Chapter 6 - The Room That Held My Father’s Last Secret

The office door was still open.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone in the room knew one thing.
That door had been locked for twenty years.
Adrian walked toward it slowly.
The security team followed behind him.
"Stay back," he said.
Nobody argued.
Not even Victoria.
I stood there holding the envelope with my name on it.
My hands were still shaking.
The voice from inside came again.
"Mara..."
This time, I recognized something.
Not the voice.
The feeling.
Like I had heard it before.
Like my body remembered something my mind refused to.
Elena grabbed my arm.
"No."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"You cannot go in there."
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Because the last time you entered that room..."
She stopped.
I waited.
"The last time you entered that room, your father died."
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Adrian turned around.
"What did you say?"
Elena looked at him.
"I told you."
"You never told me she was there."
"I was trying to protect her."
"From me?"
"No."
She looked toward the office.
"From the truth."
Adrian stared at the doorway.
Then he walked inside.
I followed.
"Mara."
His voice stopped me.
I looked at him.
For a second, I thought he would order me to stay outside.
But he didn't.
He just said:
"Be careful."
I stepped into Richard Vale's office.
The room smelled old.
Like nobody had been there for years.
The furniture was covered with white sheets.
The walls held photographs.
Awards.
Memories.
A life frozen in time.
But something was wrong.
The room didn't look abandoned.
It looked prepared.
A glass of water sat on the desk.
A chair was slightly moved.
A lamp was still connected.
Someone had been here recently.
Adrian noticed too.
"Someone has been inside."
The guards began searching.
I walked toward the desk.
Something pulled me there.
I didn't know why.
My fingers touched the wooden surface.
And another memory came.
A little girl's voice.
My voice.
"Promise me, Daddy."
I closed my eyes.
The room disappeared.
I saw a child sitting on this exact chair.
Small hands holding a piece of paper.
A man kneeling in front of her.
Richard.
My father.
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Terrified.
"You have to remember this, Mara."
Little me was crying.
"Why?"
"Because one day someone will tell you I was a bad man."
The child shook her head.
"No."
Richard touched her face.
"Promise me you won't believe everything they say."
The memory disappeared.
I opened my eyes.
Adrian was standing in front of me.
"You remembered something."
I looked away.
"Yes."
"What?"
I didn't answer immediately.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
"My father was afraid."
Adrian froze.
"Afraid of what?"
I looked around the room.
"Someone."
A sound came from behind the bookshelf.
Everyone turned.
The guards moved immediately.
Adrian raised his hand.
The room became silent.
Then he walked toward the bookshelf.
There was a small opening behind it.
A hidden compartment.
My heart started racing.
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a small black box.
Nothing else.
He brought it to the desk.
There was no lock.
Just a fingerprint scanner.
He tried his own.
Nothing happened.
Victoria tried.
Nothing.
Elena stepped forward.
Adrian stopped her.
"Don't."
She looked hurt.
"Why?"
"Because if this is my father's..."
He looked at me.
"Maybe it was meant for her."
Everyone looked at me.
I didn't want to.
But I knew.
I placed my hand on the scanner.
The box opened.
Nobody spoke.
Inside was a single file.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
My stomach dropped.
It was me.
Not as a child.
As an adult.
Taken recently.
I was standing outside the nightclub.
The same night I met Victoria.
Someone had been watching me.
For a long time.
Beneath the photograph was a note.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
My father's.
Mara, if you are reading this, they failed to keep you hidden.
I stopped.
Adrian moved closer.
"What does it say?"
I continued.
The first person you must never trust is the person who tells you they are protecting you.
My eyes moved to Adrian.
He noticed.
His expression changed.
But I kept reading.
The second person you must never trust is the person who claims they know the truth about your past.
I looked at Elena.
Her face went pale.
There was more.
The person who destroyed our family is not outside the walls.
A pause.
They are standing close enough to hear your heartbeat.
Nobody moved.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Victoria whispered:
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
I opened the file.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Names.
Dates.
And one document that made my blood run cold.
A birth certificate.
Mine.
But there was something wrong.
The father's name was not Richard Vale.
It was blank.
Completely erased.
I stared at it.
"Why?"
Adrian took the document.
His face changed.
"What?"
I pointed.
"My father's name."
He looked.
Nothing.
Someone had removed it.
Not accidentally.
Carefully.
Victoria looked confused.
"But you grew up as a Vale."
I looked at Elena.
She was crying.
"Mom."
She looked at me.
"I need the truth."
She closed her eyes.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"When it was safe."
I laughed quietly.
"Was it ever safe?"
She had no answer.
Adrian picked up another document.
His expression became colder.
"Mara."
I looked at him.
"This isn't just about your family."
"What is it?"
He turned the paper toward me.
It was a company record.
A hidden account.
A payment made twenty years ago.
The recipient's name was visible.
My name.
Mara Hayes.
My stomach dropped.
"Why would someone pay me?"
Adrian looked at the date.
"The day after your father died."
The room went silent.
I stared at the number.
It wasn't a salary.
It wasn't an inheritance.
It was a payment for something.
Something someone wanted hidden.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The security cameras went black.
Adrian immediately reached for his phone.
"No signal."
The guards checked their radios.
Nothing.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
A man stood outside the office.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
I had never seen him before.
But Adrian had.
His face changed instantly.
"Impossible."
The man smiled.
"Hello, Adrian."
Nobody moved.
The man looked at me.
And said:
"You look exactly like your father."
Adrian stepped in front of me.
"How are you alive?"
The man ignored him.
He only looked at me.
Then he spoke the words that made Elena collapse.
"Mara, your father didn't die."
A pause.
"He escaped."
The man reached into his coat.
Pulled out a photograph.
And placed it on the floor.
May you like
A photograph of Richard Vale.
Taken yesterday.
