Chapter 5 - The Successor Trustee

Adrian pulled Grace behind the metal shelving.

The lock turned.

The door rose six inches.

Then twelve.

A pair of black shoes appeared.

Adrian positioned himself between Grace and the entrance.

The door lifted completely.

A woman stood outside.

She was perhaps sixty.

Gray suit.

White hair.

No weapon.

She held a federal identification card.

“Grace Calloway?”

Grace did not move.

The woman showed the badge.

“Special Agent Helen Ward. Financial Crimes Division.”

Adrian checked the credentials.

They were real.

Agent Ward looked at the open box.

“You found Samuel’s archive.”

“You knew about it?” Grace asked.

“We knew it existed.”

“Why didn’t you take it?”

“Because we didn’t know where it was.”

Grace thought of Celeste.

“She told you?”

“Six months ago.”

Ward explained that Celeste had contacted federal investigators after discovering Richard had restarted the same financial scheme Samuel uncovered years earlier.

But Richard had become more careful.

He routed money through companies tied to Ethan and Vanessa.

“We believe he intended to destroy his son professionally,” Ward said.

Ethan’s betrayal remained unforgivable.

But Grace felt something twist inside her.

“Why?”

“Control.”

Richard had discovered the Hawthorne Trust could remove him from Calloway Maritime.

Ethan, despite his arrogance, had begun questioning several transactions.

Richard needed him compromised.

An affair with Vanessa created leverage.

Fraudulent transfers created criminal exposure.

And Grace’s pregnancy created an opportunity.

“If something happened to me,” Grace said, “Ethan could control the trust for our son.”

Ward nodded.

“And Richard believed he could control Ethan.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“What about me?”

Ward’s eyes moved to his initials.

“That’s why Richard fears you.”

Grace turned.

Adrian looked genuinely shaken.

At seventeen, he had unknowingly signed papers his father described as estate planning documents.

Samuel had named him successor trustee.

The arrangement could activate only if Grace requested it or became unable to serve.

Richard apparently believed Adrian was trying to trigger it himself.

Grace almost smiled at the absurdity.

The tabloids would love it.

Pregnant heiress.

Cheating husband.

Young billionaire.

Corporate war.

The truth was less romantic and more dangerous.

“Where is Richard?” Grace asked.

“We’re looking.”

“And Martin?”

Ward’s expression hardened.

“We believe Martin has been helping him for years.”

Grace felt betrayed all over again.

Her grandfather had trusted Martin.

So had she.

They took the archive to a secure office.

By evening, forensic accountants had confirmed something extraordinary.

The thirty-eight million dollars had not disappeared.

It had been moved.

But not into Richard’s personal accounts.

The final destination was an investment vehicle acquiring Calloway Maritime debt.

Someone was using company money to buy leverage over the company itself.

“Who owns the vehicle?” Grace asked.

Ward placed a document down.

Vanessa Reed.

Again.

Grace shook her head.

“Forged.”

“Probably.”

Then Ward showed the underlying beneficiary.

Celeste Reed.

Grace stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Celeste says she knows nothing about it.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Could Richard be setting her up too?”

Ward nodded.

“Or she could be lying.”

Grace thought of the blood on Celeste’s phone.

The fear in her eyes.

She did not know anymore.

Her phone buzzed.

Ethan.

She ignored it.

Again.

Then a message.

PLEASE ANSWER. VANESSA IS GONE.

Grace called.

“What happened?”

Ethan sounded breathless.

“She left the clinic.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. Her mother woke up and they argued.”

“About what?”

“Celeste told Vanessa Richard was her father.”

Grace went silent.

“What?”

“Vanessa is my half sister.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Adrian heard.

His expression hardened.

Grace closed her eyes.

Ethan had been having an affair with a woman who, unbeknownst to either of them, might be his half sister.

The horror in Ethan’s voice was unmistakable.

“Where is Vanessa?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find her.”

“I’m trying.”

Grace ended the call.

Ward was already making calls.

Thirty minutes later, they located Vanessa’s rental car.

Abandoned.

Her purse was inside.

Her phone was gone.

On the passenger seat was a photograph.

Grace recognized it when Ward sent the image.

It showed Richard Calloway holding a newborn baby.

On the back was a date.

Twenty-nine years earlier.
