Chapter 5 - The Enemy Inside the House

The memory card sat inside a small evidence bag on Dominic Salvatore’s desk.
It was a tiny object.
Almost meaningless to anyone else.
But Dominic had learned a long time ago that the smallest things often carried the greatest damage.
A single signature could destroy a company.
A single conversation could end an alliance.
A single piece of evidence could bring down an empire.
And now, sitting in the quiet darkness of his private office, Dominic stared at the memory card that could destroy the woman who had stood beside him for six years.
Isabella.
His wife.
The person he had trusted more than anyone.
The person who had known his weaknesses, his fears, and the secrets he never shared with the world.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, New York continued moving.
Cars filled the streets below.
People rushed through the rain.
The city had no idea that one of its most powerful men was sitting alone, questioning everything he thought he knew.
The door opened.
Vincent Rizzo stepped inside.
The scar across his face became more visible beneath the low office lighting.
For twenty years, Vincent had been Dominic’s closest soldier.
Not because he was the strongest.
Not because he was the most dangerous.
Because he was loyal.
“Everyone has been cleared from the restaurant,” Vincent said.
Dominic nodded.
“And Emma?”
“She disappeared.”
That answer caught Dominic’s attention.
“Disappeared?”
Vincent placed a folder on the desk.
“She left through the staff entrance before our people could speak with her.”
Dominic looked at the folder.
“Did she run?”
Vincent hesitated.
“No.”
That was unusual.
Vincent rarely hesitated.
“She walked away.”
Dominic leaned back.
“Like she knew nobody would stop her.”
“Yes.”
Silence filled the room.
Dominic looked toward the evidence bag again.
Emma had planned everything.
Every movement.
Every word.
She knew exactly when to reveal information.
Exactly when to stop.
Exactly how much pressure to apply.
She had not walked into that restaurant hoping for chaos.
She had walked in with a mission.
“Find out everything about her,” Dominic said.
Vincent nodded.
“Already started.”
“And?”
A pause.
“So far, almost nothing.”
Dominic looked up.
“Almost?”
Vincent opened the folder.
“Emma Carter. Twenty-six years old. No criminal record. No suspicious financial activity. No known connections to criminal organizations.”
He turned a page.
“She worked in restaurants for years.”
Dominic frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
Vincent agreed.
“That’s what makes it strange.”
He placed another document on the desk.
“Her background is too clean.”
Dominic looked at the papers.
Too clean.
He understood exactly what that meant.
People were never that simple.
Everyone had something.
A mistake.
A secret.
A weakness.
But Emma Carter appeared like someone who had erased herself from the world.
“Keep looking,” Dominic said.
Vincent nodded.
Then he stopped at the door.
“There’s something else.”
Dominic looked at him.
“What?”
“Isabella left the restaurant before the others.”
That surprised him.
“She went home?”
Vincent’s expression changed.
“No.”
The room became colder.
“She went somewhere else.”
Dominic slowly stood.
“Where?”
Vincent looked at the report.
“An apartment in downtown Manhattan.”
A pause.
“She went there alone.”
Dominic already knew what he was going to hear next.
“Whose apartment?”
Vincent looked up.
“Daniel Moretti.”
The name stayed in the room.
A name from the past.
A name Dominic had not heard in years.
Daniel Moretti.
A businessman.
A former associate.
A man who disappeared after a financial investigation destroyed his reputation.
A man who had once been connected to Isabella before she met Dominic.
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Confirm it.”
“Already did.”
Vincent lowered his voice.
“She spent two hours there.”
Dominic looked away.
For years, he had believed betrayal would come from enemies.
From rivals.
From people who openly wanted him gone.
He never imagined it would come from someone who kissed him goodnight every evening.
Someone who sat across from him at breakfast.
Someone who wore his ring.
“Find Daniel.”
Vincent nodded.
“And Emma?”
Dominic looked toward the window.
“Find her too.”
“Do you want her brought in?”
A long pause.
“No.”
Vincent looked surprised.
Dominic continued.
“Not yet.”
Because despite everything, Dominic understood one thing.
Emma had saved herself by staying invisible.
If he treated her like an enemy, she would disappear forever.
And he needed answers.
Not revenge.
Not yet.
Across the city, Emma Carter sat inside a small apartment with the lights turned off.
The room was simple.
Nothing like Dominic’s mansion.
Nothing like Isabella’s luxury.
A small table.
A worn sofa.
A few books stacked near the window.
A life built around staying unnoticed.
Emma removed the waitress uniform.
Underneath was a simple black sweater.
The person who had entered the restaurant was gone.
The waitress disappeared.
The woman who remained was someone else.
Someone who had spent six years carrying anger quietly.
She opened an old wooden box hidden beneath the bed.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Letters.
Memories.
She picked up one photograph.
A woman smiling.
Her mother.
A woman who believed kindness mattered.
A woman who believed the truth always won.
Emma had been twenty years old when everything collapsed.
She remembered that morning clearly.
The police at the door.
The accusations.
The neighbors whispering.
The news reports.
The way people looked at her mother like she was already guilty.
And the worst part was not losing money.
Not losing their home.
Not losing their reputation.
The worst part was watching her mother lose hope.
Because someone powerful had decided that her truth did not matter.
Emma placed the photograph down.
For six years, she had planned this moment.
But now that it had happened, she felt something she never expected.
Not satisfaction.
Not happiness.
Emptiness.
Because exposing Isabella would not bring her mother back.
It would not erase the years they suffered.
A knock came at the door.
Emma froze.
Nobody knew where she lived.
Nobody except—
The door opened.
Her hand moved toward the hidden object beneath the table.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Relax.”
Emma stopped.
A woman stepped inside.
Older.
Elegant.
Tired.
“Clara.”
Emma lowered her hand.
The woman closed the door.
“You did it.”
Emma looked away.
“Yes.”
Clara studied her.
“You met Dominic Salvatore.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Emma was silent.
Clara understood.
“You weren’t expecting him to be different.”
Emma looked at her.
“I expected a monster.”
“And?”
A pause.
“He’s complicated.”
Clara sighed.
“That’s dangerous.”
Emma knew she was right.
Because monsters were easy to fight.
Good people with terrible choices were harder.
“He asked who I was,” Emma said.
Clara sat down.
“And what did you tell him?”
“The truth.”
“No.”
Clara shook her head.
“You told him part of the truth.”
Emma looked at her.
“There’s more.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Clara reached into her bag and placed another folder on the table.
Emma stared at it.
“What is that?”
“The reason your mother was really targeted.”
Emma did not touch it.
“Clara…”
“You need to know.”
Emma slowly opened the folder.
Inside was one document.
One name.
One signature.
And the moment Emma saw it, every piece of the puzzle changed.
Because the person who ordered her mother’s downfall was not Isabella alone.
It was someone much closer to Dominic Salvatore.
Someone inside his own empire.
Emma looked up.
Her face had lost all emotion.
“Are you sure?”
Clara nodded.
“I saw it myself.”
The rain hit the windows harder.
Emma looked back at the document.
For six years, she believed she was hunting one person.
But now she understood.
Isabella was only one piece.
The real enemy had been hiding behind Dominic’s power.
Waiting.
Watching.
May you like
And if Dominic discovered the truth too late…
his entire empire would collapse from the inside.
