather."
Elena froze.
"My grandfather?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Richard looked at the documents.
"Because he knew his family would fight over the company."
The pieces started connecting.
The inheritance.
The company.
The lies.
The marriage.
Everything.
Her mother continued.
"Your grandfather created a rule."
"What rule?"
"Only one person could control the trust."
Elena waited.
The answer came.
"You."
Silence.
The entire room changed.
Dominic looked at her.
Not with anger.
With realization.
Elena finally understood.
He never married her because she was weak.
He married her because she was powerful.
A power she didn't even know she had.
The phone suddenly crackled.
Then her mother's voice became urgent.
"Elena, you need to leave."
"What?"
"Right now."
"Why?"
A pause.
"Because Dominic is not the most dangerous person involved."
Everyone looked at Dominic.
His expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
The woman whispered:
"Your father didn't disappear because of Dominic."
Elena felt cold.
"Then who?"
The line went silent.
Too long.
Then:
"Someone inside Bennett Harbor."
Elena looked at Richard.
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
But her mother continued.
"The person who helped Dominic."
Elena's eyes moved.
The person who helped Dominic.
The person who signed documents.
The person who had access.
The person who knew everything.
Richard.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Richard."
He stepped back.
"Elena, no."
"You helped him."
"I made mistakes."
"Did you help him?"
Richard looked down.
That was enough.
Dominic suddenly moved.
Not toward Elena.
Toward Richard.
"You should have stayed quiet."
The sentence shocked everyone.
Richard looked at him.
"You knew?"
Dominic smiled coldly.
"I always knew."
Elena stared.
"What?"
Dominic looked at Richard.
"You thought you were controlling information."
A pause.
"You were just another person I used."
Richard's face changed.
The realization hit him.
Dominic had never trusted him.
Not once.
Elena stepped away.
The man she married.
The people around her.
All connected.
But one question remained.
Why?
Why had Dominic gone this far?
Her mother's voice returned.
"Elena, listen carefully."
The urgency in her tone made everyone stop.
"There is one thing Harold never told you."
"What?"
"Your father didn't leave you the company because he trusted you."
Elena frowned.
"Then why?"
The woman whispered:
"Because he knew one day you would need the company to survive."
The lights flickered.
Everyone looked toward the hallway.
A sound came from outside the penthouse.
A key turning.
Elena froze.
Nobody had a key.
Nobody except—
Dominic looked toward the door.
And for the first time, even he looked terrified.
The lock moved.
The door opened slowly.
A person stepped inside.
Someone Elena had not seen in years.
Someone who should not have been alive.
May you like
And Dominic whispered the name:
"Harold..."
