Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Uniform

For the first time in years, Dominic Salvatore found himself interested in someone he had not invited into his world.

That alone was dangerous.

Dominic had survived because he understood people.

He knew when someone was lying.

He knew when someone was afraid.

He knew when someone wanted something from him.

Every person who entered his orbit carried a reason.

Money.

Protection.

Power.

Revenge.

Nobody simply appeared.

And yet Emma stood there in a black waitress uniform, surrounded by people who could destroy her life with a single phone call, and she looked like the only person in the room who had nothing to lose.

That bothered him.

More than anger ever could.

The private dining room remained frozen.

No one touched their wine.

No one continued their conversations.

The wealthy guests who had spent the evening discussing million-dollar investments now watched a different kind of negotiation.

One where a young waitress had walked into the lion’s den carrying a secret.

Dominic slowly looked back down at the document in front of him.

The numbers were clear.

The accounts were real.

The transfers were real.

And the connection was impossible to ignore.

Several offshore payments had been moved through companies that appeared legitimate on paper.

But Dominic had built his empire by understanding what existed beneath the surface.

A company could be fake.

A name could be fake.

A signature could be fake.

But money always told the truth.

His eyes lifted.

“Where did you get this?”

Emma remained standing.

“I already answered.”

Dominic’s expression did not change.

“No. You told me where you found it.”

A pause.

“I asked where you got the information.”

The room became quieter.

Emma studied him.

For a moment, Dominic thought she might avoid the question.

Instead, she slowly pulled out the chair across from him.

She did not ask permission.

That surprised everyone.

She sat down.

The waitress sat at the same table as Dominic Salvatore.

Several guests almost reacted.

One of Dominic’s men moved slightly.

Again, Dominic stopped him.

Not with words.

Just a look.

Emma folded her hands on the table.

“I spent six months watching this restaurant.”

Isabella immediately laughed.

A sharp, nervous laugh.

“Watching?”

She looked at Dominic.

“This is ridiculous. She is a waitress.”

Emma turned her attention toward Isabella.

“Yes.”

A small pause.

“That was the point.”

The words landed harder than shouting.

Dominic leaned back slightly.

“Explain.”

Emma looked toward the expensive dining room around them.

“The richest people in this city walk into places like this every night.”

She glanced at the guests.

“They think because they wear expensive watches and sit at private tables, nobody notices them.”

Her eyes returned to Dominic.

“They are wrong.”

Nobody spoke.

Emma continued.

“People talk when they think nobody important is listening.”

Her voice remained calm.

“Servers hear conversations. Bartenders hear secrets. Drivers hear phone calls. Assistants see documents.”

She looked at the document between them.

“Powerful people are usually destroyed by the things they consider invisible.”

Dominic watched her carefully.

“You were collecting information.”

“Yes.”

“For who?”

Emma did not answer immediately.

That hesitation caught his attention.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was choosing her words.

Finally, she said:

“For myself.”

The answer surprised him.

Isabella immediately leaned forward.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Emma looked at her.

“You don't have to believe anything.”

She pointed toward the document.

“The evidence already exists.”

Isabella’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea who you are dealing with.”

Emma looked almost amused.

“No.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“I know exactly who I am dealing with.”

That sentence created a silence unlike before.

Because Isabella realized something.

Emma was not trying to threaten them.

She was not trying to impress them.

She was simply stating a fact.

Dominic noticed his wife’s reaction.

He knew Isabella better than anyone.

She enjoyed humiliating people because she believed she was untouchable.

But now she was not angry.

She was nervous.

That meant Emma had touched something real.

Dominic turned toward his wife.

“Isabella.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“Do you know her?”

The question changed everything.

Isabella’s confidence returned instantly.

“No.”

Too fast.

Dominic noticed.

A person telling the truth usually paused to remember.

A person lying usually answered before thinking.

Emma noticed too.

“She knows exactly who I am.”

Isabella’s eyes moved toward her.

“Stop.”

The word came out sharper than expected.

Everyone heard it.

Including Dominic.

He slowly looked between them.

“What happened?”

Silence.

Isabella looked away.

For the first time that evening, she looked like someone trapped.

Emma looked at Dominic.

“Six years ago, before your wife became Isabella Salvatore, she had another name.”

Isabella’s face changed.

A tiny movement.

A flicker.

But enough.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Continue.”

Emma reached into the envelope again.

This time, she removed an old photograph.

She placed it on the table.

Dominic looked down.

The woman in the picture was younger.

Different hair.

Different style.

But unmistakably Isabella.

Standing beside another man.

A man Dominic did not recognize.

At least not immediately.

Then he noticed the date.

And something inside him changed.

Because the date was from before he met Isabella.

“Who is he?” Dominic asked.

Emma looked at Isabella.

“You should tell him.”

Isabella’s lips tightened.

“Enough.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Dominic lifted the photograph.

“Who is he?”

Nobody had ever heard that tone from him.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

Worse.

Disappointed.

Isabella looked at her husband.

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to explain.

But then her pride returned.

“You’re really going to believe a waitress over your wife?”

Dominic did not answer.

Because that was exactly the problem.

A few hours ago, he would have chosen Isabella without hesitation.

Tonight, he was no longer sure.

Emma stood slowly.

“I didn't come here to destroy your marriage.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Then why?”

Emma looked toward Isabella.

“Because she destroyed someone else's life.”

The words hung in the air.

Isabella’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Emma’s calm expression finally changed.

Not into anger.

Into sadness.

“You don't remember me, do you?”

The question made Dominic look at her again.

Something about the way she said it was different.

Not a threat.

Not an accusation.

A wound.

Emma continued.

“You probably remember the night.”

Isabella said nothing.

“The woman who begged you for help.”

Still nothing.

“The woman who trusted you.”

Isabella’s face became pale.

Dominic watched carefully.

Emma stepped closer to the table.

“You told her you would fix everything.”

Her voice became quieter.

“But you never did.”

The restaurant remained silent.

Rain tapped against the glass windows.

Outside, Manhattan continued moving.

Cars passed.

People walked.

The city remained unaware that inside one private room, an empire was beginning to crack.

Dominic looked at Emma.

“Who was that woman?”

Emma looked directly into his eyes.

“My mother.”

No one moved.

No one breathed.

And for the first time that night, Dominic Salvatore realized the waitress standing in front of him had never been looking for money.

She had never been looking for power.

She had been waiting.

Waiting for the moment when Isabella Salvatore could no longer hide.

Dominic slowly placed the photograph back on the table.

His voice was quiet.

“Tell me everything.”

Emma looked at Isabella.

Then back at Dominic.

“I will.”

A pause.

“But once I start…”

May you like

Her eyes hardened.

“You will never see your wife the same way again.”
