Chapter 1 - The Call That Changed Everything

A newborn baby cried in a hospital room as a woman whispered:
“Please don’t leave me alone again.”
When Daniel Whitmore arrived at the hospital, he found a wedding invitation beside my bed that he had never seen before.
But written on the back of the envelope were three words:
“Your daughter’s name.”
Daniel suddenly realized this wasn’t the visit he expected.
I stared at the phone screen for almost ten seconds before I answered.
I already knew the number.
There were some numbers a person could never forget, no matter how much time passed.
Daniel Whitmore.
My ex-husband.
The man who once promised he would never let go of my hand.
The man who let go anyway.
“Hello?”
My voice sounded weaker than I expected.
Maybe because I had spent the last fourteen hours in a hospital bed.
Maybe because my entire world had changed two days earlier when a tiny baby girl was placed into my arms.
Or maybe because hearing his voice again reminded me of everything I had tried so hard to bury.
There was silence on the other end.
Then he spoke.
“Come to my wedding.”
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I wondered if I had heard him wrong.
“Your what?”
“My wedding.”
The words landed harder than any insult he had ever thrown at me.
I looked down at the baby sleeping against my chest.
Her tiny fingers were wrapped around mine.
She had no idea that the man on the phone was her father.
She had no idea that the person who should have been standing beside me was preparing to marry someone else.
“Daniel…”
I struggled to find the right words.
“You’re calling me from your wedding planning?”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I’m calling because I want you there.”
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
Six months earlier, Daniel had walked out of our apartment with a suitcase in his hand.
He had looked at me like I was the reason everything in his life had gone wrong.
He told me he needed a fresh start.
He told me he needed someone who understood his ambition.
Someone who didn’t hold him back.
Someone like Olivia.
His assistant.
The woman who had been waiting in the background while our marriage collapsed.
And now he wanted me to attend his wedding.
“Why?”
I asked.
A simple question.
But it carried every wound I had never been able to say out loud.
“Why do you want me there?”
Another pause.
Then he answered.
“I think you should see that I’m happy.”
My grip tightened around my daughter.
There it was.
The real reason.
He wasn’t inviting me because he missed me.
He wasn’t inviting me because he regretted leaving.
He wanted me to watch him move on.
He wanted me to see the life he had chosen without me.
“Daniel, I’m in the hospital.”
The silence that followed was different.
“What?”
“I had a baby.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
I waited.
I waited for the question.
I waited for the concern.
I waited for the man I married to appear again.
But all I heard was breathing.
“You had a baby?”
“Yes.”
“With who?”
The question cut deeper than he realized.
I looked at the little girl sleeping peacefully in my arms.
A baby with his eyes.
His nose.
His stubborn little frown whenever she moved in her sleep.
A baby who had his blood running through her veins.
“With someone who loved her before she was even born.”
I ended the call.
I thought that would be the end.
I thought Daniel Whitmore would return to his perfect wedding.
I thought I would return to my quiet life as a single mother.
I was wrong.
Three hours later, the hospital receptionist called my room.
“Ms. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“There is a visitor asking for you.”
My heart stopped.
I already knew.
“Who?”
The receptionist hesitated.
Then she said his name.
“Daniel Whitmore.”
I looked at my daughter.
The baby opened her eyes slowly.
Those tiny eyes looked up at me.
And for the first time since she was born, I felt afraid.
Because I had spent months preparing myself to raise her alone.
But I had never prepared myself for the moment her father would finally come back.
The door opened.
Daniel stood there.
Not in casual clothes.
Not looking like a man visiting an old friend.
He was wearing a black tuxedo.
The same tuxedo he planned to wear when he married another woman.
His expression was confident for only a second.
Then he saw the baby.
Everything changed.
His eyes moved from my face to the child in my arms.
The color disappeared from his face.
“You…”
His voice cracked.
“You said you had a baby.”
I didn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
Slowly.
Like he was afraid the truth would disappear if he moved too quickly.
The room became completely silent.
Then his eyes stopped on the hospital bracelet around my daughter’s tiny wrist.
He read the name.
And he froze.
Because it wasn’t a random name.
It was the name I had chosen before she was born.
The name we once talked about when we still believed we had a future together.
“Emma…”
He whispered.
I looked away.
Daniel’s breathing became heavier.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“No, that’s not possible.”
I said nothing.
Because I knew what was coming.
I knew the exact moment the truth would hit him.
He looked at me.
Then at the baby.
Then back at me.
“Is she…”
His voice disappeared.
I didn’t need him to finish.
The answer was already in his eyes.
The man who had walked away from me.
The man who had chosen another woman.
The man who had invited me to his wedding to prove he had won.
Was standing in my hospital room realizing he had left behind something he could never get back.
“She’s yours, Daniel.”
He stepped backward.
Like the words physically pushed him away.
“My daughter?”
I nodded.
For the first time since he entered the room, Daniel looked broken.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Broken.
But before he could say anything else, my phone vibrated on the bed.
A message appeared.
From Olivia.
His future wife.
I looked at the screen.
And my heart sank.
Because the message contained only one sentence.
“Daniel can never know what I did before the wedding.”
May you like
I slowly turned the phone toward him.
And Daniel saw the name on the screen.
