Chapter 4 - The Man Behind The Disappeared Truth

The front door unlocked slowly.

Elena didn't move.

Neither did Dominic.

For a few seconds, they simply stared at each other.

The message on her phone was still glowing.

The photograph of her father.

The words beneath it.

Ask Dominic why your father disappeared the night before he changed his will.

The sound of the door opening echoed through the penthouse.

Someone had entered.

Someone who knew the truth.

Dominic stepped forward.

"Stay here."

Elena looked at him.

A strange feeling passed through her.

For years, Dominic had always acted like he was protecting her.

Opening doors.

Making decisions.

Speaking for her.

But now she noticed something different.

He wasn't protecting her.

He was afraid.

"Why?" Elena asked quietly.

Dominic stopped.

"Because I said so."

The old Elena might have listened.

The old Elena might have lowered her eyes.

But she wasn't that person anymore.

"No."

The single word surprised both of them.

Dominic looked at her.

"What did you say?"

Elena walked past him.

"I said no."

She moved toward the hallway.

Every step felt different.

Not because she wasn't scared.

She was.

But fear was no longer controlling her.

At the end of the hallway, a figure stood in the shadows.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark coat.

His face was partially hidden.

Dominic immediately stepped between them.

"How did you get in here?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Elena.

Not Dominic.

Elena noticed.

And that told her everything.

"You're Elena Bennett," the man said.

Her expression tightened.

Nobody called her that anymore.

Not after marriage.

Not after she became Elena Marlowe.

"Who are you?"

The man slowly stepped into the light.

Elena recognized him.

And her entire body went cold.

Richard Hale.

Her father's former legal director.

The man whose signature appeared in the hidden agreement.

The man who had helped Dominic understand Bennett Harbor.

The man who disappeared from the company two years ago.

Dominic's face changed.

"Richard."

Richard looked at him.

"Still pretending everything belongs to you?"

The silence answered more than words.

Elena looked between them.

"You two know each other."

Richard gave a bitter smile.

"Unfortunately, yes."

Dominic's voice became sharp.

"You shouldn't be here."

Richard ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Elena.

"Your father knew."

"Knew what?"

Richard reached into his coat.

Elena immediately became cautious.

But he didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

Her name was written on it.

ELENA.

Her hands slowly moved toward it.

"My father wrote that?"

Richard nodded.

"Three days before he died."

Elena stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't I receive it?"

Richard looked at Dominic.

That one look changed the atmosphere.

Elena noticed.

Dominic noticed too.

"Answer me."

Richard took a breath.

"Because someone removed it before the lawyers could deliver it."

Elena felt her stomach tighten.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

She looked at Dominic.

His silence was enough.

"No."

Dominic stepped forward.

"Elena, don't do this."

"Don't do what?"

"Believe a man who betrayed your father."

Richard laughed quietly.

A humorless laugh.

"That's exactly what you told Harold."

Elena looked at Richard.

"What happened that night?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He looked at Dominic.

Then back at Elena.

"Your father discovered Dominic had been moving company assets."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"Small amounts at first."

Richard continued.

"Enough that nobody noticed."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"Careful."

Richard ignored him.

"Harold found missing funds. He found private accounts. He found plans to separate Bennett Harbor's most valuable assets before the ownership transfer."

Elena stared at Dominic.

"No."

The word came out softer than she expected.

Dominic looked at her.

"Elena, listen to me."

"Is it true?"

Silence.

"Is it true?"

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand corporate restructuring."

The answer hurt more than a confession.

Because it was the same excuse.

Again.

He wasn't denying it.

He was explaining why she shouldn't understand.

Richard handed Elena the envelope.

"Your father knew he couldn't stop Dominic directly."

She opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Her father's handwriting.

The first line made her eyes burn.

"My dear Ellie."

She continued reading.

"If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from someone I invited into our family."

Elena swallowed.

Her hands trembled.

"Dominic is not interested in building your future."

She looked up.

"He is interested in owning it."

The room became silent.

The letter continued.

"I made a mistake."

A tear formed in Elena's eye.

Not because she was weak.

Because her father was admitting something.

Something he had carried alone.

"I thought love would change ambition."

The next sentence made her stop.

"I was wrong."

Elena lowered the paper.

Dominic looked away.

For the first time, he looked like someone who had lost control of the situation.

"You let him fool you too," Elena whispered.

Richard looked down.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised her.

"I helped Dominic access information."

Elena looked at him sharply.

"Why?"

"Because I thought he was building a company."

Richard's voice became heavier.

"I didn't realize he was building a trap."

A notification interrupted them.

Elena's phone.

Another message.

Unknown sender.

She opened it.

A document appeared.

A bank transfer.

Her eyes moved across the screen.

Then stopped.

The account receiving the money belonged to:

Richard Hale.

She looked at him.

"What is this?"

Richard went silent.

Dominic noticed.

And for the first time that night, he smiled.

Not happily.

Almost relieved.

"Now you see."

Elena looked at Richard.

"Did you take money from him?"

Richard didn't answer.

"Did you?"

His silence was enough.

Elena stepped back.

Everything was becoming harder to separate.

The truth.

The lies.

The people who claimed to help her.

The people who admitted hurting her.

Dominic slowly walked toward her.

"Elena, you need to understand something."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"You think this is about the company."

He stopped.

"It isn't."

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Dominic continued.

"It's about your father."

Elena's expression changed.

"What about him?"

Dominic stared at her.

"He didn't die naturally."

The room went completely still.

Nobody spoke.

The words hung there.

Impossible.

Dangerous.

Elena felt like the floor moved beneath her.

"What did you say?"

Dominic looked at Richard.

"You should tell her."

Richard's face changed.

"Don't."

Dominic smiled slightly.

"You wanted her to know the truth."

Elena looked at Richard.

"What happened to my father?"

Richard looked away.

And that was the moment Elena knew.

Whatever answer came next would change everything.

"He didn't disappear."

Richard whispered.

"He was taken."

Elena's breathing stopped.

"By who?"

Richard didn't answer.

Because the answer wasn't his to give.

Dominic stepped closer.

"The person who benefited most from his death."

Elena looked at him.

"Who?"

Dominic stared at her.

Then slowly said:

"The person you've trusted your entire life."

Her phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared.

This time there was a video attached.

The title was:

"THE NIGHT HAROLD BENNETT VANISHED."

Elena pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then a security camera image appeared.

A hallway.

Bennett Harbor headquarters.

The date was three years ago.

The night her father disappeared.

Elena watched the footage.

Her father walked into the building.

Then another person entered behind him.

Someone she recognized immediately.

Someone she never expected to see.

May you like

The video zoomed in.

And Elena saw the face of the person standing behind her father...
