Chapter 3 - The Secret Inside Her Father’s Office

The office door moved slightly.
Elena froze.
For a moment, she heard nothing.
No footsteps.
No voice.
Only the quiet hum of the old building.
Then the whisper came again.
"Elena..."
Her fingers tightened around the folder in her hand.
Nobody called her that way anymore.
Not with that tone.
Not like they knew her.
Not like they had been waiting for her.
She pushed the door open slowly.
The room was exactly how she remembered it.
Her father's old leather chair sat behind the desk.
The shelves were filled with the same books he had collected over four decades.
The framed photographs remained untouched.
Everything looked frozen in time.
Except one thing.
The photograph Daniel mentioned.
It was sitting in the middle of the desk.
Facing her.
Elena walked closer.
Her heart was beating faster.
She picked it up.
The picture showed her.
Not recently.
Years ago.
She was twenty-four.
Standing outside Bennett Harbor's main building.
Before Dominic.
Before marriage.
Before she started hiding herself.
On the back of the photograph were handwritten words.
Three sentences.
Elena's eyes moved slowly.
"You were never weak."
A pause.
"You were pretending."
Then the final line.
"Your husband knows exactly who you are."
Elena lowered the photograph.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Dominic knew.
The question was no longer whether he underestimated her.
The question was how long he had known the truth.
A sound came from the hallway.
Elena turned.
Nobody was there.
She walked quickly to the door.
Empty.
She looked down.
A small piece of paper was lying on the floor.
She picked it up.
Only one sentence was written.
"Ask him why he needed you to disappear."
Elena stared at the message.
Her first instinct was anger.
Her second was fear.
Not fear for herself.
Fear because someone had been watching everything.
Her father's office wasn't just a room.
It was where Harold Bennett stored the information he trusted nobody else with.
If someone had entered this place, they weren't looking for money.
They were looking for something.
Something connected to Dominic.
Elena returned to the desk.
She opened every drawer.
The first drawer contained old contracts.
The second contained company records.
The third was empty.
But Elena knew her father.
Her father never left empty drawers.
She ran her fingers along the inside.
Then she felt it.
A small gap.
She pressed the wood.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a black envelope.
Her name was written on it.
ELENA.
Her hands shook slightly.
She opened it.
Inside was a single document.
A shareholder agreement.
But it wasn't the one she expected.
It was dated six months before her marriage.
The title immediately caught her attention.
"Emergency Ownership Protection Agreement."
She read the first paragraph.
"If Dominic Marlowe attempts to gain operational control through Elena Bennett Marlowe's personal authority, all executive privileges granted to him shall be considered invalid."
Elena stopped.
Her father had planned for this.
But why?
She continued reading.
Then she saw another name.
Not Dominic.
Not hers.
A third person.
A company advisor.
Someone who had been part of Bennett Harbor for twenty years.
Someone Elena trusted.
The signature at the bottom made her blood run cold.
Richard Hale.
The company's former legal director.
The man who attended her wedding.
The man who helped Dominic understand the company structure.
The man who told Elena:
"Your husband seems like a good man."
She looked at the signature.
Richard knew.
He had known everything.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She stared at the screen.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"Elena Bennett."
She stood still.
"Who is this?"
"You found the agreement."
The way he said it made her feel like he had been waiting.
"Who are you?"
A pause.
"Someone who tried to warn your father."
Elena looked around the office.
"Why didn't you?"
"Because Harold trusted the wrong people."
Her grip tightened around the phone.
"Tell me who."
The man didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he asked:
"Did Dominic tell you where he was the night your father changed his will?"
Elena's expression changed.
"What?"
"The night before Harold Bennett died."
The room went silent.
Elena remembered that night.
Dominic told her he was at a business dinner.
She remembered because she called him three times.
He didn't answer.
Later, he said his phone had died.
She believed him.
The man continued.
"Your father discovered something."
"What?"
"He discovered Dominic wasn't trying to marry you."
Elena's heartbeat increased.
"Then what was he trying to do?"
The line became quiet.
Then the man said:
"Elena, your husband wasn't trying to inherit Bennett Harbor."
A pause.
"He was trying to destroy it and rebuild it under his own name."
The call ended.
Elena stared at the phone.
The room suddenly felt colder.
She looked at the documents again.
At the hidden agreement.
At the photograph.
At the words written by someone who knew her.
Your husband knows exactly who you are.
She needed answers.
And there was only one person who could give them.
Dominic.
When Elena returned home, the penthouse was quiet.
Too quiet.
She expected Dominic to be asleep.
Instead, he was sitting in the living room.
Waiting.
A glass of whiskey rested in his hand.
His expression changed when he saw the folder.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
For half a second.
Only half a second.
But Elena saw it.
He knew.
"Where did you get that?" Dominic asked.
Elena slowly removed her coat.
Interesting.
Not "What is that?"
Not "Why are you looking through my things?"
He asked where she got it.
Because he already knew what it was.
"My father's office."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"Elena."
She almost smiled.
Seven years.
Seven years of him thinking she couldn't notice anything.
"How long?"
His face changed slightly.
"How long what?"
"How long have you known?"
Silence.
The kind of silence that answers before words do.
Dominic placed the glass down.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"You're right."
Elena stepped closer.
"I spent years believing you respected me."
His eyes narrowed.
"This isn't like you."
That sentence almost made her laugh.
Not because it was funny.
Because it proved everything.
He didn't say she was wrong.
He said it wasn't like her.
Like thinking was something she wasn't supposed to do.
"Who told you I don't understand business?"
Dominic looked away.
Only briefly.
But enough.
"Elena."
"Who?"
His voice became calmer.
"Your father filled your head with unrealistic expectations."
There it was.
The manipulation.
The same thing he had done for years.
Making her question herself.
Making her feel unreasonable.
But she was different now.
"My father believed in me."
Dominic looked at her.
"He was afraid you would fail."
The words were carefully chosen.
Designed to hurt.
But they didn't.
Not anymore.
Because Elena knew the truth.
"You don't actually believe that."
Dominic said nothing.
She continued.
"You knew exactly who I was."
A pause.
"You knew I understood every part of Bennett Harbor."
His expression hardened.
"And you still married me."
The room went silent.
Then Dominic stood.
"Elena, this is becoming emotional."
She almost smiled.
Emotional.
His favorite word.
Whenever she questioned him.
Whenever she challenged him.
Whenever she got close to the truth.
He called it emotion.
"You always do that."
"Do what?"
"Make me feel like I am wrong for noticing things."
Dominic stared at her.
For the first time in years, he looked uncertain.
Not because she was angry.
Because she wasn't.
Anger would have been easier.
He understood anger.
He understood tears.
He understood apologies.
But calm?
Calm was dangerous.
"Give me the folder," he said.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Dominic froze.
A small thing.
A simple word.
But it was the first time Elena had ever refused him without explaining.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Elena looked at him.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
Her phone vibrated.
Both of them looked down.
A message appeared.
Unknown sender.
Elena opened it.
One photograph loaded.
Her breath stopped.
It was a picture of Dominic.
Taken years ago.
Before their wedding.
Standing beside someone Elena recognized.
Richard Hale.
But that wasn't what shocked her.
It was the person standing behind them.
Her father.
Harold Bennett.
Alive.
And angry.
A second message appeared.
"Ask Dominic why your father disappeared the night before he changed his will."
Elena looked up.
Dominic was staring at her phone.
And for the first time...
he looked afraid.
May you like
Then the front door of the penthouse unlocked by itself.
Someone was already inside.
