Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Golden House

The first thing Dominic Salvatore noticed when he arrived at Bellini Tower was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The dangerous kind.
The kind of silence that existed before something broke.
The building stood above Manhattan like a monument to wealth and influence. For decades, people had looked at the tower and seen success.
Power.
Stability.
But Dominic knew better.
Sometimes the tallest buildings were the ones with the deepest cracks.
He stepped out of the elevator alone.
Vincent remained behind him.
Emma walked beside them.
Dominic had told her to stay away.
She had ignored him.
He should have been angry.
Instead, he understood.
Some battles could not be watched from a distance.
Some truths demanded that the people who suffered from them stand there when they finally came into the light.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
Dominic stopped near the office doors.
No guards.
No employees.
Nothing.
That was wrong.
Anthony Bellini was not careless.
A man like Anthony always prepared.
Which meant he wanted them to come.
The door opened before Dominic touched it.
Anthony stood inside.
Holding a glass of whiskey.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Dominic.”
The old friend smiled.
“I wondered how long it would take.”
Dominic entered.
Emma followed.
Anthony’s eyes moved toward her.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“So you finally decided to stop hiding.”
Emma said nothing.
Anthony looked back at Dominic.
“You brought her here?”
“Yes.”
Anthony laughed quietly.
“That tells me everything.”
Dominic closed the door behind him.
“You know why I’m here.”
Anthony took a drink.
“I know you think you do.”
The response irritated Dominic.
For years, Anthony had spoken like that.
Like he was always five steps ahead.
Like everyone else was too slow to understand the game.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, Dominic was not the man trying to build an empire.
He was the man trying to discover who had destroyed his family.
“Twenty years ago,” Dominic said.
Anthony’s smile faded slightly.
“Careful.”
“No.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“I spent my entire life believing my father destroyed his own company.”
A pause.
“I believed he failed.”
Anthony looked away.
“And now?”
“Now I know he was betrayed.”
Silence.
The whiskey glass stopped halfway to Anthony’s mouth.
Only for a second.
But Dominic saw it.
“You always were observant.”
Anthony placed the glass down.
“That was your father’s weakness.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Explain.”
Anthony walked toward the window.
“Your father believed loyalty was everything.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“He believed people stayed because they cared.”
He looked back.
“That was his mistake.”
Emma watched him carefully.
“You never cared about him.”
Anthony looked at her.
“I cared enough.”
The answer made her angry.
“Enough to destroy him?”
Anthony’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
Emma stepped forward.
“No.”
Her voice became colder.
“I understand perfectly.”
“My mother found out what you were doing.”
Anthony did not respond.
“She tried to expose you.”
Still nothing.
“You ruined her life.”
A pause.
“You destroyed my family.”
Anthony looked at her.
“And you think Dominic is different?”
The room changed.
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Anthony smiled.
“There it is.”
He looked at Dominic.
“The question you should have asked years ago.”
Dominic remained silent.
Anthony continued.
“You built your empire using the same methods everyone else used.”
“That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
Anthony walked closer.
“How many people did you threaten?”
“How many businesses did you force out?”
“How many men disappeared because they challenged you?”
Dominic said nothing.
Because some accusations hurt more when they contained pieces of truth.
Anthony noticed.
“You’re not angry because I’m lying.”
A pause.
“You’re angry because you know I’m right.”
Emma looked at Dominic.
But Dominic did not move.
Because he understood something.
Anthony was trying to change the subject.
Trying to make him question himself.
But this was not about whether Dominic was perfect.
He was not.
This was about what Anthony had done.
“What happened to Laura Carter?”
Anthony’s expression became colder.
“That woman should have stayed quiet.”
Emma’s face changed.
The answer was enough.
“You admit it.”
Anthony looked at her.
“I admit she involved herself in things she did not understand.”
Dominic’s voice dropped.
“She was innocent.”
Anthony laughed.
“Innocent?”
He turned.
“Dominic, there is no such thing in our world.”
That sentence revealed everything.
Because Dominic finally saw the difference between them.
Anthony believed power gave him permission.
Dominic had spent years using power to protect.
But somewhere along the way, he had forgotten the difference.
A sound came from behind.
The office door opened.
Isabella entered.
Everyone turned.
She looked different.
The confidence was gone.
The expensive smile disappeared.
She looked tired.
Cornered.
“Dominic.”
Her voice was softer.
Almost desperate.
He looked at her.
For six years, he had loved this woman.
Or at least the person he believed she was.
Now he wondered if he had ever truly known her.
“You knew.”
Isabella stopped.
The words were enough.
She knew exactly what he meant.
“Dominic…”
“You knew what happened to Laura Carter.”
Her silence answered.
Emma closed her eyes.
Even after everything, hearing it directly hurt.
Dominic looked at Isabella.
“Why?”
A simple question.
The hardest one.
Isabella looked away.
“Because Anthony promised me protection.”
Dominic stared.
“Protection?”
She laughed sadly.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“I was nobody before you.”
Dominic said nothing.
“Anthony gave me a chance.”
Emma looked disgusted.
“A chance to destroy people?”
Isabella turned toward her.
“You think I wanted this?”
The anger returned.
“You think I woke up one day and decided I wanted power?”
She looked at Dominic.
“I was trying to survive.”
Dominic’s expression remained cold.
“By ruining innocent lives?”
Isabella had no answer.
And that was the answer.
A long silence followed.
Then Dominic spoke.
“You lied to me.”
Isabella looked at him.
“I loved you.”
The words hurt.
Because part of him believed she did.
But love without honesty was just another kind of betrayal.
“You loved what I gave you.”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
But her voice lacked confidence.
Dominic looked toward Anthony.
Then Isabella.
Two people who had shaped his life.
Two people who had hidden the truth.
He felt something inside him disappear.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Vincent’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Dominic.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
Vincent lowered the phone.
“The authorities are here.”
Anthony smiled.
For the first time that night, he looked confident again.
“You think you won?”
Dominic looked at him.
Anthony continued.
“You have evidence.”
A pause.
“But I have influence.”
He stepped closer.
“People like us don’t fall.”
Dominic stared at him.
Then he slowly reached into his jacket.
He removed the small recorder.
Anthony’s smile disappeared.
Dominic pressed a button.
Anthony’s own voice filled the room.
Every confession.
Every admission.
Every hidden truth.
The office became silent.
Because this time, Anthony could not manipulate the story.
He could not erase the evidence.
He could not control what happened next.
Dominic looked at him.
“You were right about one thing.”
Anthony stared.
Dominic continued.
“People like us do fall.”
A pause.
“When they forget they are human.”
Outside the office, footsteps approached.
The sound grew louder.
Anthony finally understood.
The game was over.
Emma stood quietly beside Dominic.
She had spent six years searching for justice.
Tonight, she finally found it.
But as Dominic looked at the people who betrayed him, he realized something.
Destroying an empire was easy.
May you like
Building something better afterward was the real challenge.
And that was the battle that waited next.
