Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The first thing Dominic Salvatore noticed was that Emma was not afraid of silence.

Most people hated silence.

Especially in rooms like this.

Silence meant judgment.

It meant danger.

It meant someone powerful was deciding what happened next.

But Emma stood beneath the golden lights of the private dining room as if she had been waiting for this exact moment for years.

And maybe she had.

Dominic looked around the room.

The guests who had arrived expecting an expensive dinner were now witnessing something far more valuable.

A truth.

And truths were always more expensive than money.

“Everyone leaves.”

His voice was quiet.

But nobody questioned him.

The businessmen immediately stood.

The socialites grabbed their purses.

The musicians lowered their instruments and disappeared.

Even the restaurant staff moved quickly, pretending they had not heard anything.

Within seconds, the private dining room belonged only to Dominic, Isabella, Emma, and the few security men stationed near the doors.

The rain outside grew heavier.

The city lights reflected against the glass windows, turning Manhattan into a blur of gold and shadows.

Dominic remained seated.

Isabella stood beside him.

Emma stood across from them.

Three people.

Three different versions of the same night.

“You have five minutes,” Isabella said coldly.

Dominic looked at her.

“No.”

The single word stopped her.

She turned.

“What?”

“You don’t decide how this conversation goes.”

For the first time in years, Isabella Salvatore looked like she had forgotten how to breathe.

Because Dominic was not defending her.

He was not protecting her.

He was questioning her.

And that frightened her more than anything Emma could say.

Dominic looked at Emma.

“Start from the beginning.”

Emma nodded slowly.

“Six years ago, my mother worked for one of Isabella’s charity foundations.”

Isabella immediately interrupted.

“That is a lie.”

Dominic raised a hand.

She stopped.

Emma continued.

“She was responsible for reviewing financial records.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Financial records?”

“Yes.”

She glanced at the document on the table.

“She discovered money was disappearing.”

A pause.

“Large amounts.”

The room became colder.

Dominic picked up the document again.

The numbers suddenly looked different.

Not just transactions.

Not just transfers.

Evidence.

“From where?”

Emma looked at Isabella.

“From accounts created under fake charity organizations.”

Isabella laughed.

But the sound was forced.

“You expect him to believe this?”

Emma did not react.

“You always underestimated people who worked for you.”

The sentence hit harder than anger.

Because it was true.

Isabella had always believed that servants were invisible.

People who brought food.

People who opened doors.

People who disappeared when their usefulness ended.

She never imagined one of them could become the person standing across from her with the power to destroy everything.

“My mother found the evidence,” Emma continued.

“She planned to report it.”

Dominic looked at Isabella.

“And?”

Emma’s eyes became darker.

“She never got the chance.”

Silence.

A long one.

Dominic did not move.

But his fingers tightened slightly against the table.

“What happened?”

Emma looked down for a moment.

When she spoke again, her voice was quieter.

“She was accused of stealing.”

Isabella looked away.

“She was arrested.”

A pause.

“She lost everything.”

The room stayed silent.

“My mother spent years trying to prove she was innocent.”

Emma looked directly at Dominic.

“But nobody listened.”

Dominic studied her face.

There was no revenge in her expression.

That surprised him.

People who came seeking revenge usually wanted their enemy to suffer.

They wanted pain.

They wanted humiliation.

Emma wanted something else.

Recognition.

“I’m sorry,” Dominic said.

The words surprised everyone.

Especially Isabella.

Because Dominic Salvatore was not known for apologizing.

Not publicly.

Not privately.

Not easily.

Emma looked at him.

“I don't need your apology.”

“What do you need?”

“The truth.”

The answer came instantly.

Dominic leaned back.

“Why now?”

Emma looked toward Isabella.

“Because I finally found proof.”

Isabella’s expression changed.

“What proof?”

Emma reached into her bag.

This time, Isabella moved.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Fear flashed across her face.

Dominic noticed.

“What is it?”

Emma placed a small black phone on the table.

Not expensive.

Not impressive.

Just ordinary.

But Isabella stared at it like it was a weapon.

“This phone belonged to someone who worked with you.”

Dominic looked at Isabella.

“Who?”

Emma pressed the power button.

The screen lit up.

Several encrypted files appeared.

“I spent six months finding everything.”

She looked at Dominic.

“Every payment.”

“Every conversation.”

“Every person involved.”

Isabella’s confidence disappeared.

“You had no right.”

Emma turned toward her.

“No right?”

A small, bitter smile appeared.

“You destroyed my mother’s life because she knew too much.”

She stepped closer.

“And now you’re angry because someone finally learned yours.”

The words landed.

Dominic looked at Isabella.

“Is this true?”

Isabella stared at him.

“Dominic, listen to me.”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“Answer the question.”

She hesitated.

That hesitation told him more than any confession.

Dominic stood.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

His security men straightened.

But Dominic raised his hand.

Nobody moved.

He walked slowly toward the window.

For years, he had believed he understood his own empire.

He knew his enemies.

He knew his rivals.

He knew the people who wanted to take everything from him.

But he had never considered the possibility that the greatest threat had been sitting beside him at every dinner.

Wearing his name.

Using his power.

While hiding secrets.

“Why did you never tell me about her mother?”

Isabella followed him.

“Because it was complicated.”

Dominic turned.

“No.”

His expression was cold.

“Complicated is forgetting an anniversary.”

A pause.

“Complicated is a business disagreement.”

His eyes hardened.

“This is something else.”

Isabella’s face changed.

The fear was gone.

Now there was anger.

“You think she’s innocent?”

Dominic said nothing.

“She came here wearing a uniform and pretending to be helpless.”

Isabella pointed at Emma.

“She manipulated everyone in this room.”

Emma remained silent.

Because that accusation was exactly what Isabella wanted.

A distraction.

A way to shift the attention.

But Dominic noticed something.

Emma never defended herself.

People who were lying usually fought desperately to control the story.

Emma simply waited.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

“Do you have proof?”

“Yes.”

“Enough proof?”

“Yes.”

Dominic nodded.

“Then tomorrow morning, my lawyers will review everything.”

Isabella froze.

“Your lawyers?”

“Yes.”

“You’re investigating me?”

The question sounded almost unbelievable.

Dominic looked at his wife.

“If there is nothing to find, you have nothing to fear.”

Those words destroyed whatever confidence she had left.

Because innocent people wanted investigations.

Guilty people feared them.

Emma picked up the phone.

“I knew you would say that.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

She hesitated.

Then she placed another item on the table.

A small memory card.

The same kind used for hidden recordings.

Dominic stared at it.

“What is that?”

Emma looked toward Isabella.

“Insurance.”

Isabella stepped backward.

“No.”

The word came out almost like a whisper.

For the first time that night, Dominic saw genuine fear.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

Emma spoke softly.

“Everything you said.”

“Everything you did.”

“Every order you gave.”

A pause.

“It’s all there.”

Dominic picked up the memory card.

The rain continued falling outside.

The city continued shining.

But inside the room, Isabella Salvatore finally understood something.

The waitress she had called invisible had spent six months watching.

Learning.

Waiting.

Preparing.

And now the woman she had insulted in front of everyone held the one thing Isabella had spent her entire life protecting.

The truth.

Dominic looked at Emma.

“Why show me this?”

Emma met his eyes.

“Because you’re the only person powerful enough to make sure she can’t bury it again.”

A long silence followed.

Then Dominic asked the question that changed everything.

“What happens if I believe you?”

Emma looked toward Isabella.

May you like

Her answer was quiet.

“But you already do.”
