Chapter 3 - The Truth Olivia Buried

I stared at the photo on Daniel’s phone.
Olivia.
Standing outside a private medical clinic.
Her hand resting over her stomach.
A smile on her face.
A smile I had never seen when she talked about me.
A smile that made my chest tighten.
Because I understood something in that moment.
This wasn’t about jealousy.
This wasn’t about revenge.
This was about a truth that had been hidden from everyone.
Especially Daniel.
“Who sent this?”
My voice sounded distant.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He kept looking at the screen like he was waiting for the image to change.
Like he was hoping it was fake.
Like he was hoping the woman he was about to marry had not spent months lying to him.
“I don’t know.”
He finally spoke.
His voice was low.
“But I’m going to find out.”
I looked at him.
The old version of Daniel would have walked away.
He would have found a reason.
An explanation.
Someone else to blame.
But this time, something was different.
This time, he was afraid.
And fear had a way of forcing people to see what they refused to see before.
“Daniel.”
He looked at me.
“Don’t do this because you feel guilty.”
His expression changed.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
I looked down at Emma.
“She is your daughter. I know that changes things. But don’t pretend you’re here because you suddenly realized you loved me.”
The words hurt.
I knew they did.
But they were true.
Daniel swallowed.
“I don’t know what I feel anymore.”
That answer surprised me.
Because for the first time, he wasn’t pretending.
“I thought I knew everything.”
He sat back down.
“I thought I knew why our marriage ended. I thought I knew why you stopped fighting.”
His eyes moved toward Emma.
“But I was wrong.”
I stayed silent.
Because I didn’t know what to do with the apology I had wanted for so long.
An apology was easy.
Changing the past was impossible.
A nurse entered the room quietly.
She smiled at me.
“Everything okay?”
I looked at Daniel.
A man in a wedding tuxedo.
Sitting beside my hospital bed.
Looking at the baby he didn’t know existed.
“No.”
I answered honestly.
“Nothing is okay.”
The nurse looked between us.
Then at Emma.
She seemed to understand more than she asked.
“I’ll give you some privacy.”
When she left, Daniel stood up.
“I need to talk to Olivia.”
I nodded.
“Then talk to her.”
He walked toward the door.
But before he left, he stopped.
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
Not because I didn’t hear him.
Because I had waited too long to hear those words.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”
His voice cracked.
“I’m sorry I let someone else convince me that losing you was easier than fighting for you.”
I looked away.
Because a part of me wanted to believe him.
And another part remembered every lonely night.
Every doctor appointment I attended alone.
Every moment I wished he knew his daughter was growing inside me.
“I hope you mean that.”
He nodded.
Then he left.
For the first time in months, I watched Daniel walk away.
And I didn’t feel abandoned.
I felt uncertain.
That was somehow worse.
Because hope was more dangerous than anger.
Daniel didn’t go to the wedding venue.
He went straight to the apartment he shared with Olivia.
The same apartment where they had chosen furniture.
The same apartment where they had planned their future.
The same apartment where Olivia had apparently been hiding another life.
When he opened the door, she was standing inside.
Waiting.
Like she already knew.
“You went to see her.”
Daniel closed the door behind him.
“Yes.”
Olivia’s expression changed slightly.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You saw the baby.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew.”
Silence.
That was all the confirmation he needed.
“You knew she was pregnant.”
Olivia looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice was sharper than before.
“You don’t get to explain this like it’s a misunderstanding.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect us.”
“Protect us?”
He laughed once.
A painful sound.
“You destroyed my life and called it protection?”
Olivia walked closer.
“Do you know what would have happened if you found out?”
“I would have known my daughter existed.”
She stopped.
The word hit her.
Daughter.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
Her lips trembled.
“Of losing you.”
Daniel stared at her.
“So you let me lose her?”
Olivia said nothing.
And that silence told him everything.
“How long have you known?”
She looked down.
“Since before the divorce was final.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“I found out because I saw her medical records.”
His face changed.
“You went through her things?”
“I was scared.”
“You were obsessed.”
The accusation hurt.
Because it was true.
Olivia had always presented herself as the woman who saved Daniel.
The woman who understood him.
The woman who loved him.
But now Daniel was seeing something else.
A person who controlled information.
A person who decided what he deserved to know.
“What else have you hidden from me?”
Olivia’s face became pale.
“Nothing.”
Too fast.
Too defensive.
Daniel noticed.
“Tell me the truth.”
“I am.”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“You’re telling me the version that keeps you safe.”
Olivia looked away.
And that was when Daniel saw it.
A small envelope on the kitchen counter.
His name written on it.
He walked toward it.
Olivia immediately moved.
“Don’t.”
Daniel stopped.
The word was enough.
“What is that?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why don’t you want me to see it?”
She reached for the envelope.
Daniel grabbed it first.
His hands shook slightly as he opened it.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
A hospital receipt.
And one page that made his entire body go still.
A pregnancy report.
But the date was wrong.
The baby Olivia claimed was his…
Had been conceived before they ever met.
Daniel looked up slowly.
“Olivia.”
She didn’t answer.
“Whose child is this?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
And for the first time since he knew her…
She looked genuinely afraid.
“Daniel, please.”
He looked back at the paper.
Then at her.
“Whose child is this?”
She opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, the apartment door suddenly unlocked.
Both of them turned.
Someone was standing outside.
Someone who should not have been there.
Then a man’s voice came from the hallway.
“Olivia.”
Daniel looked at her.
Because he recognized the voice.
It belonged to someone he knew.
Someone who had been at their wedding rehearsal.
Someone who had congratulated him on finding happiness.
May you like
The door opened.
And Daniel saw who had been hiding behind the secret.
