Chapter 2 - The File He Was Never Supposed To Find

The computer screen glowed in the darkness.
The words stared back at Elena.
"Elena, you were never the victim..."
She did not move.
For several seconds, she simply stood there with one hand resting on the edge of her desk.
The old version of herself would have been afraid.
The old Elena would have wondered who sent the message.
She would have worried about whether Dominic knew.
She would have searched for excuses.
Maybe there was a misunderstanding.
Maybe she heard the conversation wrong.
Maybe her husband was just trying to impress wealthy friends.
But that woman was gone.
The woman who spent seven years explaining away someone's cruelty had finally become tired of explaining.
Elena sat down slowly.
Her father's folder remained open beside the computer.
The room was silent except for the sound of rain tapping against the glass windows.
She clicked the unknown file.
A loading circle appeared.
Then a video opened.
Her father's face appeared on the screen.
Elena froze.
Harold Bennett had been dead for three years.
She had watched him become weaker.
She had held his hand in the hospital.
She had heard his final words.
"Trust your instincts, Ellie."
At the time, she thought he was talking about business.
Now she wasn't sure.
The video quality was old.
Her father sat behind his office desk at Bennett Harbor Logistics.
The same desk where he had built his empire.
His expression was serious.
Not the gentle father Elena remembered.
This was Harold Bennett the businessman.
The man who could negotiate billion-dollar deals without raising his voice.
"If you are watching this," Harold said, "something happened that made you question the people closest to you."
Elena leaned forward.
Her heart began beating faster.
"I recorded this because I knew there would come a time when people would underestimate you."
Her father's eyes looked directly into the camera.
"Especially the man you married."
Elena stopped breathing.
Dominic.
Her father knew.
The thought felt impossible.
Harold continued.
"Dominic Marlowe is intelligent. Charming. Ambitious."
A pause.
"But ambition without loyalty becomes dangerous."
Elena looked at the bedroom door.
Dominic was still asleep.
The man who smiled at investors.
The man who shook hands with politicians.
The man everyone admired.
Her father had seen through him.
"I watched Dominic for two years before you married him."
Elena's face changed.
Two years?
"At first, I thought he loved you."
Her father's voice became quieter.
"Then I noticed something."
The video paused briefly.
"He never asked about your dreams."
The words hit harder than Elena expected.
Because they were true.
Dominic knew her favorite restaurant.
He knew the perfume she wore.
He knew the movies she liked.
But he never asked what she wanted to build.
What she wanted to achieve.
Who she wanted to become.
Harold continued.
"He asked about Bennett Harbor."
Elena looked down.
Her fingers touched the edge of the folder.
The same folder she had ignored for years.
"Elena, if you are watching this, I need you to understand something."
Her father's expression softened.
"You were never just my daughter."
A small smile appeared.
"You were the best strategist I ever trained."
Elena felt tears forming.
Not because she was hurt.
Because she finally remembered who she was.
For years, Dominic had convinced her that she was too emotional.
Too soft.
Too focused on family.
But her father had believed the opposite.
"You allowed people to underestimate you because you thought kindness was weakness."
Harold looked away for a moment.
"It isn't."
The video became darker.
The next words changed everything.
"Before you married Dominic, I created a protection clause."
Elena immediately sat straighter.
"What protection clause?"
The video continued.
"If Dominic ever attempts to gain control of Bennett Harbor through marriage, manipulation, or false representation, all voting authority transfers immediately."
Elena stared.
Transfers to who?
Her father answered.
"You."
Silence.
The room felt different.
For seven years, Dominic believed marrying her gave him power.
But he had never owned anything.
He had only been standing near the person who did.
The video ended.
A new document appeared.
Elena opened it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she saw something that made her hands go cold.
Dominic had already started the process.
He wasn't planning for the future.
He was acting now.
There were copies of emails.
Meeting schedules.
Board discussions.
Private conversations.
Dominic had been slowly convincing executives that Elena had no interest in running the company.
He had created a story.
A story where he was the responsible husband protecting a wife who was incapable of leadership.
And many people believed him.
Because Elena let them.
A notification appeared.
Another file.
This one was named:
"VANESSA CROSS."
Elena hesitated.
Then she opened it.
Photos appeared.
Dominic and Vanessa.
Not at public events.
Not innocent meetings.
Private dinners.
Secret hotel entrances.
Messages.
Elena didn't feel shocked.
Not anymore.
The affair hurt less than the reason behind it.
Dominic didn't betray her because he wanted someone else.
He betrayed her because he believed she was beneath him.
She scrolled further.
Then she saw something strange.
A conversation between Dominic and Vanessa.
VANESSA: "How long until the shares transfer?"
DOMINIC: "Soon."
VANESSA: "And then?"
DOMINIC: "Then Elena won't be a problem anymore."
Elena stopped.
Her eyes narrowed.
She read the sentence again.
"Elena won't be a problem anymore."
Not divorce.
Not separation.
A problem.
Her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Daniel.
Her driver.
She answered.
"Daniel?"
There was silence.
Then his voice came.
"Mrs. Marlowe, I need to tell you something."
Elena stood.
"What happened?"
"I found something in the car."
"What?"
"Your husband asked me to install something three months ago."
Elena's expression changed.
"What did he install?"
Daniel hesitated.
"A tracking device."
The room became cold.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because he told me it was for your safety."
Elena closed her eyes.
Of course.
Everything was disguised as care.
Control always looked like protection when someone did it carefully.
"Daniel, remove it."
"I already did."
"Good."
Another pause.
"But that's not why I called."
Elena waited.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Mrs. Marlowe, I saw someone enter your father's old office tonight."
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"My father's office?"
"Yes."
"Who?"
"I couldn't see his face."
Elena looked toward the hallway.
"Daniel, that office has been locked since my father died."
"I know."
A longer silence.
"That's why I was worried."
Elena looked at the computer screen.
The files.
The videos.
The messages.
Everything was connected.
Someone had been hiding things.
Someone had been waiting.
"Did you see what they took?"
Daniel answered slowly.
"No."
"Then why call me?"
Because she already knew.
She could hear fear in his voice.
"Because whoever entered your father's office left something behind."
Elena walked toward the desk.
"What?"
Daniel took a breath.
"A photograph."
Elena stopped.
"What photograph?"
"I don't know."
"Daniel."
His voice became quieter.
"But Mrs. Marlowe..."
"What?"
"The picture was of you."
Elena looked at the dark computer screen.
Her reflection stared back.
A woman she barely recognized.
"Where is it now?"
"Still inside the office."
"Lock the building."
"I tried."
"And?"
Daniel hesitated.
"The door opened from the inside."
Elena felt every instinct inside her wake up.
Her father's office.
The hidden files.
Dominic's secret plan.
The photograph.
Someone was moving faster than she was.
She grabbed her coat.
"What are you doing?" Daniel asked.
"I'm going there."
"Mrs. Marlowe, you shouldn't go alone."
Elena reached for the folder.
For the first time in years, she felt completely clear.
"No."
She looked at the company documents.
At her father's handwriting.
At Dominic's name.
"I spent seven years letting people decide who I was."
She picked up her keys.
"I'm done with that."
Twenty minutes later, Elena stood inside Bennett Harbor's old executive building.
The hallway was dark.
The security lights flickered.
Her father's office was at the end.
The door was slightly open.
She stopped.
She knew that door.
Her father used to lock it every night.
Always.
She walked closer.
The office light was on.
Someone was inside.
Elena reached for the door handle.
May you like
It was already unlocked from the inside.
Someone whispered her name.
