Chapter 7 - The Hearing

“They’re claiming pregnancy-related instability.”

Grace stared at the petition.

Her attorney looked disgusted.

“They cite emotional distress, impulsive financial decisions, and undue influence from Adrian Vale.”

Grace laughed once.

“They’re calling me crazy because I signed papers they didn’t want me to sign.”

“In more polite legal language.”

Ethan entered the conference room.

“Use me.”

Grace looked up.

“What?”

“I can testify.”

Her attorney frowned.

“Mr. Calloway, your credibility is complicated.”

“I know.”

Ethan sat across from Grace.

“My father will say Grace acted irrationally because she discovered my affair.”

“That’s exactly what he says,” the attorney replied.

“Then I’ll testify she didn’t.”

Grace studied him.

Ethan continued.

“She didn’t scream. She didn’t threaten me. She didn’t even know I was on the island when she arranged the meeting with Adrian.”

Grace understood.

The timeline mattered.

She had begun investigating weeks before discovering the affair.

Her decision was financial.

Not emotional revenge.

“Why are you doing this?” she asked again.

Ethan looked tired.

“Because I spent years assuming you would always be there.”

His voice lowered.

“And somewhere along the way, I started treating your love like something I owned.”

Grace felt tears threaten.

She refused them.

“I don’t need another apology.”

“I know.”

The hearing began two days later.

Richard sat beside Martin.

Grace sat beside her attorneys.

Adrian was behind her.

Ethan entered alone.

Richard looked at his son.

Ethan did not look back.

The judge reviewed medical affidavits, financial records, and the timeline.

Martin argued Grace had been manipulated by Adrian.

Grace’s attorney produced emails proving Grace contacted Adrian’s legal team before the island trip.

Martin argued Grace lacked corporate experience.

Grace’s attorney produced eighteen months of correspondence showing Grace had repeatedly requested access to trust records.

Then Ethan testified.

Martin approached him.

“Mr. Calloway, your wife discovered you were having an affair?”

“Yes.”

“And immediately afterward she signed documents taking control of your company?”

“No.”

Martin paused.

“No?”

“She signed them after weeks of legal review. Discovering my affair happened minutes before.”

“Would you describe her as emotional?”

Ethan looked at Grace.

“Yes.”

Martin smiled.

Then Ethan continued.

“She was heartbroken.”

The smile faded.

“But she was also calmer than I deserved.”

Grace looked down.

Ethan testified that she had never threatened him.

Never used the company to punish him.

Never demanded money.

Never tried to stop him seeing their unborn child.

Richard watched his son with growing rage.

Then Martin made his mistake.

“Isn’t it true, Mr. Calloway, that your wife has become romantically involved with Adrian Vale?”

“No.”

“How can you know?”

“Because I’m the one who betrayed my marriage.”

Ethan’s voice was steady.

“Don’t put my behavior on Grace.”

Silence filled the courtroom.

The petition failed.

Grace remained trustee.

Richard walked out before the judge finished speaking.

In the corridor, he stopped beside Ethan.

“You chose her over your family.”

Ethan looked at him.

“She is my family.”

Richard slapped him.

Everyone froze.

Ethan did not retaliate.

Richard leaned close.

“You have no idea what she’s taking from you.”

Ethan wiped blood from his lip.

“No. I finally know what you did.”

Richard walked away.

That night, federal agents executed warrants at Calloway Maritime.

Records disappeared minutes before they arrived.

Someone inside had warned Richard.

Only six people knew about the warrants.

One was Ethan.

One was Adrian.

One was Grace.

Three were federal officials.

Suspicion spread instantly.

Grace sat in silence as Ward explained.

“We have a leak.”

Ethan looked toward Adrian.

Adrian looked toward Ethan.

Grace hated what Richard had accomplished.

He had made trust impossible.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

YOU’RE TRUSTING THE WRONG VALE.

Attached was a photograph.

Adrian stood beside Martin Voss.

The timestamp was from three nights earlier.

The night Adrian claimed he had been with federal investigators.

Grace enlarged the image.

Martin was handing Adrian an envelope.

And Adrian was taking it.
