Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden in the Shadows

Dominic Salvatore had spent his entire life learning one rule.

Trust was a luxury.

A dangerous one.

The people closest to you were often the ones who knew exactly where to place the knife.

For years, Dominic believed he understood the world around him.

He knew his enemies.

He knew his allies.

He knew which men would betray him for money and which ones would stand beside him when everything collapsed.

But now, sitting alone inside his office at three in the morning, Dominic realized something that disturbed him more than any enemy ever had.

He had never truly known the people closest to him.

The evidence sat across his desk.

The memory card.

The financial records.

The photograph of Isabella with Daniel Moretti.

And now another question.

Who inside his own organization had helped hide everything?

Dominic stared at the documents Vincent had delivered.

One name appeared repeatedly.

But every time he saw it, he refused to believe it.

Because believing it meant accepting that someone who had stood beside him for years had been lying from the beginning.

The office door opened.

Vincent walked inside.

“You found something.”

It was not a question.

Vincent placed a tablet on the desk.

“We traced the financial movements.”

Dominic looked at the screen.

“Tell me.”

“The money from the fake charities was not moved directly.”

Vincent tapped the screen.

“There were several layers.”

“Shell companies.”

“Fake investors.”

“Foreign accounts.”

Dominic nodded.

“Who created the structure?”

Vincent hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Dominic looked up.

“Say it.”

Vincent took a breath.

“Anthony Bellini.”

The name filled the room.

Dominic did not react immediately.

Anthony Bellini.

His oldest business partner.

The man who had been beside him before the empire existed.

Before the restaurants.

Before the security companies.

Before the money.

Anthony had been there when Dominic had nothing.

They had built everything together.

Or at least Dominic thought they had.

“No,” Dominic said quietly.

Vincent looked at him.

“I checked three times.”

Dominic stood and walked toward the window.

“No.”

This time his voice was harder.

“Anthony would never do that.”

Vincent remained silent.

Because he knew something Dominic did not want to admit.

The strongest betrayals were always impossible at first.

Dominic looked at the city below.

Anthony had been the person he trusted with his life.

He had trusted him with money.

With decisions.

With secrets.

If Anthony was involved…

then every major moment of the last six years needed to be questioned.

“Find him.”

Vincent nodded.

“And Isabella?”

Dominic remained facing the window.

“Do not tell her we know.”

Vincent understood immediately.

“You want to watch what she does.”

“Yes.”

Because Dominic had survived this long by understanding one thing.

People revealed themselves when they believed they were safe.

Across Manhattan, Isabella Salvatore sat in the back seat of a black luxury vehicle.

She stared through the window.

The city lights passed across her face.

For the first time in years, she did not feel powerful.

She felt exposed.

Her phone vibrated.

She looked down.

One message.

Unknown number.

The words were simple.

He knows.

Isabella froze.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

She immediately deleted the message.

Then she looked toward the driver.

“Change direction.”

The driver glanced at the mirror.

“Where to?”

“Bellini Tower.”

The driver nodded.

But Isabella did not notice the small camera attached beneath the rear mirror.

She did not notice the driver’s phone quietly recording the conversation.

She did not notice that Dominic had already started watching her.

The Bellini Tower stood in the center of Manhattan like a monument to old money.

Inside the top floor office, Anthony Bellini poured himself a drink.

He was older than Dominic.

Silver hair.

Expensive suit.

A calm smile that made people trust him.

That had always been his greatest weapon.

People expected danger to look dangerous.

Anthony never did.

When Isabella entered, he did not look surprised.

“You took too long.”

She closed the door behind her.

“You said everything was under control.”

Anthony continued pouring his drink.

“It was.”

“No.”

Her voice became sharper.

“The waitress found everything.”

Anthony finally looked at her.

For a moment, his expression changed.

Not fear.

Annoyance.

That told Isabella everything.

“You knew.”

Anthony placed the glass down.

“Careful.”

“You knew she existed.”

Silence.

“She was watching us.”

Anthony walked toward the window.

“Everyone watches everyone.”

“Don’t talk like that.”

Isabella stepped closer.

“You told me she was harmless.”

“She was.”

“Then why is Dominic investigating me?”

Anthony smiled slightly.

“Because you panicked.”

The words angered her.

“I panicked?”

“Yes.”

He turned around.

“You forgot the most important rule.”

“What rule?”

“Never react emotionally when someone attacks you.”

Isabella stared at him.

“You are blaming me?”

Anthony said nothing.

And that silence was enough.

For the first time, Isabella wondered if she had made a terrible mistake.

Maybe Anthony had never been her partner.

Maybe she had only been another piece on his board.

“What do you want?”

Anthony walked back to his desk.

“From you?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Nothing.”

That answer frightened her more.

People who wanted something could be negotiated with.

People who wanted nothing were unpredictable.

Anthony picked up a folder.

“Dominic cannot find out the entire story.”

Isabella looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if he does, everyone loses.”

A pause.

“Including me.”

The honesty surprised her.

Anthony continued.

“You need to control Dominic.”

Isabella laughed bitterly.

“You think I can control him now?”

Anthony looked at her.

“You did for six years.”

The reminder hurt.

Because it was true.

She had controlled the image.

The marriage.

The story.

Until Emma appeared.

The next morning, Dominic arrived at his private headquarters earlier than usual.

He had not slept.

He had spent the entire night reviewing documents.

Every conversation.

Every decision.

Every time Anthony advised him.

Every time Isabella asked him to trust her.

The past looked different when viewed through suspicion.

Vincent entered.

“We found Emma.”

Dominic immediately looked up.

“Where?”

“A small apartment in Queens.”

“Alone?”

“No.”

Dominic waited.

“She met someone.”

“Who?”

Vincent placed a photograph on the desk.

An older woman.

Dominic recognized her.

“Clara Bennett.”

“Yes.”

Dominic frowned.

“Who is she?”

Vincent opened another file.

“She was your father’s former accountant.”

That changed everything.

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Vincent continued.

“She disappeared after your father’s company collapsed.”

Dominic looked at the file.

Another connection.

Another secret.

Another piece of a puzzle that kept getting larger.

“Why would she help Emma?”

Vincent looked at him.

“Because she knows what happened.”

Dominic picked up the file.

“What happened?”

Vincent hesitated.

“Your father’s company did not fail because of bad investments.”

A pause.

“It was sabotaged.”

Dominic froze.

For years, he believed his father’s downfall had been caused by poor decisions.

A mistake.

A failure.

Something unavoidable.

But now…

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

“Who sabotaged him?”

Vincent looked directly at him.

“We are still trying to confirm.”

Dominic opened the file.

Inside was an old photograph.

Four people standing together.

His father.

Anthony Bellini.

Isabella.

And someone else.

Someone Dominic did not recognize.

But Emma would.

Because written on the back of the photograph was a name.

The same name that appeared in the documents.

The same name connected to every secret.

Dominic read it.

And for the first time in years…

he felt something close to fear.

Because the person behind everything was not outside his empire.

Not an enemy.

Not a rival.

It was someone who had been standing beside his family for decades.

Someone who had helped build the foundation.

Someone who knew every weakness.

Every secret.

Every door.

Dominic slowly closed the file.

“Bring Emma to me.”

Vincent looked surprised.

“Are you sure?”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But this time…”

His eyes turned cold.

“I want the truth from her before anyone else changes the story.”

Because Dominic Salvatore finally understood.

The waitress had never been the threat.

May you like

She was the warning.

And the real war had only just begun.
