Chapter 6 - The Person In The Photograph

Daniel stared at the photo on his phone.
He couldn’t move.
He couldn’t speak.
The hospital room appeared in the image.
The same room where Emma had been sleeping.
The same room where he had first held his daughter.
The same room where he had finally learned the truth.
But there was something else.
Someone else.
A figure standing behind the crib.
A person facing away from the camera.
Wearing a dark jacket.
Watching.
Daniel zoomed in.
His fingers trembled.
The photo was blurry.
But not blurry enough.
He recognized the person.
“No…”
The word escaped his mouth.
Rachel looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He looked at Marcus.
Then Olivia.
Neither of them understood.
“Who is it?”
Rachel asked again.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“That’s impossible.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Daniel.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“Who is in the photo?”
He looked at the image one more time.
Then said the name.
“Thomas.”
The room went silent.
Olivia’s face changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Rachel noticed.
“You know that name.”
Olivia didn’t respond.
Daniel looked at her.
“You know him.”
Her silence was the answer.
“Who is Thomas?”
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
Like he had heard enough.
Like he knew something Daniel didn’t.
Daniel turned toward him.
“You knew too.”
Marcus looked away.
That was all it took.
Daniel laughed softly.
A bitter sound.
“Everyone knew.”
He looked around the room.
“Everyone except me.”
Daniel drove back to the hospital faster than he ever had before.
Every red light felt like an insult.
Every second felt stolen.
Because for the first time in his life, he understood what it meant to be afraid of losing someone.
Not a business deal.
Not money.
Not reputation.
His daughter.
When he entered the hospital room, he expected chaos.
He expected doctors.
Nurses.
Questions.
Instead, everything was quiet.
Too quiet.
I was sitting on the bed.
Emma was in my arms.
And the moment I saw Daniel’s face, I knew something had happened.
“What happened?”
He stopped.
Because my first question wasn’t about him.
It was about our daughter.
“She’s okay.”
I looked down at Emma.
Relief crossed my face.
Then I looked back at him.
“What happened?”
Daniel walked closer.
“Someone was in this room.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
“The security footage shows someone entered while you were asleep.”
My hands tightened around Emma.
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
And I immediately knew.
There was a name.
A person.
Something he didn’t want to say.
“Daniel.”
He looked at me.
“Thomas.”
The name hit me.
I froze.
Because I knew exactly who he meant.
“You know him?”
Daniel saw my reaction.
“You do.”
I looked away.
A mistake.
A tiny one.
But he noticed.
“You knew.”
My throat tightened.
“Daniel…”
“How long?”
I didn’t answer.
“How long did you know Thomas?”
I looked at Emma.
Then at him.
“Since before we separated.”
His face changed.
“Before?”
I nodded slowly.
“He contacted me.”
“Why?”
I swallowed.
“Because he knew something about Olivia.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?”
I looked at him.
“The truth about why she wanted us apart.”
The room became silent.
For months, everyone had been talking around the truth.
Nobody had actually said it.
Not completely.
Not to Daniel.
“Tell me.”
His voice was quiet.
But I heard the pain behind it.
I took a deep breath.
“Thomas was Olivia’s former boyfriend.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“They were together before you met her.”
I continued.
“He told me Olivia didn’t leave him because she wanted you.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“She left him because he knew too much.”
“About what?”
I looked toward the window.
“About Olivia’s past.”
Daniel waited.
“She had been using people for years.”
His expression hardened.
“Using?”
“She found powerful men. Successful men. Men who could give her the life she wanted.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
But his voice lacked certainty.
“She wasn’t like that.”
I looked at him.
“Daniel.”
He stopped.
“Your biggest mistake was believing Olivia loved you because she made you feel special.”
The words hurt.
I knew they did.
But they were true.
“She loved what you represented.”
Daniel looked down.
“And when she realized Emma existed…”
“She panicked.”
I nodded.
“She knew a child would connect us forever.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“So she hid her.”
“Yes.”
The room went quiet.
Then Daniel asked the question that I knew was coming.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I looked at him.
“Because I tried.”
His expression changed.
“Before the divorce?”
I nodded.
“I tried to tell you everything.”
My voice became softer.
“But every time I got close, something happened.”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Your meetings changed.”
“Your phone was always with Olivia.”
“You stopped coming home.”
I looked at him.
“And then one day, I saw you signing papers.”
Daniel froze.
“What papers?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I remembered that day.
The day my entire world collapsed.
“Divorce papers.”
His face changed.
“I never signed anything without talking to you.”
I looked at him.
“That’s what I thought.”
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“What are you saying?”
I reached into the drawer beside the bed.
Then pulled out a document.
Daniel looked at it.
“What is that?”
“The divorce agreement.”
He took it.
His eyes scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
“No.”
I watched him.
“There’s no way.”
His hands shook.
“Your signature…”
I nodded.
“I never signed that.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“I never signed it.”
The color disappeared from his face.
Someone had forged my signature.
Someone had planned everything.
Someone wanted our marriage destroyed.
And they succeeded.
Daniel looked at the document again.
Then suddenly his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Nobody spoke at first.
Then a voice came through.
A voice Daniel recognized.
“Daniel.”
His face changed.
“Thomas?”
I couldn’t hear what Thomas said.
But I saw Daniel’s expression.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What do you mean you have proof?”
Silence.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“Where?”
Another pause.
His grip tightened around the phone.
“Don’t touch anything.”
He ended the call.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Thomas found something.”
“What?”
He swallowed.
“The person who forged your signature.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Because he was staring at the hospital door.
The door was slowly opening.
May you like
And standing outside was the one person nobody expected to see.
Olivia.
