Chapter 5 - The Letter She Never Sent

Daniel stared at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Not Olivia’s.
Not Rachel’s.
Mine.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
Because Daniel had seen it hundreds of times.
On birthday cards.
On notes left on the kitchen counter.
On grocery lists stuck to the refrigerator.
My handwriting.
His fingers hovered above the envelope.
For a moment, he couldn’t open it.
The woman standing across from him watched silently.
Rachel Carter.
My mother.
A woman Daniel had only met twice during our marriage.
Both times had been uncomfortable.
Not because she disliked him.
Because she saw through him.
She had always been able to tell when someone was hiding something.
And now she was standing in front of him with a letter I had never given him.
“Where did you get this?”
Daniel finally asked.
Rachel’s expression didn’t change.
“From my daughter.”
Daniel looked confused.
“She gave this to you?”
“No.”
Rachel looked toward the hospital window.
“She wrote it for you.”
His heartbeat changed.
“When?”
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
“Six months ago.”
Daniel felt the room spin slightly.
Six months.
The same time he left.
The same time everything fell apart.
“She wrote me a letter?”
Rachel nodded.
“She planned to send it.”
“Then why didn’t she?”
Rachel looked directly at him.
“Because Olivia convinced her not to.”
The silence was instant.
Daniel’s eyes moved toward Olivia.
Olivia looked away.
And that was enough.
“You knew about this?”
Olivia didn’t respond.
“Olivia.”
Her lips trembled.
“I didn’t want you to see it.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?”
Because he already knew the answer.
The letter contained something Olivia didn’t want him to know.
Something that could destroy the story she created.
“I asked you a question.”
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I knew you would leave me.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“You mean you knew the truth would make me leave.”
Nobody answered.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Open the letter.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What’s inside?”
“The truth.”
A simple answer.
But it carried the weight of everything that had happened.
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
The edges were worn.
Like someone had held it many times.
Like someone had almost sent it.
He unfolded it.
And the first line immediately broke something inside him.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I finally found the courage to tell you.
His breathing became uneven.
He continued.
I’m pregnant.
Daniel stopped.
The words were only two words.
But they changed everything.
He closed his eyes.
For a second, he was no longer standing in that apartment.
He was back in their old home.
Back before the divorce.
Back before Olivia.
Back before he destroyed everything.
He kept reading.
I wanted to tell you the moment I found out. I wanted to hear your voice. I wanted you to be the first person I told.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
But I was scared.
Because I didn’t know if you would come back because you loved me, or because you felt responsible.
Daniel swallowed.
That sentence hurt.
Because he knew her.
He knew exactly why she wrote it.
She never wanted pity.
She wanted him to choose her.
I heard what people said about me.
I heard what Olivia told you.
I heard that you thought I was trying to control your life.
That I was holding you back.
Daniel looked up.
Olivia’s face had gone pale.
Rachel watched him carefully.
The letter continued.
But the truth is, Daniel, I never wanted to hold you back.
I wanted to build something with you.
I wanted our family.
I wanted our baby to know both parents loved her.
Daniel stopped reading.
His eyes burned.
Emma.
Their daughter.
The baby he should have known from the beginning.
The baby whose first heartbeat he missed.
The first ultrasound.
The first kick.
The birth.
Everything.
He kept reading.
Then Olivia found out.
Daniel froze.
His eyes moved across the page faster.
She told me you already made your choice.
She told me you were going to marry her.
She told me you didn’t want a child that would remind you of a marriage you had already left behind.
Daniel looked up.
“No.”
His voice was barely audible.
Olivia looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
He held the letter.
“She told you that?”
Olivia said nothing.
“She told you I didn’t want my own child?”
Still nothing.
And that silence was louder than a confession.
Daniel looked back at the letter.
The final lines were written differently.
The handwriting was messier.
Like I had cried while writing them.
I don’t hate you.
I wish I could.
It would be easier.
But I still love you.
That is why I have to let you go.
Because our daughter deserves a father who chooses her.
Not one who stays because someone forced him to.
Daniel couldn’t continue.
He lowered the letter.
The room was silent.
Rachel looked away.
Even she seemed affected.
Daniel had no defense.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Only regret.
“I never saw this.”
His voice broke.
“I never knew.”
Rachel looked at him.
“No.”
Her tone was calm.
“You didn’t.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“You stopped me from knowing.”
Olivia wiped her tears.
“I loved you.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You loved controlling the outcome.”
That hurt her.
He saw it.
But he couldn’t stop.
Not anymore.
Because for months, everyone had protected Olivia’s feelings.
Everyone had protected Daniel from the truth.
And nobody had protected me.
Nobody had protected Emma.
“I need to see her.”
Rachel nodded.
“You should.”
Daniel moved toward the door.
Then stopped.
“One question.”
Everyone looked at him.
He turned to Olivia.
“When did you know Emma was born?”
Olivia’s face changed.
Daniel saw it.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The guilt.
“Answer me.”
She whispered:
“The day she was born.”
Daniel froze.
The day Emma was born.
The day he was celebrating his engagement with Olivia.
The day he thought he was beginning a new life.
While his daughter entered the world without him.
“You knew for two days.”
Olivia started crying.
“I was going to tell you.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“You were going to decide if I deserved to know.”
Before Olivia could answer, Rachel’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“Who is it?”
Daniel asked.
Rachel didn’t answer.
She stared at the name.
Then slowly lifted her eyes.
“It’s the hospital.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emma?”
Rachel answered.
The voice on the other end was rushed.
Confused.
Afraid.
Rachel’s expression became serious.
“What do you mean someone took the baby’s records?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Rachel ended the call.
She looked at him.
Then at Olivia.
Then at Marcus.
And whispered:
“Someone has been trying to erase Emma’s existence.”
Daniel’s phone suddenly vibrated.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One photo.
Daniel opened it.
And his blood ran cold.
It was a picture taken inside the hospital room.
A picture of Emma.
May you like
Taken only minutes earlier.
And behind the baby’s crib stood someone who was not supposed to be there.
