Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Inside the Necklace

The phone rang in Adrian Vale’s hand.
I watched his face change when he saw the name: "Daniel."
Victoria stopped breathing.
"Who is it?" I asked.
Adrian didn't answer.
He stared at the screen like the past had just walked back into his life.
Then he rejected the call.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The rain continued falling around us.
The city continued moving.
But the three of us stood frozen outside the nightclub.
Finally, Adrian took the necklace from my hand.
His fingers tightened around it.
"Where exactly did you find this?"
I pointed toward the sidewalk.
"Near her purse."
He looked at Victoria.
"Why was it there?"
She looked away.
"I don't know."
That answer made his expression harden.
Victoria was drunk.
She was emotional.
But she wasn't confused.
Not anymore.
I could see it.
She knew something.
Something she didn't want him to know.
Adrian stepped closer to her.
"Victoria."
She flinched.
Not because he was loud.
Because he wasn't.
People like Adrian didn't need to raise their voices.
Everyone already listened.
"Tell me the truth."
Victoria looked at me.
For a second, I felt like I wasn't supposed to be standing there.
Like I had accidentally walked into a family secret that had nothing to do with me.
"I should go," I said.
But Adrian stopped me.
"No."
I looked at him.
"No?"
"You found this."
He held up the necklace.
"And whatever happened tonight started with this."
I didn't understand.
A necklace was a necklace.
But the way he looked at it told me it wasn't.
"What is it?"
Neither of them answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Adrian opened the necklace.
I hadn't noticed before.
The silver pendant had a tiny hidden compartment.
Inside was a small folded piece of paper.
My heart stopped.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
"Adrian, don't."
His eyes moved to her.
"Don't what?"
She said nothing.
Slowly, he unfolded the paper.
The rain touched the edges.
The ink was old.
Faded.
But still readable.
Only four words were written.
"Trust the waitress."
I stared.
My stomach dropped.
Because there was only one waitress standing there.
Me.
Adrian looked at me.
Victoria looked at me.
And suddenly I felt like I had become part of a story that started long before tonight.
"I don't understand," I whispered.
Adrian didn't look away.
"Neither do I."
Victoria grabbed his arm.
"Please."
He turned toward her.
"How long have you known?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Since yesterday."
"Since yesterday?"
"I found it in father's old office."
Adrian became completely still.
Their father.
Richard Vale.
The man whose name appeared on every building downtown.
The man who had died three years ago.
The man everyone believed had left behind a perfect family.
A perfect company.
A perfect legacy.
But standing there, I realized perfect was usually just another word people used when they didn't know the truth.
Adrian looked back at the paper.
"Why would he write this?"
Victoria shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Then why hide it from me?"
"Because I knew what you would do."
"What would I do?"
She looked at him.
"You would destroy everything."
The silence between them was heavy.
I stepped back.
This was not my world.
I was a waitress.
I carried drinks.
I cleaned tables.
I didn't solve mysteries involving billionaire families.
But Adrian looked at me again.
And something in his eyes changed.
Not suspicion.
Not anger.
Fear.
"Mara."
I looked at him.
"How long have you worked at the nightclub?"
"Almost two years."
"Before that?"
I hesitated.
"Why?"
"Answer me."
I swallowed.
"I worked at a small restaurant."
"Which one?"
I told him.
His expression changed.
Again.
Like every answer I gave created another question.
"What?"
He looked at Victoria.
"She doesn't know."
Victoria whispered.
"Know what?"
Adrian ignored her.
"When did you leave?"
"Three years ago."
His eyes narrowed.
"Exactly when?"
I felt uncomfortable.
"Why does that matter?"
Because he didn't answer.
And I already knew.
The answer mattered.
A lot.
The rain became heavier.
Adrian walked toward the car.
"Get inside."
I laughed softly.
"Excuse me?"
"You're coming with us."
"No."
His security team nearby looked surprised.
Maybe nobody said no to Adrian Vale.
But I wasn't nobody.
"I don't know what game this is, but I didn't do anything."
His face softened slightly.
"I know."
"Then why am I coming?"
"Because someone wanted you to find that necklace."
I looked at the pendant.
"No."
"Yes."
"You think someone planned this?"
"I know someone planned this."
The confidence in his voice scared me.
Victoria stepped closer.
"Mara."
I looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words confused me.
She had nothing to apologize for.
But she looked genuinely afraid.
"Why are you saying sorry?"
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Like she almost told me something.
But couldn't.
Adrian noticed.
"Not here."
Victoria looked down.
And that was when I realized something.
She wasn't just hiding a secret.
She was protecting someone.
The drive to Adrian's house was silent.
I sat in the back of the black car beside Victoria.
She looked completely different from the woman who had laughed when my tray fell.
The expensive dress.
The jewelry.
The perfect image.
All of it disappeared.
She looked like a scared young woman.
"Who was Daniel?" I asked quietly.
Victoria looked at me.
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"My father's lawyer."
"Why did Adrian react like that?"
She looked outside the window.
"Because Daniel was the last person who saw my mother alive."
I froze.
"Your mother died."
Victoria nodded.
"Everyone thinks so."
Everyone.
That word stayed in my mind.
"Do you not think so?"
She didn't answer.
The car stopped.
Adrian's mansion appeared ahead.
I had seen pictures of places like this.
But pictures didn't show how cold they felt.
Too large.
Too quiet.
Too empty.
Inside, Adrian placed the necklace on the table.
Several people entered the room.
Security.
Lawyers.
People who looked like they had spent their entire lives protecting secrets.
Then Adrian turned to me.
"I need you to tell me everything about tonight."
I told him.
Every detail.
The broken glasses.
Victoria leaving.
The necklace.
The note.
When I finished, nobody spoke.
Then an older man entered the room.
He carried a folder.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian looked at him.
"What?"
The man looked nervous.
"I found something in the security footage."
Adrian stepped forward.
"What?"
The man opened the folder.
"There was another person at the nightclub tonight."
My heart sank.
"Who?"
The man looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
"Someone who followed Miss Vale."
Adrian's face darkened.
"Show me."
The security footage appeared on the screen.
The nightclub entrance.
The rain.
Victoria leaving.
Me following her.
Then...
A shadow appeared behind us.
Someone watching.
Someone waiting.
Adrian leaned closer.
"Zoom in."
The image became clearer.
The person was wearing a black coat.
Their face was hidden.
But one thing was visible.
A small mark on their hand.
A tattoo.
Adrian stopped moving.
Because he recognized it.
"What is it?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then the man with the folder whispered:
"Mr. Vale..."
Adrian looked at him.
"The person in the footage wasn't following Miss Victoria."
A cold feeling moved through my body.
The man continued.
"They were following Mara."
I looked at Adrian.
He looked back at me.
And for the first time since I met him...
He looked afraid.
Then the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
A second later, Adrian's phone received a message.
One sentence.
One name.
May you like
My name.
Mara Hayes is not who you think she is.
