Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed To Know

The lights came back.

Slowly.

One by one.

The penthouse returned from darkness.

But Elena didn't feel relief.

Because the person standing in the doorway was real.

A woman.

Older.

Pale.

Her eyes fixed on Elena.

Not Dominic.

Not Richard.

Elena.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the woman whispered:

"You're exactly like her."

Elena couldn't move.

The woman's voice.

The phone call.

The warning.

The impossible connection.

Everything suddenly came together.

"You called me."

The woman nodded.

"Yes."

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at the photograph still in Elena's hand.

The old hospital picture.

The baby.

Harold Bennett.

The woman holding the child.

Then she looked back at Elena.

"My name is Claire."

The name meant nothing.

But the way Dominic reacted meant everything.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Fear.

Elena saw it.

And this time she didn't ignore it.

"You know her."

Dominic remained silent.

Claire stepped into the room.

"I knew he would never tell you."

Elena looked at Dominic.

"Tell me what?"

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Elena, this woman is lying."

Claire smiled sadly.

"That's what you said when Harold found out."

The mention of her father's name changed the entire room.

Elena looked between them.

"What does my father have to do with you?"

Claire took a deep breath.

"Everything."

She reached into her bag.

Elena immediately became cautious.

But Claire pulled out an old hospital bracelet.

Small.

Faded.

Yellowed with time.

She placed it on the table.

Elena looked down.

The name printed on it was almost unreadable.

But one thing remained clear.

A date.

The same date on her birth certificate.

Elena stared.

"Where did you get that?"

Claire looked at her.

"Because it belonged to you."

The room went silent.

"No."

The word escaped before Elena could stop it.

Claire's expression softened.

"I know this is hard."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"My father raised me."

"Yes."

Claire nodded.

"Because he chose you."

That sentence made Elena stop.

Not because it made sense.

Because it didn't.

"What does that mean?"

Claire sat down slowly.

"Your biological parents were involved in something dangerous."

Elena looked at Dominic.

He looked away.

Again.

"You knew."

Dominic didn't answer.

"You knew."

His silence became confirmation.

Elena felt something break inside.

Not love.

That was already gone.

Trust.

The last remaining piece.

"How long?"

Dominic finally looked at her.

"Since before we married."

The answer was quiet.

Too quiet.

Elena laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"So you knew who I was."

Dominic said nothing.

"You knew where I came from."

Silence.

"And you still made me believe I was just a lucky daughter who inherited everything."

His expression hardened.

"I was trying to protect you."

Elena stared at him.

The sentence almost felt insulting.

Protect.

Another word people used when they wanted control.

Claire looked at Dominic.

"You always say that."

Dominic turned.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"I know exactly what I'm talking about."

Claire's voice became stronger.

"Because I watched you do the same thing to Harold."

Elena looked at her.

"What happened between you and my father?"

Claire looked down.

"Your father saved my life."

The answer surprised Elena.

"He found out the people around him were trying to use you."

"Use me for what?"

Claire hesitated.

Then said:

"Your inheritance."

Elena looked at the documents on the desk.

Everything came back.

The company.

The marriage.

The manipulation.

The hidden agreements.

"You all knew."

Claire looked at her.

"Not everyone."

"Who didn't?"

Claire's eyes softened.

"You."

The answer hurt because it was true.

Elena spent years believing she was protected.

When the truth was that she had been the only person left outside the room.

The only person not invited into the conspiracy.

Richard stepped forward.

"Claire, she needs to know the whole story."

Dominic immediately looked at him.

"No."

Richard ignored him.

"She deserves the truth."

Dominic's voice became colder.

"Think carefully about what happens if you tell her."

Richard stopped.

Elena noticed.

A threat.

Not spoken.

But understood.

She turned toward Dominic.

"Are you threatening him?"

"No."

"Then why did he stop?"

Dominic looked away.

Because he had no answer.

Claire walked closer.

"Elena, your father discovered something three years ago."

"What?"

"He discovered Dominic wasn't working alone."

The room became silent.

Elena looked at Dominic.

"Who else?"

Claire didn't answer immediately.

She reached into her bag again.

This time she pulled out a document.

An old company report.

She placed it in front of Elena.

The first page showed financial transfers.

The second showed signatures.

Then Elena saw the name.

Her heart stopped.

Because it was impossible.

The person helping Dominic wasn't a stranger.

It was someone she trusted.

Someone who had attended every family event.

Someone who had been at her wedding.

Someone who had held her father's hand at the hospital.

She looked up.

"Richard."

Richard closed his eyes.

Elena turned toward him.

"You were involved?"

Richard looked devastated.

"I was."

The honesty shocked her more than a lie would have.

"Why?"

Richard's voice cracked.

"Because I made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"I believed Dominic when he said he was protecting Bennett Harbor."

Elena looked at Dominic.

"And when did you realize he wasn't?"

Richard didn't answer.

Claire did.

"When Harold disappeared."

Elena felt cold.

"What happened that night?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire said:

"Your father discovered Dominic planned to remove you from control of the company."

Elena looked at Dominic.

"He couldn't."

Claire nodded.

"Because your father had already changed everything."

She pointed at the document.

"That is why Dominic needed another plan."

"What plan?"

Claire looked at her.

"Make you believe you were nothing without him."

Elena felt the words hit deeper than any accusation.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Every joke.

Every comment.

Every time he made her doubt herself.

It wasn't random.

It was strategy.

A strategy to make her surrender before she even realized there was a battle.

Her phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown message.

Elena opened it.

A video.

The title:

"THE LAST CONVERSATION WITH HAROLD BENNETT."

Her hands trembled.

She pressed play.

The screen showed her father's office.

The same office.

The same desk.

Harold sat there.

Alive.

Angry.

And across from him...

Dominic.

But this time, Elena noticed something else.

A reflection in the glass behind them.

Someone else was standing there.

Someone who had been hidden from the camera.

Someone who had listened to every word.

The video audio became clearer.

Harold looked directly at Dominic.

"You don't understand what you've done."

Dominic replied:

"You left me no choice."

Harold shook his head.

"You were never after my company."

A pause.

"You were after her."

Elena stopped breathing.

The camera shifted slightly.

The hidden person's reflection became clearer.

Then Harold said one final sentence.

A sentence that made Elena drop the phone from her hand.

"Because Elena is not the Bennett heir..."

The video froze.

The screen went black.

And beneath it appeared a new message.

"She is the last person who can expose us."

Then Elena's apartment phone rang.

The old landline.

A phone that had not worked in years.

Everyone stared at it.

It rang again.

And the caller ID showed a name Elena had never seen before.

But Dominic had.

Because the color drained from his face.

May you like

The name on the screen was:

CLAIRE BENNETT.
