Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Final Lie

Richard Vale looked directly into the camera.
My father.
Alive.
After twenty years.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound in the room was the faint buzzing of the monitor.
Then Adrian stepped closer.
"Where is this coming from?"
The security team checked the system.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was staring at the same thing.
Richard.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
He looked at me through the screen.
"Mara."
My heart broke.
Because I remembered that voice.
Not from memories.
Not from recordings.
From before.
Before everything disappeared.
"Mara, listen to me."
I stepped closer.
The man on the screen looked nothing like the powerful businessman from the photographs.
He looked like a father.
A father who had lost twenty years.
"I know you have questions."
I whispered:
"Yes."
My voice cracked.
"I have twenty years of them."
Richard looked down.
For a second, he looked ashamed.
"I know."
The room stayed silent.
Then he said:
"The first thing you need to understand is this."
A pause.
"Everyone who told you they were protecting you was telling the truth."
I froze.
"But they were also hiding something."
My eyes moved to Adrian.
Then Elena.
Then Thomas.
Richard continued.
"Nobody in that room has the full story."
Adrian stepped toward the monitor.
"Father."
Richard looked at him.
And the emotion between them was impossible to describe.
Twenty years of anger.
Twenty years of grief.
Twenty years of questions.
"You grew up hating me."
Adrian said nothing.
"You believed I chose my empire over you."
A pause.
"I didn't."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Then why didn't you come back?"
The question came quietly.
But everyone heard it.
Richard closed his eyes.
"Because coming back would have killed you."
Adrian looked away.
Richard continued.
"Victor didn't just want my company."
The screen flickered.
"He wanted my family."
Thomas stepped closer.
"Where are you?"
Richard ignored him.
"Mara, I need you to remember something."
I felt my body tense.
"Your memory was changed."
I swallowed.
"I know."
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"You don't."
The room went silent.
"The memory you recovered was only what someone wanted you to see."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard looked at the camera.
"It means the night I disappeared..."
A pause.
"You were not the only child in that room."
My blood went cold.
"What?"
Adrian looked confused.
"What are you talking about?"
Richard continued.
"Victor brought someone with him."
"Who?"
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Someone who knew how to make you forget."
A chill ran through me.
Because suddenly I remembered something else.
A voice.
A different voice.
A woman whispering.
A hand touching my head.
"You'll forget this."
I stepped back.
Elena noticed.
"Mara?"
I looked at her.
"You were there."
She froze.
"No."
"You were."
My breathing became faster.
"You touched my head."
Elena's face changed.
Not fear.
Pain.
"I was trying to calm you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You weren't alone."
The room became silent.
Richard watched me.
Like he knew I was getting closer.
"Mara."
I looked at the screen.
"Tell me."
His expression changed.
"Tell me what?"
"The truth."
I stepped closer.
"Who else was there?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because my father had always been the person who knew everything.
But now...
He looked afraid.
Finally, he spoke.
"Your brother."
Nobody moved.
The words didn't make sense.
"My what?"
Richard looked at me.
"You had a brother."
The room exploded into silence.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Adrian stared.
Elena began crying.
"No."
I looked at her.
"You knew?"
She shook her head quickly.
"No."
Richard continued.
"He was six years old."
I felt dizzy.
"Where is he?"
Richard looked away.
That answer hurt more than any words.
"Where is my brother?"
A pause.
Then:
"Victor took him."
The room became colder.
Adrian looked at the screen.
"Why?"
"Because Victor knew I would do anything to get my son back."
I closed my eyes.
A memory appeared.
A boy.
A small hand holding mine.
A voice saying:
"Don't let them take me."
I opened my eyes.
I was crying.
"I remember."
Everyone looked at me.
"I remember him."
Elena came closer.
"Mara..."
"He was there."
My voice shook.
"He was hiding with me."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"Why didn't I remember?"
"Because someone made sure you wouldn't."
Thomas suddenly spoke.
"Victor."
Richard looked at him.
"Not just Victor."
Everyone turned.
Richard's face became serious.
"There was someone else."
Adrian frowned.
"Who?"
Richard looked directly at him.
"The person you trusted most."
The room went silent.
Again.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
Richard didn't look away.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Richard opened his mouth.
But the screen suddenly glitched.
The image distorted.
The connection began breaking.
"Mara."
I stepped forward.
"Don't go."
Richard looked at me.
And for the first time...
He looked like my father.
Not a businessman.
Not a legend.
Just my father.
"I'm sorry."
The screen flickered.
Then his final words came through.
"Adrian is not the person you should fear."
Everyone froze.
The screen went black.
Adrian immediately turned.
"What did he mean?"
Nobody answered.
Then every phone in the room received a notification.
One after another.
Mine.
Victoria's.
Elena's.
Adrian's.
A video file.
No sender.
No name.
Just one message:
You want the truth about Mara's brother? Watch this.
Adrian opened it.
The video began.
A dark room.
A chair.
A child sitting in it.
A boy.
My brother.
Alive.
Older.
Looking directly into the camera.
Then someone stepped behind him.
The person placed a hand on his shoulder.
And the boy whispered:
"I was told never to say her name..."
The camera moved closer.
The person's face slowly appeared.
May you like
And I recognized them.
Because they had been standing beside me the entire night.
