Chapter 6 - The Daughter Richard Claimed

Vanessa found them before they found her.

At 2:13 a.m., she walked into the federal building carrying a sealed envelope.

Her makeup was gone.

Her hair was loose.

She looked younger.

And furious.

“My mother lied.”

Ethan stood.

Vanessa stopped when she saw him.

Neither moved closer.

Whatever attraction had existed between them was gone beneath something far more disturbing.

“Are we related?” Ethan asked.

Vanessa looked at Grace instead.

“I don’t know.”

Celeste arrived under federal escort an hour later.

She answered.

“No.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Vanessa sat down.

Celeste explained that Richard had spent years allowing people to believe Vanessa might be his daughter.

It gave him control over Celeste.

The truth was different.

Vanessa’s father had been Daniel Vale.

Adrian’s father.

Adrian stared at her.

Vanessa stared back.

“My father?”

Celeste nodded.

“Adrian is your half brother.”

Nobody spoke.

Grace watched two strangers discover a family connection neither had imagined.

Adrian’s face softened first.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“He wanted to.”

Celeste began crying.

“But Richard threatened all of us.”

Daniel had discovered the original theft.

Celeste had helped him.

They had fallen in love.

Vanessa was born.

Richard learned the truth and used it as leverage.

When Daniel threatened to expose him, he died in the boating accident.

“Richard killed him?” Adrian asked.

Celeste looked down.

“I could never prove it.”

Ward interrupted.

“But Samuel tried.”

The old investigation suddenly had a human center.

Not money.

Fear.

Families.

Secrets passed down like poisoned inheritances.

Grace looked at Ethan.

He had spent his life worshiping a man who might have destroyed everyone around him.

Ethan looked back.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace knew he meant more than Vanessa.

“I know.”

It was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But it was the first honest sentence between them.

The envelope Vanessa brought contained records from Celeste’s private safe.

One document mattered most.

A partnership agreement.

Richard had a silent partner.

Martin Voss.

Samuel’s attorney.

They had been stealing together.

Martin controlled the legal structures.

Richard controlled Calloway Maritime.

Daniel discovered them.

Samuel nearly exposed them.

Then Daniel died.

Samuel became cautious.

Years later, Samuel died of natural causes—but before dying, he built the trust as a trap.

Grace finally understood.

Her grandfather had known evidence alone might disappear.

So he created a structure Richard could not easily destroy.

A structure that eventually belonged to Grace.

Ward looked at the documents.

“We can move now.”

But Richard moved first.

At dawn, Calloway Maritime’s board received an emergency notice.

Grace Calloway was accused of conspiring with Adrian Vale to seize the company through fraudulent trust documents.

News outlets picked it up within an hour.

By breakfast, photographs from the island were everywhere.

Grace beside Adrian.

Ethan beside Vanessa.

The story practically wrote itself.

Two affairs.

A corporate coup.

A pregnant wife.

A billionaire.

Grace’s phone exploded with notifications.

Her attorney called.

“Do not speak publicly.”

Ethan entered.

“I will.”

Grace looked at him.

“What?”

“I’ll tell them the truth.”

“You’ll destroy yourself.”

“I already did.”

He stood straighter.

“I cheated. I lied. I humiliated you. I’m not letting my father turn that into evidence against you.”

Grace stared at him.

For years Ethan had protected his image before everything.

Now he was offering to burn it.

“Why?”

“Because for once, I want to do the right thing without asking what it costs me.”

Grace said nothing.

At noon, Ethan walked into a press conference alone.

He admitted the affair.

He denied Grace had known.

He stated publicly that Adrian had not caused the breakdown of their marriage.

And then he said something Richard had not expected.

“My wife has every legal right to investigate Calloway Maritime. I will cooperate fully.”

Calloway stock dropped.

Ethan’s reputation collapsed.

But Richard’s narrative weakened.

That evening, Grace watched the recording.

She did not forgive Ethan.

But something inside her shifted.

Adrian sat beside her.

“He protected you.”

“He told the truth.”

“Sometimes that costs more.”

Grace looked at him.

“Are you defending my husband?”

“No.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“I’m observing him.”

Grace almost smiled too.

Then Agent Ward entered.

“We found Richard.”

“Where?”

“New York.”

Grace stood.

Ward placed a photograph on the table.

Richard was entering Calloway Maritime headquarters.

Beside him was Martin Voss.

And in Martin’s hand was a court order.

Grace read the first line.

EMERGENCY PETITION TO DECLARE GRACE CALLOWAY LEGALLY INCOMPETENT.

Her hand moved instinctively to her unborn child.

May you like

Richard was not trying to take the company anymore.

He was trying to take her son.
