Chapter 4 - The Man Behind The Lie

Daniel stared at the man standing in the doorway.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The apartment felt frozen.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing.

The secret Olivia had protected for months was no longer hidden.

The man standing there was Marcus Hale.

Daniel’s former business partner.

His closest friend.

The person who had stood beside him during his divorce.

The person who had told him:

“You’re making the right choice. Some people are just not meant to stay together.”

Daniel remembered those words.

And suddenly, they sounded different.

“You.”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Not guilty.

Not yet.

Just uncomfortable.

“Daniel.”

That one word was enough.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What are you doing here?”

Marcus looked at Olivia.

And that was when Daniel saw it.

The way they looked at each other.

A second too long.

A second too familiar.

His stomach tightened.

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No, don’t do that.”

Olivia stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen.”

“No.”

His voice became louder.

“I’m done listening to explanations.”

Marcus entered slowly and closed the door behind him.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.”

Daniel laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“You didn’t want me to find out?”

He held up the pregnancy documents.

“You knew.”

Marcus looked at the papers.

Then looked away.

That was the answer.

Daniel felt something inside him break.

Not because Olivia had betrayed him.

He already knew that.

But because Marcus had.

A friend.

Someone he trusted.

Someone he defended.

Someone he never suspected.

“How long?”

Marcus stayed silent.

“How long have you two been hiding this from me?”

Olivia wiped her tears.

“Daniel…”

“How long?”

Marcus finally spoke.

“Almost a year.”

The room went quiet.

Daniel stepped back.

Almost a year.

That meant everything.

The divorce.

The wedding plans.

The nights Marcus had sat with him and told him he deserved happiness.

All of it.

A lie.

“You were the person I talked to.”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You knew I was falling apart.”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“You watched me blame myself.”

“I know.”

“You watched me think my marriage failed because I wasn’t enough.”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“And you.”

His voice became softer.

Almost worse.

“You let me hate her.”

Olivia’s face changed.

“She was going to leave you anyway.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Olivia swallowed.

“She was already unhappy. She didn’t want that life anymore.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s what you told me.”

“Yes.”

“And you expected me to believe that?”

Olivia looked away.

“I thought it was better.”

“For who?”

No answer.

Daniel walked toward the kitchen counter and placed the documents down.

His hands were shaking.

“I spent six months thinking I destroyed my own family.”

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was the reason everything ended.”

He looked at Marcus.

“But you knew.”

Marcus finally looked up.

“I was scared.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Scared?”

“Yes.”

“Of what?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said:

“Of losing Olivia.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because it meant Marcus knew exactly what he was doing.

He wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t manipulated.

He chose.

“You weren’t my friend.”

Marcus looked down.

“I was.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You were someone standing close enough to watch me fall.”

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was the hospital.

His face changed.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?”

A nurse’s voice came through.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“We need you to return to the hospital.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Why? Is Emma okay?”

A pause.

Then the nurse lowered her voice.

“There is someone here asking for you.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

The nurse hesitated.

“She says she is Emma’s grandmother.”

Daniel froze.

“My daughter’s grandmother?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the documents.

Toward Olivia.

Toward Marcus.

Something cold moved through him.

Because Emma’s mother had never told him anything.

Not about the pregnancy.

Not about the birth.

Not about her family.

Nothing.

“Did she give a name?”

Another pause.

Then the nurse answered.

“Rachel Carter.”

Daniel went completely still.

Rachel Carter.

He knew that name.

Everyone in Chicago’s business world knew that name.

Rachel Carter was the woman who had built one of the biggest real estate companies in the city.

Powerful.

Private.

Impossible to reach.

And she was my mother.

Daniel ended the call.

Marcus noticed his expression.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at him.

“My daughter’s grandmother is at the hospital.”

Olivia’s face suddenly changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Real fear.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are you afraid?”

Olivia didn’t answer.

“Olivia.”

She stepped back.

“I didn’t know she would come.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus immediately looked at Olivia.

“You didn’t tell him?”

Daniel’s eyes moved between them.

“Tell me what?”

Nobody spoke.

And that silence was worse than any confession.

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going to the hospital.”

Olivia moved toward him.

“No.”

He stopped.

The word surprised him.

“No?”

Her eyes filled with panic.

“You can’t go there yet.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

Olivia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Because Rachel Carter knows the truth.”

Daniel turned.

“What truth?”

Marcus looked at Olivia.

Then back at Daniel.

“The truth about why your divorce happened.”

Daniel felt his heartbeat slow.

“What are you talking about?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because the apartment door suddenly opened again.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Cold.

Her eyes went directly to Daniel.

Then to the documents on the table.

Then to Olivia.

“You weren’t supposed to tell him.”

Olivia’s face went pale.

Daniel looked at the woman.

And immediately understood.

This was not a hospital visit.

This was a warning.

The woman stepped inside and closed the door.

Then she said one sentence.

“Daniel Whitmore, you need to know what your wife discovered before she disappeared.”

Daniel froze.

Because the woman was not talking about Olivia.

She was talking about me.

May you like

And before Daniel could ask what she meant, she placed a small envelope on the table.

An envelope with my name written across the front.
